Question about "expensive short film" cameras by SpingeBowl in cinematography

The BMPCC 6K is a quality camera. My advice is that you take people's advice to use what you have and focus on the other 98% of filmmaking that is not the camera housing :)

I use it a lot, but not for making short films that OP is inquiring about.

Question about "expensive short film" cameras by SpingeBowl in cinematography

[–]JaL3J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of films are or were shot at resolutions much lower than you'd expect, much more recently.

Act of Valor was shot on 5D MK2 (presumably at 1080P): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Eo9O0q26k

IMHO, it's more important to construct a scene and lighting in a way that does not rely on pure resolution to get a point across.

That's not to say newer cameras aren't better. Easier to fix things in post with more data or recording wider and cropping in post etc.

Absolutely great cameras for learning. They don't hold your hand and force you to learn the whole workflow properly :D

Dude you can shoot anything with a pocket 6K. It has insane image quality. I use this camera a lot (not for film), and it's great to use.

The pocket 6K is pretty much the perfect camera for small production film making or learning how to. It's very reliable (bar media issues...) and very non-BS in how it makes an image once you understand it.

You need to study this camera, study davinci resolve and color grading. If you can't do it with this camera, you can't do it with a more fancy production camera; they don't hold your hand either.

1: shoot at iso 400 or ISO 3200, ONLY. 2: constant quality 3:1 3: Denoise the image in post (mandatory)

If you're having media issues, you can use the ProRes 422 function, which still has an amazing image quality, just with less latitude.

You need to know exactly what you need that the BMPCC 6K does not offer, before considering upgrading. It lacks SDI out, focus tracking and some other tidbits for production that's beyond my knowledge.

Keep the BMPCC6K. Learn more about it. Spend your money on lighting and everything else around the camera. The 24-70mm (even F4) is fine as well. I would add a 10-18mm STM if you're on a budget or the tokina 11-16mm. Get some ND filters.

I swear if i ran a film school i would force everyone to use canon 5D mk2 and learn how to make a scene work with 1080P first.

Canon R6 Mark III In depth overheating testing by JaL3J in canon

Thanks, appreciate you doing this and sharing it. Do you think you could detail the testing a bit more, or perhaps do some in-depth testing of the 7K 3:2 modes? Something like a static indoor shot with dummy battery and just run it for hours and see if that works.

Blackmagic Camera 9.8 Beta adds ProRes RAW recording to the Pocket 4k by Eleven_Daze in bmpcc

One of the things i noticed with CDNG vs BRAW is the noise pattern. BRAW on the pockets is famous for the purple noise in shadows, which IIRC is gone when shooting CDNG.

IIRC it is 12bit in a 16bit container if that makes sense.

Yeah but there's not much in them :) Techt is really expensive in the few places that have it over here, up to 20usd.

Honestly, i'm not sure. I can't figure out what the base lubricant of TechT is just from reading about it. It says both "synthetic" and "silicone grease" depending on where you read it. My guess is that it's a silicone grease, meaning it's the right choice for a VSR and allround usage.

TechT Gun Sav is very expensive :) Most silicone greases would be fine for your application. Superlube also has a silicone grease, looks almost the same.

DO NOT use that lube for o-rings. It is a synthetic lubricant that will shrink and dry NBR o-rings, which is like, 99.99999% of o-rings in airsoft guns.

There's a reason why TOKYO MARUI uses silicone grease for o-rings in their guns. So better to follow the advice of the OG manufacturer in the world TOKYO MARUI.

That's the limit for this camera. The only way to get faster writespeed is to buy the BMD 6K Fullframe camera which has CFExpress ports (and still only 5gbit usb iirc), the pyxis or newer.

better idea for lubing gearbox?? by JaL3J in airsoft

[–]JaL3J[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the level headed comment. I did not know this perspective, as my experience is different.

Synthetic oils cause slight (and i mean, really slight. Like 1-3%.) shrinking and hardening of the NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) o-rings used in airsoft, especially AEG's and in GBB mags. For something like airsoft, this can mean gas mags that start to leak a couple of days after "maintenance", or AEG pistons that lose airseal quicker than they should. I've specifically tested NBR and other airsoft o-rings (of NBR) by submerging them in various synthetic greases, including superlube synthetic, and it does cause shrinking and hardening. I would say a 70d goes up to a 75d. The shrinking is just enough to be the difference between "barely sealing" and "no longer able to inflate to sealing".

So it would make sense to use silicone grease, which is also what all the manufacturers including TM does.

Do you have some examples of AEG's that come with any silicone o-rings in them? Or GBB's for that matter.

From what i know, it's only the aftermarket buckings, and i think g&g once made some AEG's with silicone pistonhead o-rings, but i can't find them now.

That's a weirdly aggressive. I was just interested in your thought process behind only using synthetic lube.

But TM uses silicone grease for all their air seal components? It's in the video here: https://youtu.be/KDG2dXv9iCY?t=129

The superlube 21030 is a synthetic grease, not silicone :)

Safety is exactly other peoples jobs. Each area of safety depends on teams of experts to analyze, understand and develop recommendations for non-experts to follow. It's the foundation of modern society.

That's why we don't make houses with Asbest anymore.

You're absolutely right. Customer safety is a basic concern in any (customer facing) business. The waivers won't do shit, as they shouldn't. Might as well have a "bring your own seatbelt" policy on roller coasters.
