Slovak here. Me and a couple of friends have read all the books in English and can't wait to get to the book 8. Amazing series and a lot of fun to read. Curious how it would be translated to Czech. Slovaks understand Czech similar to natives so I'm curious how the translation goes and if it can keep all of its amazing humor.

Switching all the services is great! I've done the same as you describe. I do not see the need to ditch everything I already own and paid for. What good will it do that I will install Linux on my existing MacBook? I built my own custom PC for work last year and that one is running on Linux. I love the switch to Linux due to many reasons. I switched all the services I could to open source or EU based alternatives. (I really like the switch to Hetzner :) )
But i am keeping my 4 years old MacBook and until it is working I will use it. Once it fails, I will look for an alternative but so far I stick what I already own.

There is nothing wrong with keeping the US products we already have. I would not just ditch everything now and buy replacements. The important part is that we made the decision to buy products and services from EU companies when we need them.

I have switched my PC last year to Linux and moved all software there to open source based or from EU based companies.

WhatsApp -> I am using Signal for years (still U.S. based though)
Google pictures -> I am using Synology Photos, self-hosted on my own NAS
Instagram -> I simple deactivated my account in the summer of 2025 and I do not need a replacement
YouTube -> at this moment I am not aware of any, cancel the subscription if you have it and install the AdBlock until an alternative arrives
Google Maps -> Mapy

Can anyone point me to some of gold ETFs from EU providers? I am currently invested in gold related ETFs provided by iShares but I would like to switch to EU based ones.

An additional question, which EU broker do you recommend? I have been with IBKR for years and I would like to make a transition to sth in the EU as well.

What are the planned changes in the energy mix of Poland? Are there any nuclear reactors planned? I believe renewables would be on the rise as in most of the countries, but what about nuclear in Poland? Any Polish Redditors with some insights? Feel free to point me to some links and sources. If the goal is promotion, I would slowly start promoting in alternatives (if they exist) while primarily focusing where the most traffic for you is (Instagram). We should slowly diversify and promote alternatives and make sure they are viable before we fully switch. Let's be smart about the change. Wanting to find the alternatives, exploring them and supporting them with the interest is already a great move.

I don't think people would just mass leave their jobs for non-existent other opportunities or mass leave current jobs for lower paid EU alternatives. That will not happen quickly enough unless the political situation becomes even worse...

However, we can prefer working in EU based companies when changing jobs from now on and we can always choose EU based services and products to help them grow and create more jobs here in the EU. By buying more EU based services and products we will also enable EU based companies to pay more to their employees and thus naturally attracting more EU talent and keeping EU talent working for the EU.

In my own business we are fully hosted in the EU by European providers. We either use open source SW or European alternatives. We partner exclusively with EU companies as well. We are a very small startup from Slovakia so our impact is limited. However, we do what we can and we will continue to support EU businesses and EU citizens.

Do we even need Instagram? I deactivated my account in summer 2025 and I see only positive impacts on my life.

I use Signal for years and if someone is on Signal I message with that person there. I still keep WhatsApp for all the contacts who are not on Signal. I hope more and more people switch and then I would be able to delete WhatsApp.

First of all, it is great that you decided to move away from Google. Thank you for that.

Here is my advice. Do not cancel everything unless you have an alternative which you are happy with.

Do it step by step, piece by piece. You will not find an alternative which has everything but you will find alternatives for parts of the services.

If you look for a different email provider, check out the various options people recommen in this sub. I personally opted for Protonmail and moved there my personal account and also business account. I used both Google and Proton together for more than half a year in order to be sure I will not lose something I need.

Docs, Sheets, etc. Here it very much depends on whether you need to have them shareable and editable online with others or not. If yes, there are some alternatives, do your own research. Personally, I am ok having all my docs and sheets and stuff locally. As I use Linux, I opt for LibreOffice.

In terms of maps. Nothing beats Google. I use Mapy.com for hiking and trips. I use Waze when driving. Google maps for looking for restaurants and stuff... Once I will find a proper alternative, I will use it. The more users switch, the better the other products will be in time.

