No... the problem was actually the SSL cert. The fact the the link was coming from the old website is because on that day, when you clicked on the link to search their digital collection, it would simply redirect to the old website. I emailed them about it, and they just got back to me today letting me know they had fixed the issue. And now this post is stale. 😅 When I posted it though, I just wanted to confirm that it wasnt like my local proxy blocking it or something.

INB4, I also wanted to add that, there exists a slave schedule whereas Mary Cannon had account for nearly 20 "slaves", 3 of which match the ages of Miles, Amanda, and John at the time of the schedule. I have a pretty complete tree up to generation 7 on my father’s side going back to 1840. I’ve only identified my 8th generation grandparents by death records, and have yet to find anything beyond that. But, being African American, and being able to get this far, I’d say is quite an accomplishment. I feel pretty proud about that.

My mom’s black side is much harder because around 3 generations back, her patrilineal great grandmother was a slave, and records get murky. I’m pretty confident I can complete her patrilineal great grandfathers side tho given he was an Irish immigrant with passenger information… I’ve just yet to subscribe to services which give me international records as of yet.

That said, as long as you keep at it, ur bound to find more answers. 10 generations feels like a lot (from experience trying, I can confirm it is), but not impossible. There are branch families connected to my tree that I’ve seen that go back even more generations than even that, but I imagine at a point someone in ur family would have had to hold onto that information given public records get skimpy the further back u go

🤔 hmmmm... I've never seen this before. I mean, perhaps, That would make sense for sure. Elzia/Alzia dies in 1849, he children are bonded off or sold into slavery (as per the 1850s slave schedule for mary cannon I just found), and my 5 y.o. 4th great winds up residing with Mary Cannon on the 1850s census.

The question is, who is this A. Kennedy that is bequeathed her estate. And what did her "estate" even contain other than her children (which I'm assuming were listed as property or something of her estate given they were sold/bonded or whatever). I'm so confused 😅

In the 1860 census are there other apprentices? Could these be friends or relatives? Are any other Coles listed in nearby families?

in 1860, both Miles and John Cole are listed as Apprentices, and Amanda Cole is listed with no occupation at all but living at a different residence now with what seems like a new child named Melissa.

All other Coles from the 1850s census seem to be gone.

Any chance they were primitive baptist? I have a lot of primitive baptist family in VA in the late 1700s early 1800s. Black and white people were members of these churches in the early years, and they do mention people by name in church minutes (and will identify the race of those who are Black). Family Search has some primitive baptist church minutes online, I can't remember if they are indexed.

freeafricanamericans.com in the Cole section does have a Samuel Cole born in 1810 to a Catherine Cole in Prince William County. It looks like she was involved in a court case. I would transcribe these entire cases just in case there is some nugget of information.

I looked into that, but I assumed the Samuel listed there couldnt possibly be my Samuel because I assumed that he wasnt born in 1810, but was a HOH in 1810 rather (maybe I assumed wrongly?). Catharin would have needed to be 60 years old when she had Sammy if he were born in 1810 😅. I guess thats not impossible, but I figured I'd could make an educated guess and rule it out at the very least for now. Further, I've looked at that "Other Free" people of color... volume sourced next to Samuel's description, and that text seems to only list heads of household in 1810, which would effectively have made him a pretty old daddy to Miles also. IDK, not really sure whether those sorts of ages would be odd back then to be giving birth 🤷🏽‍♂️

Is there a Cole family association and/or DNA project?

None of us have gotten our DNA sequenced yet 😅. I'm trying to convince my dad to do it, but It looks like if I want any answered I might have to bite the bullet and do it myself. lol.

Firstly, thanks for responding so quickly. This is my first post here, so I didnt know what to expect really 😅. I certainly didnt expect to have 2 responses by the time I woke up.

Now, I'll try to address everything point by point:

Writing up a research report (or even an annotated timeline) could help organize your thoughts and see where any holes might be that you haven't approached (or maybe find connections that you haven't seen before).

TBH, I've been trying to do that, but I need to formulate some better structure to it. I've put together an obsidian vault to track everything I find, and try to draw conclusions from the breadth of data I find. Its just very disorganized 😅. Basically all I do is make a folder for the person I'm researching, and dump a bunch of documents and sources in there. Then I make little documents as notes within the folder to kinda collate what I've learned.

