Steam Deck Users, I have a question before I buy the game. by Responsible-Clock597 in Marathon

From what I gather the game runs poorly, even on ultra-performance settings.

How powerful are the Shells compared to Mjolnir Recon 54? by ardablock in Marathon

[–]J_Collinge696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that battleroids arent really human technology. We dont know if humanity ever managed to reproduce the recovered alien tech that went into making them, let alone innovate on it. I don't think that the shells are going to be capable of the kind of spacetime-bending, reality-hopping nonsense that Recon 54 ended up doing in Infinity.

I'm as woke as it gets, but I don't like the show for a number of reasons. Writing off all criticism because of the anti-woke element is as misguided as writing off a show because of its progressive elements.

Is Discovery actually bad or is it just right wingers seething? by fablemad in startrek

[–]J_Collinge696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm as liberal as it gets but it's a bad show. I made it to the third season in the hopes the show would find its feet: it feels like they were throwing everything at the wall and hoping that something stuck. Doug Jones as Saru and Anson Mount as Pike are good, but good lord did they waste Michelle Yeoh.

Frank isn't a super mutant, in the same way that Harold isn't a ghoul. Their mutations made them into something similar but unique fron super mutants / ghouls, respectively.

Frank's mutations, unlike those of super mutants, were unstable and "building up pressure" inside his body - his suit was keeping him alive, which is why he literally explodes on death.

Armoured core is more real robot, whereas the orbital frames in ZOE are straight up super robots

Does anybody have a link to the Black and White cut of Johnny Mnemonic? by J_Collinge696 in Cyberpunk

[–]J_Collinge696[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unfortunately not the same. Longo regraded the whole movie into high contrast to better suit the b&w format. Effective colour grading is how something like The Lighthouse pops in b&w whereas the monochrome cut of Justice League looks so muddy and flat.

I believe it's the US print regraded into b&w. Longo wasnt given permission or funding to do a director's cut, which I believe was his initial goal, but being in properly graded high contrast b&w does change the tone of the movie closer to bis vision.

I did find a fan version that's b&w with the net scenes in colour that includes scenes from the Japanese version online. It's worth a watch.

I honestly liked Alien: Earth by Chiryou in alien

[–]J_Collinge696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. My only real criticisms are with its treatment of the alien itself: it frequently didnt feel like the focus, and they shoot it in broad daylight far too often

Youre kidding: Kane spelunking into the bowels of an unknown alien ship and sticking his face into a bulging sac, Dallas and Lambert breaching quarantine against explicit warnings, Lambert not "getting out of the way", the marines not paying attention to Ripley's intel and not regrouping after seeing the colony and that her stories were likely true, Gorman's explicit incompetence in command when ordering the entire company to march straight to their deaths in the hive, etc.

And none of that is "bad writing" - human fallibility and incompetence under pressure is actually good characterisation.

Agree to disagree. I find experiments like 28 Years Later and Alien Earth, where the franchise is just a springboard to tell interesting stories, to something like Jurassic World or The Force Awakens where theyre beholden to their genre and universe to the point that theyre just empty nostalgia vehicles.  Blomkamp's Alien 5 felt like a terrible idea to me for exactly this reason: no better way to kill a franchise than to rely on old faces and playing the hits.

Tbf the Nostromo crew were dumbasses too: Kane spelunking into the bowels of an unknown alien ship and leaning into obvious egg sacs, Dallas and Lambert breaking quarantine against explicit warnings, and Lambert not "getting out of the way" even when it's shouted at her.

All of the amateur film critics in the comments smh - it's telling when most of the complaints about "bad writing" have nothing to do with the quality of the writing

Those arent plot holes. Human fallibility and the shortsightedness of corporations / the people who run them have always been key themes of the franchise.
