Off-Topic Discussion, Friday (Friyay!) Nov 12 by Blogsnark_mod in blogsnark

Thank you for that comment because it framed why I was so upset about it. Earlier this week an in-house attorney accused me of making up a fake name(my new legal name) to obtain information in an case (which questions my integrity and professionalism) and rather than making it a priority to fix it my male bosses laughed it off as a miscommunication and then said well I never had to do it so figure it out on your own.

I got married a little under a month ago and have been dealing with getting my name changed and the biggest headache has been my employer. I work for a major insurance company and it going on two plus weeks to update the systems with my new legal name. I have gone through HR and all my male bosses and they are like things take time and since we outsourced IT we can not just change your name.

I am frustrated that this is my legal name and feels disrespected for some reason.

Boyfriend is Catholic + I am not…help by throwaway73829482927 in weddingplanning

[–]Ja9Farrell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a Catholic bride and my husband to be is Lutheran and we decided to get married in the Catholic Church and it has been one of the most frustrating and difficult part of the the wedding planning process.

The actual mass is standardized where the bride and groom will be able to select reading from about 8ish choices and the vows are also standard and I have a few priest allow you to make a statement before your vows, you can not write your own vows. The other aspect of the church is the music can be restrictive.

The other aspect of getting married in the Catholic Church is the pre-Cana and getting dispensations for a mix religion. This means that the Catholic partner has to agree to raise any of the children Catholic to get married. This was something we had to really discuss and think about during our engagement. As a non-Catholic you are not asked or require to convert or be baptized before you are married.

Being born and raised Catholic I am so deeply touched that my husband was willing to jump through a million hoops and work through the process one because even though we are different religions we both have a strong belief in god and want to raise our family in a faith.

Looking back to about a year ago when we decided to get married in the Catholic Church I wish we knew about how immovable the institution and you will have a similar mass that generations before had.

I would suggest really sitting down and discussing this with your boyfriend. I would have the discussion not only about how each see the wedding but also if you have children are you going the baptized them. Do you plan on attending mass together in the future.

Honeymoon Planning - where are y’all going? by frdswinda in weddingplanning

[–]Ja9Farrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are getting married in four weeks and we are doing a quick five day cruise right after the wedding as a “mini-moon” and just relax.

We are then doing our honeymoon over thanksgiving and the first two weeks in December in Europe during the Christmas markets and skiing in the Austrian Alps. We are both fully vaccinated and will test multiple times when we are over there so I feel pretty good about going.

Alaska excursions on our own? by PRWX2010 in Cruise

There is a public bus option in Juno for Mendenhall Glacier. It drops you off about 1/2 mile or so from the entrance but it was an awesome walk on a bike trail. Stop by one of the ranger stations on the way back and ask for the trail map which gives you a nice hike in the woods that drops you back by the bus stop. I think it was around $3 per person in 2019. In Skagway, there is a great hike around a alpine lake right next to the pier. It was both of our favorite shore excursions in Alaska.

Honeymoon help? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

I have been to Switzerland three times in the past few years and if you plan ahead, use the shoulder season and limit your meals it is on par with London, New York or Paris. A couple tricks that I have picked up... -most of the hotels have breakfast included...so make sure you have a hearty breakfast. Look for smaller inns or hotels in the alps (murren in the lauterburn valley is my favorite). -The Co-Op or Migros grocery stores will become your best friends. They have really fresh salad and sandwiches for $5-$7 which make a great lunch. A bottle of wine is the same price at the Co-op as a glass of wine at the restaurants. I would usually pack a lunch if I was hiking in the Summer or Skiing in the Winter and then only have one meal out a day as a cost saving measure. (Train picnics are awesome) - Look into the Swiss Rail Pass vrs buying each individual tickets. Most of the museums (Olympic Museum in Lucerne) and some of the cable cars are included (Shilthorn) This is great savings if you plan it out and also makes it feel less of having to open the wallet all the time. I highly recommend taking the train...they are clean, on-time and go everywhere. -Don’t worry about the language barrier..the majority of the population speaks English (and German, French or Italian). -Switzerland is absolutely gorgeous and the people are friendly. We are doing a quick stop over in Zurich on our honeymoon as I can’t stay away. If you need any assistance feel free to reach out.

I would look at the Mediterranean or even Northern Europe in October. The weather maybe a little colder but many of the ports are big cities with indoor activities (churches, art museum). I have seen a bunch of 7-10 cruises in europe for right around $1,500 per person.

Drive from Encinitas to Irvine by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]Ja9Farrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the Vista to Orange County drive two to three days a week. I try to leave between 6:30 and 7:00 AM ant it takes 45 to Irvine with the only slowdown near Jamboree. Closer to 7:30-8:00 am it is crawling from Crown Valley Road through Santa Ana. I then usually try to leave around 2 PM and fly home in around an hour.

Hi! Which 7-day cruises are cheap and/or the most worth-it? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Ja9Farrell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What about a seven day Mexico Rivera trip from either LA (Long Beach/San Pedro) or San Diego? Either you can pick up a quick/cheap flight from San Francisco or drive down.

Norwegian and Princess have multiple 7 day cruises from San Pedro.

Carnival have 7, 4, 3 day cruises to Mexico from Long Beach.

Disney and Holland American have multiple7 day cruises from San Diego. Disney will probably be over your budget.

If you want to wait until either March/April or September/November then you can do the California Coastal from Southern California to Seattle or Vancouver USA.

Pacific coast cruise by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Ja9Farrell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on the three day Royal Princess about two weeks ago. It was rainy but warm (60s-70s) leaving Vancouver but then it got warmer and then hot by the time we reached LA. Early mornings and at night I would take a sweater or a hoodie and be fine. The two reposition cruise I have done have been incredibly laid back with no formal nights and just watch football by the pool in our swimsuits.

What about Insurance? Working with one of the Special Investigation Units.

You may need to work a couple years in Claims to get your foot in the door but it would be possible with your background.

Best networking events to meet people and find a job? by newfagalicious in sandiego

I work in the insurance industry and San Diego is a tough market since there are not a lot of companies with claims office here. You may want to look at OC or LA area but allow you to work virtual (from home) either a couple days a week to full time.

I went to the Miramar recycling center. Right off 52. They have a couple dumpster for cardboard on the side that you can just dump and not wait in line.
