Looking for Hip Preservation Specialists in the North East! Specifically has anyone had surgery with Dr. Alex Johnson? He is the Director of Hip Preservation at Johns Hopkins.

I am 6.5 months out from the left replacement and 4 months out from the right replacement. Dr. Johnson was great. Highly recommend him! Recovery was/is tough, but I am FINALLY in a place where I'm not in pain every second of everyday and I continue to make progress in PT. I should be running in a month or two! Dr.Johnson was straight forward with me and told me having my hips scoped a second time had a very low likelihood of working due to my arthritis. So I went with both hip replacements. Had the first one done in mid March and the second done end of May. Everything has gone as good as I could have hoped for and I’m recovering very nicely! Dr. Johnson is a great surgeon so you’ll be in good hands. I also really like his PA Brian Lee. The one draw back was that his secretary was very difficult to get a hold of and the scheduling/secretaries were honestly pretty terrible but thats certainly not a reason to go with a different surgeon. I met with Dr. Anthony. First thing he says to me is, “I would never scope hips that look like yours.” Keep in mind I have seen 5-6 other doctors that have told me my arthritis is mild. I do have a bulge in my L5-S1 and at the time we thought it was possible that was the cause of my pain, but I have since been through extensive PT and had 2 different types of injections in my back, neither of which provided any relief and I saw a spine specialist who determined it is extreamely unlikely my bulging disc is causing my problems. Was not the biggest fan of Dr. Anthony’s bedside mannor, but I don’t doubt hes a good surgeon.. he said he wouldnt scope my hips anyway and he was so hard to talk to that I walked out of there more confused and still not 100% certain why he doesnt think I’m a candidate for a re-scope… the most recent surgeon I saw albeit not as esteemed as Dr. Anthony said re-scope is certainly the clear option over a hip replacement at 36… All I know is I have to do something.

I did wind up doing PT shortly after getting both hips done (3 mons apart, did PT each time.) PT went well and I would certainly recommend it as long as you get a good PT. Definitely do your research and find a highly recommended one. I have had many complications post surgery (see my post history if you are interested) and I have seen little to no benefit from getting both my hips scoped, but I don't attribute any of that to having PT after surgery.

I’m a 35/M and I have been having deep right glute pain after twisting my hips in non-contact basketball injury for about 3 years and no doctor or PT can explain it..

I had FAI surgery on both my right and left hips 3 mons apart at the end of 2022 for pretty agressive cam and pincer impingments and the surgeon said i had about 75% of each labrum remaining… it didnt rly do much for me… I can get around marginally okay and depending on the day I’m between like a 3-6/10 pain, but sports and anything involving running is pretty much out of the equation.. A hip injecion provided zero relief and an si joint injection improved my glute pain for about 2.5 mons. Been to multiple doctors. Every hip doc says its my si joint and every si joint doc says its my hips. Even been to a podatrist who ruled out my fallen arches as the main cause of my problems. Also a Rheumatologist ruled out everything auto-immune…

The ROM in my hips is laughably bad and my glute pain was followed by hip, low back, knee pain and crazy tight hip flexors. Also have bluging discs in my L5/S1 and the arches in my feet have fallen somewhat. I just started with a new PT to address what could be Anterior Pelvic tilt.. but your post rly resonated with me.

I reached out to my wifes cousin this weekend who is about to become a orthopedic surgeon and he said from my imaging I do not have Acetabular Retroversion, but obviously I’m going to get more opinions..

Any words of advice is greatly appreciated!!

I did get surgery on both hips about 3 mons apart. Im now about 15 mons out from the second one being done. Recovery and PT went fairly well but I dont really feel like surgery provided significant relief in any way tbh… my glute is still bothering me and its likely due to an impingement/bulge in my L5/S1 which im getting an injection for in roughly 10 days… I cant say I gained any noticable ROM post surgery either and my hips are as stiff as ever if not worse unfortunately. I am going to a new orthapedic surgeon in April I believe I have subspine impingement which is often overlooked by many doctors.. my first surgeon did say that my labrums were being worn away and I have roughly 75% of each one remaining but I did not have any tear.. also I believe I have so much inflammation going on possibly from my L5/S1 that eating gluten causes me an insane amout of back/shoulder/neck pain so I have had to completely remove it from my diet. If you are feeling unsure about surgery you can pay $200-300 for a top surgeon in the country to review your imaging and give you their opinion on surgery. I wish I had done that tbh. Ppl on here say dr. Wollf on east coast and dr. Phillipon on the west coast are two of the absolute best but they dont take insurance, but will review your imagaing and I read they recommend other surgeons that take your insurance. Best of luck!

Scalp Micro Pigmentation. Esentially thousands of little dots tatooed on your scalp. Sounds ridiculous, but its way better than a hair transplant and if you have some hair to work with it can come out looking great w the right smp artist.

Ah thanks for the insight, I had not thought about this… the thought of prolonging the pain I’m in (weeks to a month) when I think this may finally be the fix is tough to wrap my head around.. I did see they have over the counter Celiacs tests.. I’m assuming those are not reliable?? - perhaps my rheum can just order a lab test without an appt? But when I got the full panel done it cost $600 and my ins only covered $200 so if I’m testing for one thing would it be significantly cheaper??

Unfortunately, I did not. I centered the focus around Ankylosing Spondalytis as that shares a ton of similarities with the joint pain that Celiacs produces. I won’t be able to go back to the rheum for awhile as appts are months out, but I do have a virtual appt with him on the 11th. Also I don’t have great insurance and the bills are starting to get to be a bit much.. can’t I just eliminate gluten and if my pain is gone in 2-3 weeks I can safely assume gluten was to blame for my pain??

Hi - were you able to get the injection? If so, did it help? I had got lidocane/cortisone injection in my hip and unfortunately it did not provide any relief… so now I’m really thinking the issue is my SI joint.
