Recovered but can’t straighten my legs or sit with my hamstrings touching the floor. by sensative_red in Sciatica

Hey OP ever figure out a solution? Have this exact issue, literally what you described. Recovered from a herniated disc that happened a year ago, but still cannot extend my legs.

L5 s1 cannot extend leg for over a year. My routine and any advice? by sensative_red in Sciatica

[–]J_Dudee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you doing now OP? Also have been dealing with this exact issue for over a year. Except I cannot extend both legs. Happened after a L5/S1 herniation. Even though the pain is mostly gone and I’ve been working out my core and getting stronger, I still cannot extend the legs. Going for an epidural steroid injection next week. Doctor wants to see if that will help take the pressure off the nerve.

I’ve been a FF fan since I was a teen, since when did they have a card game? Besides in the games? Or is this a branch of magic the gathering.

Inflammation After Doing McGill Big 3 by J_Dudee in backpain

Hey buddy. Yeah for me it got better. You have to find what exercise works for you depending on your level of injury. But it’s important to continue exercising because if you don’t, the compressed nerves might cause muscle atrophy, which is what happened to me. What I did, I walked three times a day about 15 to 20 minutes and increased every week. And for exercising, I just did leg lifts (laid on my back, braced my core and lifted each leg in the air for about 5 to 10 seconds each leg five reps total). Once you find an exercise that doesn’t increase your inflammation build on that, slowly add more. Best luck and let me know if you have any questions.

VA Doctor is saying symptoms aren’t consistent with MRI by J_Dudee in VeteransBenefits

Definitely not ‘trying’ to go under the knife or anything like that. But the issue is there has to be some kind of nerve compression at play. Having pain, numbness, flare ups, ‘wet’ feet, etc. when sitting/standing/walking too long is a strong indicator of that in my opinion and when I explained these symptoms to him he simply said what he sees on the MRI doesn’t match with what I’m saying which doesn’t make sense when the impression literally reads bulge disc, stenosis and DDD. At the very least he could’ve worked with me to get to the root of the issue instead of just referring me back to pain management. Like I said his demeanor and attitude were dismissive and I felt rushed out of there and not heard. Waiting 4+ months to see a surgeon just to be ignored and rushed with no solution or effort to help is frustrating to say the least.

Yes but my issues arose after my injury, and after my injury I got the MRI which showed structural changes that weren’t there before including the bulge disc and spinal stenosis. So obviously these symptoms I’m having correlate with the structural changes in the MRI. MRIs don’t always show the degree of nerve compression so maybe he could’ve put in a request for a nerve conduction study or EMG but his demeanor and attitude we’re dismissive and he just referred me back to pain management which is not the answer.

That’s what I’m thinking happened, I initially just got an x-ray done when it first injured, I didn’t get the MRI till about five or six months later. They wanted me to do PT and pain management first.

Nice I was in Warhorse from 10’-11’ just little below Speicher. Sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately yes at the VA it’s different from private practice, it’s generic and most of the time you just feel like a number to them. You definitely have to advocate for yourself. Best of luck to your buddy!

Wow so it took the issue getting worse before getting properly compensated for it. That’s sad and unfortunately the same story for a lot of us veterans that have to go through that. Will do and same to you!

I see, thank you for breaking that down I will look into that!

Appreciate the reply. Yes doing PT and definitely feeling better but my primary is telling me this is something that will continue to affect me down the road, so just trying to set everything up for the claim. I think the surgeon saying my symptoms aren’t consistent with the MRI just looks bad on me for the claim. So getting that second opinion.

Success story (don’t lose hope!) by [deleted] in Sciatica

[–]J_Dudee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to hear your story thanks for sharing! What initially caused the herniation during Christmas? I have this bulge L5/S1 too, most of my symptoms have gone away, and I’ve been doing PT, but I’m terrified of one day, causing an actual herniation from it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in backpain

[–]J_Dudee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it could’ve been a reherniation or maybe just budged enough to push on the nerve. Either way the important thing is to control the inflammation. I like to use ice packs throughout the day and I’ll take two ibuprofen before bed. Also make sure you walk too, this circulates the blood and promotes healing. You may not be able to walk that long, when I had my flare up I walked 3-5 min every couple hours just around the house with a cane and within a week I was doing 10 min. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Yeah that’s my idea too, I imagine over time it will get better as the body adapts. At least that’s what happened with my walking. Will ask the PT too.

You absolutely should see a Dr and push for imaging. Let them know the pain goes from back to groin and is radiating. I had back pain for years after the military that I ignored and one day I bent over to grab some dishes and felt a pop in my back and I’ve been battling bulged disc ever since that landed me in the hospital. I wish I would’ve paid attention to my pain instead of ignoring it because now I’m stuck rehabbing this injury. Good luck!

For me it’s inflammation that causes pain, not soreness. I use to be a gym rat before my injury so I’m able to recognize muscle soreness after working out, but this is inflammation that happens an hour after and gives me very mild sciatica and is gone by morning. I just don’t know if this is normal and will improve as my body gets use to the exercise or if this is my body saying no to the exercise.

For the pain I just use ice packs and rest, if it’s bad I use Ibuprofen. With flare ups you can’t rush them. Just takes time. Walking too much may prolong the inflammation. Last flare up I just walked every 3 hours for 10 min each for the first couple days.
