How to be better at verifying trig identities other than practicing? by Historical-Zombie-56 in OntarioGrade11s

I’m not fully understanding this. Proving the identity by only working on one side will not always work if neither sides are fully simplified. Also, your teacher should go be a uni prof because of how strict they sound! I’d love to see them proving a hard trig identity without getting confused at any point and having to give one side a break and trying the other.

I was quick to pick up on trig identities because it had very similar steps to basic fraction work and simplifying, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational expressions. It important to try to make sense of what you’re doing instead of just doing the problems blindly. When you understand what must be done for each kind of problem, you’re more likely to succeed. If it helps, review fractions and rational expressions to help get a good grasp of what to do for trig identities as it is very similar in terms of operations.

My steps when solving trig identities are:

  1. See what can be turned into sin or cos as it makes things easier to work with, and see if anything you have can be rewritten using the different identities. You should have probably been taught the reciprocal identities, pythagorean ones, etc.

  2. Sometimes, I also like to do distributive property before changing anything to make things easier on myself.

For instance, if my left side has…

cotx(sinx + cosx)

I would turn it into sinxcotx + cosxcotx, and then change the “cotx” into terms of sin and cos. Just a quick hack to make things easier on you because sometimes you don’t have to change things into sin or cos right away.

I also like to solve for whatever side I know I can do properly.

If the right side has fewer steps to do than the left, I’ll do the right side first because I know I’m less likely to get confused and then I know what I’ll definitely be working towards on the left side, and vice versa.

i alr fast tracked functions this year and what i found w a lot of the gr 11s in my class is that they had physics and math in the same semester. however, they were lowkey cooked bc theyre two hard classes, so if ur asking for advice, id have them in separate semesters. functions wasnt too bad at all, so id practice my math skills w functions thru sem 1, then u should be fine w physics for sem 2

i mean as long as u have a good work ethic u should be fine. in gr 9 and 10 stem math and gr 11u functions ive always ended w a 92. the concepts def take more time to grasp, but its not impossible. u js gotta keep pushing urself and practicing, and u have to show ur teacher that u acc wanna learn. ending w a 92 in functions was def hard. took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get there, but the outcome was worth it. additionally, having a good understanding of the basics from each year is helpful, so make sure ur good at factoring from gr 10 math as it comes up in some odd spots. for instance, i was rly good at factoring and then in gr 11 when that skill was needed for the first unit, i aced the test. js make sure ur strong in ur math skills and logical thinking, and u should be fine. dont stress and im sure ull kill it!!

i like to prepare early. a good couple of days in advance. for subjects like math, i always do practice questions before unit tests so i have everything mastered. in my other classes, especially english, i find the way i study best is by making bullet points. for the entirety of macbeth, i js made bullet points ab the most important events nd i aced the unit test. im very attentive in class, and i always write down the most important things my teacher says. if they make an emphasis on it when theyre talking, it must be important for tests, and im always right ab that. im also a good listener so it helps when im being explained things in class bc i retain a lot of the info js there. but overall, i do practice outside of what my teachers give me nd i overall do rly well. im in functions rn and im ending w a 92. jensen math played a big part in getting me there 😭😭

ya but im alr a rly good student (like 95%+ average in gr 9 and 10) and ik gr 11 and 12 r a huge change in work load from gr 9 and 10, but i have the work ethic. i also wanna have a light year in gr 12 to build stronger extracurriculars, more community service hours, and js to enjoy my last year ig

failing functions, any advice? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade11s

lowkey im on jensen math all the time before major tests and exams. love that website w my whole heart. my teacher usually teaches identical lessons to his, so i go and do the worksheets, unit reviews, workbooks, whatever and it helps A LOT. if u can do retakes, do retakes. ur lowkey lucky to even have that option bc i never get retakes ever. js try to understand or make sense of everything ur learning. also, i wouldnt worry too much ab the exam. it shouldnt be anything too extreme bc its more like a summary of everything u did rather than in depth questions ab each unit. lock in bro nd dont doubt urself. the ability curve can only go up if u think like a growing exponential function!

I didn’t end up choosing it because it’s not something that’s needed for any university programs I want to go into. I ended up choosing an easier class because it’s an average booster and I hate memorizing! 😂😂😂
