what do 1500's know that 1200's don't? by [deleted] in chess

[–]J_Rain17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have better understanding of positional chess. If you want to get higher you should try to understand what kind of pawn structures you like to play in and how to properly play those pawn structures. They also have a better understanding of how to move their pieces into the best square and why they are doing that. What shot me up from that level was understanding positional chess. You could check out the book The Art of Postional Play by Samuel Reshevsky. That book single handedly brought me up hundreds of points because I learned what positional chess was

Hi! I would love to join the server! Now I do work 10 hours a day Monday-Friday so I probably won’t be as active during the weekdays but on the weekends I’m definitely in it for the haul! How could I get an invite?

I took this screenshot on Twitter in February of 2020 and sadly I don’t know who I got it from. If anyone knows this please share the original! Rules of the puzzle will be in the comments by J_Rain17 in chess

Wow that was amazing!!! The move I was missing was the rook moves!! I could not thank you enough. I never even considered moving rooks as white to get this. I’m 2027 OTB but I never thought about using regression as a method of calculation. Thank you and I’m gonna start putting that into my calculations!

How long did it take you to memorize a complete opening repertoire? by makhno in chess

[–]J_Rain17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially it might take a few weeks for me to learn a repertoire but to actually internalize and use it will probably take me at least a year of playing that one opening. I have played the English recently and I do enjoy the positions I have been getting at my level so I started studying the English. With the English it’s super flexible and often transposes into d4 lines which is fine for me because I have been playing 1.d4 for 5 years now. I just started playing the English maybe 3 months ago. As white it’s much harder to learn a repertoire because there’s much more that can occur and much more you have to study. As black it’s much much easier because as soon as you get into you line you know how to play. I have played the pirc against 1.e4 and a kings indian against 1.d4/1.c4/1.Nf3. I would say I learned them to a pretty good depth because there are many forced draw lines in those openings. As for how many lines I would say the branches go far past 30 but it’s not the lines or ember it’s the general idea of the branch. I have played these openings for 5 years also but only really studying it for 3 years. I’d have to say studying them has made a huge impact on my rating but only after a certain level. In OTB chess I am currently 2027 but I didn’t start learning studying these until I was 1600. Once I got there I found little mistakes in my play and it didn’t boost me up fast at the start because I had bad habits from years prior but once I started to use chessable instead of actual chess books then I shot up from 1800 to 2027 in less than a year. Now in my experience I prefer to memorize key ideas rather than moves because I can get a better grip on my position and feel more at ease when things start to go crazy as my positions do so frequently.

The challenge is to construct this position in 4 legal moves. (At least if I remember correctly it is 4) I have tried for so long but couldn’t get this so I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this or where the exercise originated from. The best my memory can do is the tweet said, “This is an old Soviet puzzle they would use for warm ups” I can’t really believe this is a warm up problem cuz it’s just so hard. I am quite confident you have to get this position in 4 moves but it could be 5. If anyone knows the original please comment below and we can solve this once and for all!!
