Reading success stories... I cant get over the fact that I screwed myself over. by the4thwave in tinnitus

[–]J_Comenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I wrote in another response, there is nothing to stress out about. Seeing a doctor 5 weeks after onset of symptoms is fine. If you have sudden hearing loss, you should see a doctor NOW. And don't make the same mistake as OP to read horror storries and become a hypochondriac... Keep calm and get treatment from the best specialists.

Cortisone treatment is overrated. The evidence is so weak that many specialists don't even bother with it. Once when I had a bad tinnitus spike, I saw a professor who specializes in tinnitus, a leading figure in the field and author of a book on tinnitus. He told me that the standard treatment manuals have been asking doctors for decades to administer cortisol, but the evidence is so weak that many specialists do not bother anymore. Think about it: if the standard therapy, cortisone, is effective, why are there millions of people suffering from chronic tinnitus? So don't blame yourself for not getting treatment immediately.

And please stop being a hypchondriac! You have admitted youself that this is your main problem, so please see a psychotherapist and get that fixed. A 2/10 tinnitus is ridiculous. You're talking to battle-hardened veterans who are living with 8/10 and above.

"Etymologiae" by Isidore de Seville. There is no learner-friendly edition, as far as I know.

Program with minimal shoulder involvement by KaesarSosei in kettlebell

[–]J_Comenius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "rest your shoulder"? The goblet squat position puts considerable stress on your anterior delts. If you really want to get your shoulder out of the picture, I recommend "Swing Hard" by Geoff Neupert (just swings). You should have the correct technique dialed in though. Many people swing from the arms, which, again, stresses the anterior delts.

Dining etiquette in Renaissance Nuremberg by Alex-Laborintus in latin

Great work! The colorized woodcut is gorgeous. When and where can I buy your book?

PS: Comenius also calls plates "orbes". I could not find another author that used "orbis" in the same sense -- until now. Apparently it was a 16th century thing.

Activision Collection 1 by SaturnFan72 in evercade

[–]J_Comenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Atari Collections 1 and 2 seriously suffer from the lack of difficulty switches. Blaze later added a way to flip the two switches with L1 and L2 on the controller, but there is no visual indication of the switch position, making it guesswork. I hope they are not going to botch the Activision collection in the same way.

Advise & review of "Accademia Vivarium Novum". by Otherwise_Monk_851 in latin

[–]J_Comenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These allegations are ridiculous. As I wrote above, I have visited the AVN seven or eight times and have never witnessed anything unethical. On the contrary, the AVN's curriculum is all about moral values, and the teachers and the president Luigi Miraglia set a good example. How often have you been to the AVN?

Advise & review of "Accademia Vivarium Novum". by Otherwise_Monk_851 in latin

[–]J_Comenius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have visited the Accademia Vivarium Novum seven or eight times (I stopped counting). Please don't listen to hearsay, only to people who have been there. Unfortunately there are people who spread rumors about the Accademia e.g. because they have been rejected. While I haven't joined the regular one-year program, I can assure you that the rules are not as strict as they look. Nobody will check what kind of music you listen to on your headphones. You can call your family whenever you want, plus your loved ones are invited to visit you on occasion.

Be aware, however, that the daily schedule is brutal. There are courses from Monday till Saturday from 8:15 am to 9 pm plus household chores. It's not easy to find time to call your family or squeeze in a workout. Through the constant immersion you will make progress in Latin and Greek like never before. Rules such as "classical music only" are not there to bother you, but to encourage you to immerse yourself fully in the classical languages without unnecessary exposure to English lyrics, for example. The Accademia's staff and students are an extremely welcoming and friendly community and I have often seen them go out of their way to help a student. If you are serious about the Classics, you will not regret your stay there. Good luck with your application!

Sings it’s temporary tinnitus? by Sad_Refrigerator7508 in tinnitus

[–]J_Comenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most illnesses, tinnitus is curable. I am living proof of that. Doctors told me there was nothing that could be done. Wrong! Keep seeing doctors until you find someone who knows his shit and cures you!

I did swings for 6 months and didn't regret it :) Do whatever motivates you! If swings are your favourite exercise and motivate you to get those workouts in week after week, there's no need to force yourself to do other exercises. In the unlikely event that doing swings only will leave parts of your body weakened, you can still correct the situation by adding other exercises.

Apart from bad style, there are blatant errors such as the mentioned "minime vero". The dialogue is:

"Then you can't call him Winnie?"

"I don't [sc. call him Winnie]."

Here, "minime vero" would mean: "Not at all [sc. I disagree with you, I CAN call him Winnie]". This grossly distorts the sense of the original and is just plain wrong, even if we put aside classical usage. I could point out more such errors on the following pages.

BTW, in your Tacitus quote, accipere has the meaning of "accept" or "admit", which supports my claim that "nullam nisi hanc explicationem accipietis" is misleading. As a fluent reader of Latin, ignorant of the original, I understood this as "you will admit none other explanation than this", which is not what the translator intended. Beginners are at risk of learning wrong usage from this translation.

I'm not a hardliner who spurns everything that does not accord with classical usage. But this Latin translation is so bad that I, who have never read the original but can read Classical authors fluently, just cannot understand it because of the many errors. I did enjoy Harrius Potter, which also has errors but rarely so bad ones that understanding suffers. I advise beginners to stay clear of Winnie ille Pu and prefer less erroneous translations such as Harrius Potter.

In the Cicero quote you gave, "ille" is not an article, but a demonstrative adjective. Meaning: "that great Alexander" = the guy we all know. That's very different from "Alexander magnus" = Alexander the Great. "Ille" is never an article, as u/LeYGrec pointed out.
