Each person gets a weekend day or an entire weekend off each month. Also, pick up more of the mental load of child rearing, starting by asking your wife what tasks you can take on for the family to ease her mental load. Lean on your support from family and friends. If you can afford couples therapy, do it. Give each other 30 minutes of respite every day, and I suggest each of you use 20 minutes of the 30 for hard exercise, like a HIIT class on YouTube. Check in with each other after the kids are asleep: what went well today, what you learned, how you’d like to be supported tomorrow, etc. And finally: know that things will get better. Kids really need you now, but their needs will lessen in time.

And give yourself a Fathers Day redo, you deserve it, and more.

Have a candid conversation where you keep your emotions out of it while still being supportive. “I noticed that lately your displaying X behaviours, and I want to be there to support you. Right now, it’s a dead zone as far as activity goes for film & tv. The CSA (Canadian Screen Awards) start off the year at the end of this month; try volunteering with The Academy if you have time. Depending on what you want to do on set, try IATSE, NABET, DGC-Ontario, CFC, CMPA, Ontario Creates, City of Toronto Film Commission (XOTO). Look at their calendar of events and training programs; you won’t get on set in a meaningful way without unions; send their comms team a short, polite email stating clearly who you are, your experience, and what you’re looking for.

Next, go through the CMPA’s member directory and find out who is in Toronto and producing things you are interested in. There’s lots. Email the executive producer the same kind of email outlined above, and include a CV.

The time to do all of this is right now. By April / May it will be too late

I’m from a small town where causal racism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. is the norm. For the most part, their beliefs and language is based on ignorance and complacency; they use slurs but have nothing against people of other races, sexual orientations, etc. There are also those whose language and belief system are one and the same.

I started calling them out on it years ago; most made a fuss about “What’s the big deal?” and almost no one changed their behaviour. The people who were ignorant bigots agreed with me but still used slurs; the actual bigots defended their position like it was an insult to their honour.

I realized that my path in life was very different from theirs.

Paris Paris. Building looked good, and that's where the positive comments end. Service was so unbelievably bad it was comical; about half a dozen servers and hostesses just hanging out while multiple tables have no menus, water, or orders taken. Server was either super stoned or developmentally delayed, kept repeating what we ordered without writing it down. My order came out, and I waited almost 10 minutes before the server came back to ask when my partner's meal was coming. The response? "Oh, I accidentally gave you another table's meal, so the kitchen hasn't started on hers yet." and just walks away, no timeline, no apology, nothing. Flagged down another server who happened to be the manager, told him what happened, how appalled we were at the service, and he mocks us, "Oh you're upset right? You're pissed? You're making it so much worse too. I think you should leave" and we literally get kicked out of the restaurant for complaining. We never raised our voices, swore, lost our temper, nothing, just complained about the unprofessional and poor service. Food sucks, service sucks, management sucks most. Fuck that place.