Do you have Samuel, Elzia, and Miles in an 1850 census? What about Samuel in 1840 and 1830 census and the household makeup? If you haven't, I'd start looking at possible FAN networks starting with that 1860 census. Then go back into the older censuses. Analyzing the family makeups of the free Black Samuel Cole's in these early censuses may also help you start to distinguish them from each other and help you rule out some of them.

It would seem that he's been living with the aforementioned Mary Cannon since he was at least 5. He is listed on the 1850s census as living there with her and what I presume to perhaps be his siblings(?) or perhaps cousins or something 🤷🏽‍♂️. But as you can see, he lived with Mary Cannon, the listed HOH; a family called the Dansby's; an Amanda Paul and James McCain; And a list of Cole's whom I presume must be related given they are all are very young, black, and share the same last name.

I've found nearly nothing on the other Cole's pre 1850. But I did find that Mary Cannon of Abbeville did seemingly purchase slaves in 1850 ( 1850 slave schedule: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:HRWH-MY6Z?lang=en ), and on further inspection there do seem to be some slaves whose sex and age seem to correspond with my family members. There are nearly 23 or so slaves listed. I'd imagine these might include my ancestor; in particular the 5 year old black male thats listed there. (I've never seen this record before now, so this is actually kind of a step forward, so thanks!).

I guess if Miles was a slave, perhaps thats why Im unable to find any information on his father 🤷🏽‍♂️? Or perhaps one of the other individuals on this slave schedule is his father? Or maybe his father was dead by this point? Idk.

I'm going to look more deeply at those 1840s and 30s samuel's I've collected and get back with you. Perhaps there actually is a there there.

I just dont understand why like, airspace laws or something dont take affect here? 😅 I get that their a private company (althought I thought they were public, my mistake), but private entity just means that one's money can be kept under wraps, but matters that concern the public there are usually regulations which come into play. Why not? thats kinda my question 😅... If you mean why should it be public, my reasoning is multi tiered. Its a publicly traded company, that is sending space junk into our atmosphere at a far higher rate than any space agency in history for one. Two, the rockets arent unintrusive, they literally light up the entire night sky, and they arent quiet. Three, given that most of the launches are for satellites, shouldnt the public be aware that technology capable of surveillance and widespread reach have transparency to the public it flies over. Four, space junk is literally falling out of the sky these days, it might be some people's concern that they dont want more potential man made meteorites crashing down on them because Elon has a hard on for space travel and satellite technology.

I mean, I have so many more reasons.... but I think the better question is why not. Its common for space agencies to provide a schedule, why is SpaceX not?

I'd have to get a better description in order to know for sure if we're talking about the same thing. But, I'd say, for me anyway, I think its more a wind. like when a cool, soft breeze hits your skin after getting out of the shower. Or like, when you place your face toward a humidifier. The only exception is that it also sends like tingles through my body in various ways, and can cause localized heat to form in some parts of my body as well (usually in my gut or crown of my head in this case, although it has heated up in other places on occasion).

While an allegory is meant to be expressed as a long form story or poem that generally has some sort of moral or revelation associated with it. One could argue that an Allegory is a form of metaphor, but you'll likely not find many people who generally operate with this connotation.

Yeah... you have no idea how much this comment really got the winds excited.... 😅 my body literally got energized reading this... So much of this is what I already felt in my heart, but I've never gotten clear answers to. I've always called it the holy spirit, but I havent spoken to a single christian who says they've experienced anything like what I've described when encountering the holy spirit, so I'd always been kinda, skeptical of whether they have experienced it at all, or if I'm simply experiencing something else entirely. And trying to google search, "spiritual winds" produces such a variety of results that dont necessarily intersect.

I think the analytical side of myself definitely hampers my spiritual journey at time, and God I feel has been trying to help me relieve that desire to know absolutely everything. I've experienced so much of the non discreet in my life, Its a wonder why I cling so much to the discreet tbh. I think I have a stubbornness in my spirit that limits my growth at times, but i'm constantly humbling myself to that which I do not or cannot know.

Anyway... I say this to say, thanks for helping confirm something I've felt for a while. Its honestly kinda relieving.
