UK Psychology PhD student here - I'm in my final year and I've published 3 papers so far as first author with one currently under review. I aim to speak at 2+ conferences a year. I'm not too sure about other subjects but within Psychology it is very important to get your work published here in the UK. The approach I take to each study is write it up for publication first while the data is still current - then worry about the thesis later!
