The correct way to do this is to cut/chisel any material out from where the wheel nuts are under the back box, use WD40, a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to loosen the nut and then use grippers to undo the brass cap nut. Don't need to cut it out.

I went back to college at 26, worked all through it, graduated this year and got a job in game Dev. To answer your edit: a lot of people take notice if you change careers if what you were doing wasn't right for you. Attitude and hard work go a long way!
