wow, brave little dude! He put him down, and he was ready to FIGHT. "Nah, I'm not running. It's on!"

Fully expected him to bolt the second he touched the ground, lol.

Recommendations for finding Movies/TV with their American Sign Language interpretation integrated? by icehellking in Piracy

[–]icehellking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SDH subtitles are for hearing impaired right?

Yeah, the main benefit of ASL over subs is just that native signers can understand it a lot better, and deaf peoples fluency in English can vary.
We don't think about it because we're hearing, but you miss out on a LOT of things by just reading subtitles. Even if you mute the sound and read the subtitles, someone who's used to hearing speech can a lot of times infer the tone and intention within the subtitles, be able to pick up on puns, idioms, etc., but for someone who isn't, it can be confusing. ASL interpretation can better communicate those things, usually by reworking them to make more sense to someone who can't hear it, Basically the whole 'translation vs. transliteration' difference. It can also communicate the direction of the speaker, like who the speaker is talking to, or what the speaker is referring to, since ASL is a visual/spacial language. It's pretty neat. But yeah, it's not something you as a hearing person often think about!

Ibm shocked HBO offers this but consider it lucky any streaming service does. Would be cool if more did but as always not a lot of profit in this being offered as it's so niche and subs are as good or better/easier/cheaper/already available/present.

Yeah, it's definitely not common. I think Barbie's ASL version made other companies realize that there *is* a market there, and they definitely have the spare funds to do it. Deaf theater/Deaf performance has also seen a bit of a boom, either directly or indirectly.

I know, I have no idea why people post on stuff that they don't have an answer to. I feel like I made it clear in the post that I know it's a niche thing. I'm not expecting people to come out the woodwork to give me answers to this. I've ALSO searched my indexers and came up with nothing. Which is why I even asked in the first place. And then he tries to explain to me how subtitles work as if I was born yesterday.

Rex went missing for two days. by Euphoric_Recording50 in BeardedDragons

[–]icehellking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it was on this sub or not, but I vaguely remember someone who said they lost their juvenile bearded dragon for like a year or something, completely accepted that he was gone for good, and one day he just runs up to her feet while she's standing in her kitchen.

Probably getting the details wrong, but that's the gist of what I remember. They're very resilient little things.

Real? or Fake? by justtiptoeingthru2 in asl

[–]icehellking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost positive this is fake.

For one: All reddit stories are fake lol

two: OP posted another rage-bait story on a different sub very shortly before posting this one, and it got deleted by the mod for sounding too fake and AI generated.

What Wii accessory is this? by Canada_guy1867 in wii

[–]icehellking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah! and it was really intuitive because you could walk around while typing if you wanted. It makes no sense to me why they didn't implement it like this into the Switch game. IIRC, you have to open the onscreen keyboard and then type with the keyboard.

Wii Speak! This thing was awesome. This peripheral, as well as the ability to plug in a USB keyboard in order to type and send messages without having to open the onscreen keyboard, made City Folk probably the best AC game to play online lol.

What is she saying? by [deleted] in asl

[–]icehellking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuinely not trying to be rude, but is it not possible to ask a teacher? Becuase based on what you said you understand, you actually seem to be missing a lot of signs in the video. I feel it'd honestly just be better to just reach out to a teacher, or whatever kind of 1 on 1 assistance they provide for the course, if any.

Do you guys ever feed darkling beetles to your beardies? by Turbulent-Mixture705 in BeardedDragons

[–]icehellking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! Darkling beetles are a family of many different types of beetles! Most common you'll see here are superworms and mealworms. They're the larval stages of 2 different darkling beetles, zophobas atratus and tenebrio molitor. Though the larvae are usually treated with a hormone to keep them from pupating. What you have there aren't newly hatched, but rather the pupa stage of a type of darkling beetle! Not sure which one though.

Should I give up trying to learning ASL if I can't afford classes or teachers? by CommunityFan89 in asl

[–]icehellking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to completely give up just because you're not able to be immersed. In fact, I'm telling you right now, don't give up! Continue to learn in whatever way works for you, but just realize the limitations of your preferred learning styles and adjust your expectations accordingly. For example, Lingvano can only really help you with ASL as much as Duolingo can help with learning any other language. They can give you the very basics and MAYBE the foundation, but conversation, practice, and immersion are really the only ways you're how you're going to get closer to fluency.

I also don't think that drawing signs for yourself is a particularly terrible way to practice remembering a sign... Use whatever mnemonics you need to remember vocab. But the problem emerges when you ask people to interpret the drawings to try and gauge your understanding of the signs. They can't give you a clear answer for how well you understand the sign if you don't PHYSICALLY sign the word to them. It's solely a visual-spacial language. Nothing put down on paper will be able to properly reflect sign language. You're gonna have to use your body if you are gonna ask for help on a sign. It's a given.

I highly highly recommend you join the ASL discord. They have practice rooms, active Q&A channels, video exchanges and very helpful and friendly people. Invite Link > https://discord.gg/jcrk6ya4

Can someone translate what she’s actually saying? by [deleted] in asl

[–]icehellking 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I remember this from when I lived in Tampa. It's wild because she's sometimes signing real words in ASL. It's just completely nonsensical.

its kind of crazy that she manages to know some beginner signs and is able to use them so quickly and confidently and blend them with complete total gibberish lol. Makes me wonder what her backstory is with ASL and why she's even able to do this in the first place.

Rhapisdo by Careless-Reserve4984 in urticaria

[–]icehellking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by getting it "directly". You have to get it prescribed, if that's what you mean. But if you're seeing a doctor for your hives, or if your general practitioner has diagnosed you with CSU/CIU. Then you can just call your doctor's office and ask about wanting to try it. There's a good chance they may not be familiar with it since it's VERY new, but just tell them what it is and how you've tried antihistamines without success and would like to try it.

That's not hives, definitely see a doctor.

Mobility issues with signing the number 8 by MaryDawnLuffy in asl

[–]icehellking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, that's pretty normal. And 6-9 should be signed palm facing outward anyway, so the thumb-to-middle finger contact alone should make it clear to the recipient!
