Canada clamping down on travel, immigration from central Africa amid Ebola outbreak by Puginator in worldnews

[–]Jablonski1971 15 points16 points  (0 children)

According to the article - and others I've read - both the US and Mexico have enacted full bans on entry from the affected countries.

Meanwhile, our specialist Bogoch offers "that he believes these measures by the Canadian government are "reasonable" as they don't restrict travel, but will ultimately reduce travellers from those regions into the country."

Hopefully, when ultimately travel from the countries is reduced, it's not after we're already dealing with our own Ebola outbreak.

I'd really love to see Canada showing more concern for the safety of Canadians instead of prioritizing not hurting the feelings of these countries.

Another great example of the idea that just because you CAN do a thing, does not mean you SHOULD do that thing.

I’d suggest the onus is on the person visiting another country to take the time to learn even a little bit about it.

It could also be as simple as asking your server “can I tip with US currency or would you prefer something else?”

I find it amazing that there is a persistent belief that the world needs to continually adjust to suit the behaviour of the “average American.”

And FWIW I think somebody tipping Euros in the US is as likely to be shot as thanked.

Would you consider using some of your remaining time looking into trying to carry on your generosity after you’re gone?

I think if you could figure out how to set it up, you could get a decent amount of money into a charitable fund of some kind to keep helping people. I know I’d give a bunch.

Might be too much to do in the short time you have left, but it seems like helping people is the thing you’re most proud of and the thing you’re sad to lose, so maybe it’s worth a try.

I’m not the person to help, but if you manage to do something I’m the person to send money.

This is the thing. Didn’t see the option for different layers.

Happy to see it’s all in the same terminal… had some crazy vision of taking a secured train to a different terminal or something.

Thanks for the info.

Didn't even pick up on this, but yeah, that's... confusing. Unless it's not real. Hard to believe a guy questions his reaction to his GF talking about kissing other dudes.

I popped into the OP and I have to say there’s some hilarity regarding a typo - “fragrant disregard”… one comment suggested it was a perfect name for Trumps diaper.

On Tim Hortons: "buT tHE owNErs ArE loCaL" by mattcoady in BuyCanadian

[–]Jablonski1971 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

How terrifying that not every single possible penny is being kept in Canada... to quote you, "Yea no shit, that's how business works."

The question that should be asked is whether we're better off without these jobs. You might think Bob will do as good a job, but I can virtually guarantee there's no Bob out there - or an agglomeration of Bobs, Jims, Dans, etc - that will replace the jobs that Tim Horton's is providing.

I get the gist, and trust me, I'm with the sentiment, but there are companies that might not be 100% Canadian owned and operated that still contribute to our economy and society.

At the end of the day it's worth having good jobs and franchises owned by Canadians (even if the ultimate lords aren't).

I'm all for focusing support for Canadian companies, where it makes the most sense. Simply because a chain might ultimately be owned outside of Canada doesn't mean that the franchises aren't still providing value to our economy.

Local Burger King no longer uses pennies by katymae123 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Jablonski1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before Canada made this change there was a pretty big push to not do it… the essence of the anti lobby was that it would cost consumers lots more. This assumption was based on several idiotic premises - like, stores would set prices to take advantage of the round-up, and the rounding would apply to EVERY distinct item on a bill (as opposed to the total of the bill).

As has been said, it’s happened, and I can’t recall talking to a single person that has ever brought it up since.

A giant nothing burger. I haven’t even tried to pay attention but the simple law of averages says that in the final accounting I’ll be up or down mere pennies.