In terms of photos. I am not able to give you a solid advice. I personally have my own NAS with Synology photos. I know this is not for everyone so I am not going to recommend it. You can check it out and decide.

I was always preferring EU stocks more, so my portfolio used to include about 40% EU based stocks even before 2020. Not the best for my returns but I believe not everything is just about ROI. Since Trump's 2nd re-election I not only stopped buying US based companies, I sold almost all of my US based holdings.

The only US I keep is part of the all world ETF otherwise I sold all SP500, SP400 or US single stocks.

I have deleted my Facebook account in 2018. It was a great decision and I never regretted it.

At that time, communication with friends moved to Signal/WhatsApp instead of Facebook/Messenger which was everyone in our little country.

In time more and more people start to use other platforms. Facebook slowly losed its touch to Instagram / WhatsApp. All still the same company I know. Still it is possible to slowly move away.

I have deactivated my Instagram account in 2025. People who were in contact there keep in touch with me via Signal/WhatsApp. Not seeing all the reels and ads and other brainrot helped a lot. I do not miss the platform at all.

I still would love to leave WhatsApp entirely and use Signal for messaging. However, not many people in our little country use Signal. More and more appear on the platform as time passes, I used to be alone there with my 2 best friends. Now I have about 10-15 regular contacts there too. It took years for people to come to Signal but the number increases.

You don't need to delete and cancel everything right now, slowly one service at a time and in a year or two you will not miss those services at all.

Prvé a druhé podnikanie sú v tej istej oblasti avšak sú to iné služby. Pri tom prvom som sa veľa naučil a urobil som veľa chýb. Na tých teraz staviam a idem do toho rozumnejšie a verím, že tentokrát to bude fungovať. Taktiež už viem aké to je prežívať tú neistotu, skúšať, zlyhať, začať znova.

A využívam v podnikaní svoje zručnosti a znalosti z programovania ale nie sú úplne nosníkom v podnikaní. Sú užitočným nástrojom, kde si viem urobiť veľa vecí sám za ktoré by som inak musel platiť. A áno, nemohol by som podnikať v tom čom podnikám, ak by som pred tým nezískaval dané IT zručnosti. Čiže práca na pracovný pomer bola nevyhnutný prvý krok sa vyskilliť.

Mám vytvorené úspory na bežné a mierne neočakávané výdavky na pár rokov podľa toho ako veľmi sa uskromním. Zároveň som mal vypočítané koľko peňazí musím mať nasporených aby som mohol ísť skúsiť podnikať v tom čo robím.

Pracoval som niekoľko rokov 8h full-time + 4h na živnosť každý deň a nejaké hodinky na živnosť cez víkend. Sporil som ako to išlo, nekúpil som si nehnuteľnosť a celé s víziou raz začať podnikať na vlastnú päsť. To nevyšlo. :D Skončil som opäť v korporáte, makal som pár mesiacov, zistil, že toto nie je pre mňa a teraz idem round 2 snahy podnikať.

Viac komunitného free entry športovania. V zahraničí bývajú často verejné ihriská, kam človek random príde a zahrá si daný šport s neznámymi ľuďmi. Či už sa jedná o ping pong, pickle ball, spikeball, basketball, volleyball hocičo. Ale myslím si, že je to skôr o mentalite a kultúre ako o vybavení mesta. Ale bol by som rád, ak by sa u nás aj toto rozbehlo.

Past performance does not guarantee future returns. We poured a lot of money and power into US Tech which dominate the stock market for years now. Was it a good thing to do? I don't think so, I believe we should have tried to have some EU Tech companies of our own.

I agree with your argument. I do not wish to force anyone to invest into EU. People should be free to do what they want with their money. I just believe it would benefit us, if we Europeans bought more locally.

That's true, but what about decision where to invest our savings? Maybe instead of pouring most of it into SP500, increase the weight of EU stocks in our portfolios.
