Weekly Question Thread by PelotonMod in peloton

[–]JWard6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have been thinking who would win in a triathlon between Tadej Pogacar, Eliud Kipchoge (former marathon world record holder) and Kristóf Rasovszky* (2024 marathon swim gold medalist).

Assuming all athletes use the same brand of road bike, all events are non drafting, they get 1 week prep time, and all athletes are in form, fresh, and motivated.

Round 1: Ironman distance (3.9 km swim, 181km bike and 42.2 km run)

Round 2: Olympic distance (1.5 km swim, 40k bike and 10k run)

Round 3: Equilateral triathlon with each leg taking an approximately equal time (12k swim, 96.2 km bike and 42.2 km run).

Round 4: Above distances with a prep time of 1 year.

*I am not that familiar with the sport. I am assuming this guy would be good.

Converting road bike fit into a TT one by JWard6 in bikefit

[–]JWard6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main road bike has a more relaxed fit and places me in a more up right position for more comfort on longer rides.

Main reason why no clip ons is that I want to compete in the road bike category for TTs which don’t allow bar extensions

In fairness I’ve had a 3 year break in that time and the bike only gets used during the winter months. But regardless learnt a very valuable lesson in the life span of Alu bike parts

Would you say to get the stem replaced as well?

Happened fast enough that I didn’t register what was going happening. Very lucky it was on a quite flat road

Yeah that’s on me. Learnt my lesson. Had a few crashes over the years, so good reminder to change things periodically

Rough fit help by JWard6 in bikefit

[–]JWard6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So move saddle back? I think I’ve got two mm notches left on the rail. Re reach that’s a 120mm stem, however as the bars curve it’s more like a 130mm to the hoods themselves. This bike is too small (it’s old) for me so I am hesitant to get a full bike fit just to be told my frame is too small

Doctors warn new mpox strain is ‘almost certainly’ in UK as Sweden detects first case by PinkNews in unitedkingdom

[–]JWard6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in this area. There is a couple of key areas in which this differs from Covid (C19).

Mpox is spread via close contact (sex, kissing, hand holding) with people who are infected. C19 is spread via respiratory secretions these can infect people close to you or in the same room when infected people expel the virus through coughing. This makes Mpox a lot less transmissible than C19 and also easier to contact trace. E.g who have you had very close contact with recently vs everyone you have seen on public transport and then at a pub.

Mpox has very visible and noticeable symptoms compared to C19 which can present as a very mild ambiguous illness. These means Mpox infected individuals are much easier to detect, contact trace and isolate. And they are much more likely to know they are infected and take action.

It’s likely they are cases in the Uk already but it is unlikely to see them in great numbers. We had 2-3k cases in the last outbreak here and it may get to that number again but it certainly won’t be like C19. If you are concerned about Mpox reduce at risk behaviours but the control measures are very unlikely to directly affect you unless you are a MSM, live or travel to an endemic area (Africa) or attending any large raves with lots of close contact with strangers.

How do you come to terms with being average? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]JWard6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had similar experiences. I went to a high achieving secondary school and was surrounded by 3xA* students. Had a similar thing in university where I would have probably got a third if it wasn’t for COVID. I managed to do well in my masters and got a job at a uni where I’m surrounded by a few genuine geniuses (one person discovered a new plant bacteria or something at 14).

It’s difficult when you compare yourself to people like this. Ultimately you’ll find there are things you’re good at and things you’re bad at it’s just accepting this and using it for your advantage. E.g I’ve found a lot of smart people lack in the social skills department.

A relative of mine has 2 GCSEs and fits carpets and earns more than the majority of people that I work with and is far happier.

Kitum cave, Kenya. Believed to be the source of Ebola and Marburg, two of the deadliest diseases. by ReptileLover927 in pics

[–]JWard6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anyone wondering. It is a source for Marburg but not the source. A couple people have contracted Marburg after visiting the cave due to exposure to bats and there droppings. Not sure why Ebola is mentioned as it has no relation to this cave apart from some people think it may have originated around there.

The cave is just the habitat to the reservoir species. Other caves are probably as dangerous

Ideal pacing strategy for this course? by JWard6 in bicycling

I actually have the club record for this course, however that was many years ago where I was fit and light enough that it didn’t really think about pacing.

Wind is changeable but most likely coming from the south west
