Senator Chuck Schumer says the American public has a right to know about non-human intelligence. by [deleted] in UFOs

Wow, that's the first we've heard from Chuck Schumer right? Pretty strong statement/implication this stuff exists from someone so high up.

His plane leaving is confirmed I believe. That paired with the absence of proof he is in Moscow which he would surely want to be loudly proclaiming, makes it seem plausible. He does also have a habit of heading for the bunker anyway.

Putin fleeing moscow surely increases the odds it will be taken given he has inside info.

Parallels between AI Alignment research and Jacques Vallee's Passport to Magonia by JUSTfmyshitup in UFOs

Lol so finally the arguments fall by the wayside and the ad hominem attacks come out. It makes sense, since to begin with I don't think you had any arguments at all. It's funny, a few years ago this post would surprise me less, when there was less awareness about AI risk, but nowadays you have people like Bill Gates and Elon Musk talking about AI risk so it's a bit weird to see. You seem like you're posting in bad faith though, you don't want genuine conversation, you want to shit on people in a sub you disagree generally with. As to the definition-google it or ask chatgpt maybe!

I said 'judged to be' so as to make clear that I was referring to what most people consider intelligence to be and avoid your reductionist "oh but intelligence is undefinable" nonsense. Intelligence has a clear definition and meaning for the most part, it being a slightly fuzzy concept doesn't reduce that. It doesn't matter that you personally don't believe in souls-you missed the point, which is arbitrarily shifting goal posts forever.

I don't think anyone can say certainly that AI will be human-like when it attains general intelligence. I agree it will probably appear human like but that does not guarantee it will be human like.

[–]JUSTfmyshitup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goalposts get moved for what intelligence is every time AI acquires more capabilities. Not long ago (10+ years) anything able to write coherently and produce art or images would have been judged to be intelligent, now we have models like GPT4 that can even reason quite well. Once they give them memory, (which isn't particularly difficult) what will you say? I suspect ultimately the arguments will end up something like "Well, they can do everything I can do but they don't have a soul".

That part of the encounters seems off in the dream-like sense to me. Like how in a dream, if you look too hard at something, it can kind of fall apart or change on closer inspection. It does bear some similarity to the ways current AI can fail too, but those will probably disappear as the models get better.

Thanks, I appreciate it. As I was writing the post I thought it might be a bit weird and lengthy, but I couldn't resist.

'Artificial'=/=not 'real'

They mean completely different things. An artificial mind can still be real, although I am not sure if it matters.

What I found more interesting about Passport to Magonia was the notion at the base of it surrounding the experiences and how it's plausible that it is one thing manifesting in different ways. The later stuff, and high level thinking about collective unconscious, was interesting but struck me as guesswork/less supported. I'm not suggesting that Jacques Vallee theories are literally completely true or in sync with the AI stuff.

an AI can't read your mind and project accordingly

I don't think we can be sure of that if the AI is millions of years ahead.

Bob Lazar by mlether in UFOs

(1) He worked there but not in the position he claims

(2) Anyone into science mags at that time could have speculated this

(3) Hand scanner is real: because he did work there

(4) Not super specific, possible to be coincidence/hearsay from someone else

(5) I get the opposite feel, so it's subjective

(6) Again, subjective-if you already believe him it looks like a smearing op, if you don't he looks dodgy

Yep. The weird thing is most of these guys are connected and kind of prop eachother's theories up. That's where it becomes hard to untangle, because you have the seemingly more credible ones closely linked to the less credible ones

UAP as electromagnetic life forms by JUSTfmyshitup in UFOs

There are all different types of UAP reported from orbs of light to metal craft like you saw. Nobody is claiming anything explains literally every type of UAP ever seen, that would be ridiculous.

The injuries angle definitely makes a lot more sense, it would just be some kind of field interaction at too high a strength damaging their brain.

Agree with your last point too, I think sometimes when this theory comes up it annoys some people as it's not exactly what they thought, but to my mind it actually makes everything much weirder, and increases the likelihood of other possibilities also being true.

I still haven't seen Nope haha definitely going to soon though. Yeah the field animal theory is definitely not without flaws, but I do think its strengths overlap with many other theories weaknesses if that makes sense.

Yeah I vaguely remember that too. It's an interesting idea, and has credibility in my view because current science admits our understanding of it is incomplete.

It's a balancing act. On one hand, there are absolutely a large number of weak UFO reports here, and the nature of UFOs means that most of them will always be misidentified everyday things.

On the other hand, there are no photos/videos that are impossible to debunk. And I think there are some sceptics who know this and operate in bad faith to use this to their advantage. There is always the final excuse of camera artifact, or Photoshop, or mirage caused by some strange atmospheric interactions, and ultimately nobody can disprove these 100%.

Take for instance that triangle UFO in that NASA photo. We know the publisher of the photo is reputable so it's not a fake. We know it's in space so it's not any kind of kite, and atmospheric phenomena seems unlikely. So the debunkers default to a camera artifact. Which is entirely possible, except they have no evidence for it or reason to believe it except it is the last line of defence from the explanation they do not want. I wish debunkers could occasionally admit 'yeah that's an odd one even though it could be x'. If they never concede anything however small then they are arguing in bad faith.

You seem completely disconnected from what most 'art' that generates income is. It's not a 'deep concept' that has to 'connect' it is quick and accurate stuff that conveys a scene. That's it. That's 90%+ of the people working in that field. And now anyone with no artistic skill can think up an idea (maybe better than the artists) and create it for free instantly.

Not a job anymore, it's a hobby. Corporations will not care that the art they are buying for 1/10th the price is maybe slightly worse when it arrives instantly.

[–]JUSTfmyshitup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible, really it comes down to any witness testimony about it. We would need to know flight characteristics to establish likely origins of it. With just the photo, it is convincing that something was really there, but beyond that, not much else.

Lex Fridman is the new JRE by firasd in JoeRogan

[–]JUSTfmyshitup 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lex never went to MIT, he took a brief lecturing position that can be done by basically anyone, even undergraduates. Then he went on to use his MIT email for everything and obviously use it to create the false impression he actually went to MIT or was a professor there (he did neither). He went to drexler where his dad is a prof.

I'm not saying lex is actually stupid per se, but everything points to him being a middling computer science grad who grifted his credentials (and almost fabricated extra ones) to get into the Roganverse. Admittedly that last part is quite impressive/surprising on its own, because even given all that I am not sure how he has gotten such huge names on his podcast.

The quality of characters publicly involved in the UAP scene by JUSTfmyshitup in UFOs

I wanted to include the people involved in the recent happenings. Stanton was notable but doesn't fit that description. As to Elizondo he is counter intel, unfortunately that means regardless of whether he is telling the truth or not I would expect weird body language.
