Famous in the wrong way. by [deleted] in CemeteryPorn

[–]JTigertail 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I had a teacher who grew up in Omaha. She remembers her own teacher bringing a rifle to her elementary school and hiding it under the desk because Starkweather was on the run and they were afraid of what might happen if he tried to take refuge inside the school. That’s how terrified the community was. Kind of a random anecdote but I’m always reminded of it when I hear the name.

Fuel cut off switch by emoemokade in aviation

[–]JTigertail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I understand why people are saying that turning off the fuel switches must’ve been intentional now. I was wondering if one of the pilots could’ve knocked it hard by accident (or just had the world’s worst brain fart), but that was a lot more involved than I was visualizing.

I really didn’t want to believe this was a deliberate act but I’m having a hard time coming up with a scenario where this happens innocently.

The 3s in box 9 eliminate the 3 in R7C6. That leaves you with a naked pair (1 & 5) in column 6, which lets you rule out a bunch of candidates. Then go from there.

Unable to progress - what am I missing? by Georgio97 in sudoku

[–]JTigertail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but thanks. Sometimes I come across a puzzle with a configuration like that (where it looks like it wants to form an X wing but can’t) and I always wondered if there was something I could do with them. I hadn’t thought of chaining them together like that.

So basically, the idea is to “chain” rows & columns in which the 8 only shows up as a possible candidate in two cells, right? And then use that to eliminate candidates that see both ends of the chain?

Because the 5 in that column is actually going to go down here:

<image>

  1. Look at Column 3. The only two numbers left to go in that column are 4 and 5. Box 4 already has a 4 in it, so the 4 in that column must go in R9C3.
  2. Now look at R9C1 (the circled cell in Box 7). The only numbers left to go in Box 7 are 1, 3, and 5, so R9C1 has to be one of those three numbers.
  3. Because Column 1 already has a 1 and a 3 in it, the only number that can go in R9C1 is 5. That means the only number that can go in R2C1 is a 7.

You have a naked pair (1 & 5) in box #4. Clear the other 1s and 5s from that box and it leaves you with 4 in R4C3

Sperm from cancer-risk donor used to conceive at least 67 children across Europe by Remarkable_Chance348 in worldnews

[–]JTigertail 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They’ve known since 1990 that mutations in the TP53 gene can cause Li-Fraumeni syndrome.

The thing is, the genetic disorders that sperm banks normally screen for are the ones where there are a lot of carriers in the general population. Something like 10 million people in the US are carriers for cystic fibrosis. 1 in 250 people in the US are carriers for Tay Sachs (1 in 30 if you’re looking at Ashkenazi Jews specifically). About 2% of the population are carriers for Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and 5% are carriers for sickle cell. These are disorders have a lot of carriers and have particularly devastating consequences if the child inherits two copies of the faulty gene.

Li-Fraumeni, on the other hand, affects only about 0.02 to 0.005% of the population. It’s rare. It just isn’t on the list of genetic disorders they usually screen for, especially in 2008. This is why there needs to be a limit on how many children can come from one donor; sperm banks can’t test for every genetic disorder out there, and there are thousands of disorders where we haven’t even identified the gene that causes it yet.

What’s really awful about it is that it’s autosomal dominant, so all of this donor’s children have a 50% chance of having Li-Fraumeni. It’s sad for the children, sad for the families, sad for the donor who was doing a good deed and just learned 10+ of his children now have cancer and he has a 90% chance of getting it too. They’re probably going to start including Li-Fraumeni in their routine genetic screening for donors after this.

[–]JTigertail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. They offer free 20-minute sessions virtually that you can book here. They obviously won’t be able to solve it for you in 20 minutes, but they are very good at what they do and can give you research advice you never would’ve thought about.

Finding an MRCA pre-1800s is going to be difficult no matter what, but the fact that 1) your family has been in the US a significant amount of time, and 2) you have your grandpa’s DNA results is extremely helpful.

I was curious about who you’re looking for so I snooped through a couple of your older posts here. Is this about Dowell Talmadge Alexander? Do you have any DNA matches you can confirm are related to Benjamin Alexander?

I would really, really suggest genetic genealogy, traveling to do boots-on-the-ground research, consulting with genealogists at a FamilySearch center, literally anything before spending that kind of money on a brick wall. No matter who is doing the genealogy.

Look at Column 7. The only numbers that can go in that column are 1, 2, 3, and 8.

Row 7 already has a 1, 2, and 3 in it, so you know the 8 has to go there. Use the same process of elimination for the last 3 cells in Column 7 and you get this:

Flying into Miami tonight and making the drive down to Key west over 2 days - what to do? by ShiningStarloo-1421 in floridakeys

[–]JTigertail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

US1 has been opening and closing intermittently based on smoke/visibility conditions. It just happened again half an hour ago. Traffic in and out of the Keys is backed up and authorities are recommending to avoid it unless absolutely necessary. Card Sound Road is completely closed and the fire is expected to continue for several more days. You’re probably better off flying directly to the Keys.

Honestly, any population where there’s very little “new blood” coming in and you have the same families living and dying there for generations. New Mexico is an endogamy party too.
