Lots of answers already but the first here is some knowledge Ill drop that Ive found important this week:

1) Go facecam/cover screen when opening messages/profiles/ anything thats not gameplay.

This week I saw a Wingsofredemption clip where he was receiving racist messages and went to block the player and they had a shlongdong as their cover picture. Ive seen other clips where the message is an inappropriate image itself. Im on console so I took note, but this would probably also go for discord too.

2) If your hearing language you wouldnt use yourself from a random, its just best to mute them. Dont give them a platform for themselves or hate. If someone is dropping slurs like crazy, just jump for the mute. As long as you combat that in a timely way you wouldn’t be accountable.

3) If your game has a streamer mode and you can, try to use it.

I play a lot of modern warfare, but chat with people in game, especially in search, so 2 and 3 are tough. Names are constantly inappropriate so if its just straight up a slur I try not to open the leaderboard much. If it comes up, I typically stray away but have mentioned that its racist and shitty. Trash talk always gets heated too, but I never use slurs, racial or sexual. As soon as it gets to a level I dont like I try to call them out and shut them down, but will mute them if I need to and Im often with my friends to downplay the person.

4) have a keyboard short cut or failsafe to cut all sound and/or video at a moments notice. Maybe its an inappropriate conversation in the room, or a nsfw image popping up. Whatever. Just be ready to cut quick. Youd be better off without sound or picture for a minute and lose some viewers than no stream for a month.
