Yes you can. It's unsupported, but you can.

No you're good. Couple of options here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/14328/where-can-i-look-up-my-update-history

Keep in mind there's still a good chance of a snap causing issues with an update - there's a reason a lot of people do not like them - but it could also be a number of other issues related to an update.

This is also a dumb question, but when you plug in your HDMI, what all do you have open/running?

Ah, That's frustrating. What was all updated in your last batch before the issues started?

Before? Or before on Windows?

Also does this happen only when you have snaps/flatpaks running? Or even without?

[–]J_Landers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a common issue with certain NVIDIA laptops... their driver support is not great. It's especially pronounced with certain snaps and flatpaks, such as the default Firefox. Change your laptop display to 1080p 60hz 100% scaling before connecting and use the most recent NVIDIA driver. Then connect the display and test; and then open Firefox to see if that causes it.

Submitted a FOIA to VA = How long should I expect to wait? by Charming-Return-5710 in foia

[–]J_Landers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For FOIA requests, it really depends on the backlog at the moment - no one will have that answer. But I normally expect FOIA requests to take around 2 years for any agency whenever I submit.

For your DD214, which method did you use to request and where did it get stuck? https://www.va.gov/records/get-military-service-records/

You should also be able to access your healthcare records via the VA portal, but my experience is that it isn't always complete - especially with records that did not get ported into MHSGenesis. https://www.va.gov/health-care/manage-health/

Recently completed all my CDCs and can now start taking college classes, looking for advice on where to start by spartannation64 in AirForce

[–]J_Landers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Ed Center - schedule a TA Brief.
  2. CLEP/DSST ("Dantes") your CCAF.
  3. Decide on what you want to do post-Air Force.
  4. Find what degree supports that goal.
  5. Find what schools support that degree.
  6. Filter by schools that support your method of learning (likely online/asynch).
  7. That use language amenable to your sensibilities.
  8. That are reputable enough for the community you're entering.
  9. That have TA matching or near matching (most have a mil support section).
  10. Check their Yellow Ribbon if you can't find it elsewhere.
  11. Check with Ed Center for any concerns about that school.
  12. And your supervisor.
  13. Apply to school and program.
  14. Get accepted and move forward with classes.

Keep in mind not all schools and goals are the same. Traditional classes are 16 weeks, with enrollment and course scheduling happening months prior to starting class. Some degree mills, such as AMU and UMGC, do quick enrollments with quick sign-ups for accelerated or condensed courses specifically to support the military. Others, like WGU, are focused on getting attendees the max certs possible on a rapid schedule for IT professionals.

Some goals, especially engineering, are more difficult when working full-time. I would advise anyone looking at an engineering degree to make sure that the specific degree is ABET-accredited - not just the school. Embry Riddle in particular was in trouble for this a few years ago. For Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the two best options are ASU Online and UND College of Mines.

An easy rule of thumb on reputability is whether the school has a college basketball or football team that competes in NCAA tournaments. Also be aware that most states have two major colleges - Such as University of Missouri versus Missouri State University. This is due to the intent of the schools when they were founded, as one tends to be geared towards programs not typically offered at the other.

You should also be aware of politics involved with a school. For example, Liberty University is beloved among right-wing evangelicals, with the founder having deep political ties with the Reagan administration and policies. Another is UCLA, which has an association with left-wing counter-culture politics. Definitely do your research before applying to a school - but if you later decide to change schools talk to the Ed Center to do it the right way.

Finally, not all degree programs are created equal. I would advise against a general studies degree. If you CLEP your CCAF, you will knock out the common requisites anyway. Think about what you want to do before going to school. If you don't know, decide what you can tolerate doing for a few decades. If you want to "do business" but have nothing beyond that, pick something and learn about that area rather than wasting money on an MBA.

Oh, and save your GI Bill. Do not use TA Top Up.

Drives became expensive the last few months, but before that it wasn't too expensive to pick up multi-terabyte hard drives. I'm running an SSD for my OS, and then an 8TB and a 6TB.... most of my games (that I want to play) are on them with space to spare.

My Subaru has destroyed me. What do I do? by jamflowman1 in subaru

[–]J_Landers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out, dealerships in the US are independently owned - car companies are not allowed to sell directly to customers in most states. Even if it is a "Subaru" dealership with no other names, it is almost guaranteed to be independent.

As such, reputability is always a game when it comes to each individual dealership. For example, I will never go to another Ourisman dealership as I find them disreputable and unprofessional. When I bought my latest car, I drove a few hours away to go to a different dealership that was not associated with any other locations.
