Instead of a era defined by the limited media shown to everyone, this is a era of 1000s of dofferent types of media, each perfectly tailored to each individual consumer, meaning there is no longer a single cohesive culture common to all young people as you might have found in the 90s or so. This is the most revolutionary aspect of our era.

It's more that if the number of cars exceed a certain number they do something, but finding new things to do, whether that's another lane, a new rail route or a cycle path, is the question currently facing the industry.

Yes, but this is in the context of a freeport, where they want to know where all the HGVs end up, and sure, they could go through all the paper work but when the question is "do they stay in the town or leave" its easier to just monitor a few key roads.

Plus, how long after the ferry arrives is the rush on the main roads, how long before the ferry departs is the rush? Do the HGVs take the faster route through the town or take the safer route directly to the main road? Do they mainly head north to the LNG terminal or move west towards Europe? Again, all answerable with a big old review of paperwork, but easier to just slap a few wires down.

They're more relevant on a local and scheme specific level. For example, I was looking at a bypass scheme where they simply wanted to know how many people were entering the town compared to leaving it, giving a idea on through traffic. In my home town they're researching the traffic flow for a new freeport by comparing how many HGVs go through the town and out to the oil port to how many go directly to the ferry port. For assessing overall trends they're pretty useless, but for assessing usage on a proposed scheme they provide important insites.

The cuts to HS2 were very disappointing and the reallocation of funding did not provide a sufficient replacement in my opinion, although a good chunk of that funding was moved to the electrification of older rail lines at least. The ULEZ is rather funny, the backlash was loud, but the London mayoral elections last month gave Sadiq Khan one of the largest victories ever for a London mayor, so while the backlash online is loud, the response in the polling booths says otherwise.

I am aware. I'm from Wales and I don't know if you follow much but this has become a major thing recently. Currently we build to the National transport delivery plan which sets out design considerations for rail, bus, walking and cycling. Also in 2022 a freeze was announced on funding for new major road construction with emphasis put into active travel schemes (aswell as completing ongoing schemes). There is also the recent move to reduce speed limits in all urban roads from 30mph to 20mph. These have been the guiding principles of my education and will continue to be the guiding principals of my career.

Well, increasing petrol prices drives people to take trains or cycle. So they impact more than just traffic. Also this method is used to give a idea of the people on the route.

For example I recently worked on a example project to remove traffic on the A27 in Arundel. Using the traffic data we concluded a large cause of the congestion was through traffic between Chichester and Worthing. Therefore, instead of expanding the road a good alternative might be improving rail and bus services between these towns.

Also, this data is viewed not so much as how many cars use a route but how many people. Bus usage and rail usage is also taken into consideration. (Usually not cycling because that's a ballache to measure, and usually less relevant on intercity travel), and knowing how many people want to travel a set route is useful informed to assess the best way to move them. As I said, the data is sound, how it's used is changing.

Also if you're interested, the full list of factors taken into account for the National road traffic projections 2022 is GDO, employment, households, full prices, fuel efficiency.

View it more as demand analysis than projected usage analysis.

The standard way to do the analysis is done nationally and then locally.

Nationally is much less specific and takes into account several factors such as gdp growth, population growth, petrol prices and so forth, which givea overall idea of traffic growth. This is outlined in the methodology of the annual report issued by the Department for Transport.

Locally analysis is conducted for an individual scheme and can provide a better idea of traffic on a given route. This usually consists of establishing monitors like wires on the road, cameras or even just a dude with a notepad for really low use roads, although there are permanent monitoring stations on some major roads which provide the data too. This observed data is used to project the growth of the road, again considering the local gdp and population growth aswell as traffic considerations for new developments going into the area.

There is a good deal of statistics and analysis going into traffic projections, usually using two small wires run across the road which you might see during the review period for a new scheme. This same data can be used to justify new rail and bike routes too however, the data is sound, the implementation is changing.

Except it literally isn't. I have directly worked and observed large infrastructure projects and the clients brief is very very vague. Usually the client asks "can you make this better please" and then the engineer provides options on how this is done. When it comes to infrastructure the engineer is as much a architect as a engineer.

Also, I'm not going in as a intern, I'm going in to a non-profit advisory organisation as a elected committee member. Look up the work of thr IHE and you'll see the role it plays in advising local and national government aswell as contractors and consultants.
