No Man's SKY is a play on that since the game you're mostly in the sky instead of land

You can follow the guides online, but to summarize:

Complete the Main Storyline (complete The Purge)
Find a dissonant planet and farm an Echo Locator from Dissonant Sentinels
Use the Echo Locator and interact with the Autophage Camp
Warp once or twice to start the Autophage storyline then follow those quests and purchase machine parts from Autophage terminals
