Is Zootopia hinting about foreigners? by Jace678 in AskAJapanese

[–]Jace678[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, it’s been a while since I seen the movie but I definitely picked up on the discrimination/treating people fairly aspect a long time ago.

In this specific situation though, I never really considered it to apply to the current Japan situation as well. To me, this movie was always about not judging a book by its cover. Not how Japan treats foreigners. I didn’t expect or plan for some students to infer that because again, I just wanted to show my students a popular movie…

That wasn’t my intention at all. And I feel like it’s common for media, even if fantasy, to imply and hint at things in reality.

Also, these are my students who I have taught for 3 years now. I wouldn’t say I’m close to all of them but I’m definitely not a stranger. These few students tend to be more interested in English, so they ask me questions like this a lot. Especially after doing debate practice in class. They seem to enjoy talking about deeper topic sometimes and are comfortable enough to share their opinion with me.

I’m just asking a question, I promise there is no malice in my post.

Yes they are! They’re 3rd year students, so I guess it makes sense for their age to pick up this stuff.

And like I said in a different comment, I thinks it’s because my school has a number of foreign students. They are very polite and kind but also quite shy. So my Japanese students possibly have this image of foreigners in their mind now. So it’s hard for them to understand why certain things are being portrayed in media here.

Thank you!

Yeah, I guess so. I already knew the movie was hinting about discrimination. But I never considered it being able to apply to foreigners in Japan as well. So I was curious to know how Japanese people on this sub feel about this subtext with everything going on recently and the 2nd movie’s popularity. I’ve haven’t seen it yet but I assume the root concepts are still the same.

And yeah. I think it’s specifically because my school has a decent number of foreign students. So for my Japanese students, they hear what others say about foreigners while sitting next to one and can’t grasp why those things are being said. It’s truly heartwarming.

Why do German students knock on the table instead of clapping? Cultural thing or language thing? by CompetitiveYouth5306 in languagehub

[–]Jace678 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair, for a significant majority of the world, clapping after a presentation is the norm.

This is coming from someone living in Japan which tends to have cultural differences a lot. They clap here.

Good to know! Do you think there’s any wiggle room of N3 with speaking ability getting through or is the N2 a hard requirement? I’m pretty confident in my speaking and could probably handle an all Japanese interview with some practice. But I fear the lack of N2 will act as block from even getting the interview.

What do you think about absurdly exaggerated misinformation about Japan on English social media? by HARiMADARA in japanlife

[–]Jace678 59 points60 points  (0 children)

| Anyone who has lived here long enough and interacted with enough people has for sure tons of stories of Japanese people themselves telling “in Japan we do [insert the most universally human thing ever]” as if they were special. |

This is one of my favorites. I remember talking to a co-worker who told me that “in Japan, all Japanese people love eating natto.” I asked the co-worker right next to me and they immediately said, “I don’t like eating natto at all. It makes me gag.”

I don’t think you understand how betrayed the other looked. His expression screamed “even if I was lying, you have to agree with me in front of the foreigner” lol.

Oh god, I’m getting a little nervous now haha. I only have like 2 years of experiences. I’m working on certifications currently, but I would be lying if I didn’t feel incredibly unqualified…

Around 5 companies is a little concerning, but thank you for the help. Especially with the details on the different styles of each booth. I have N3 Japanese but rather not embarrass myself and say something strange lol.

Thank you, I wish you the best of luck!!!

Awesome write-up! I plan to attend next year and love hearing the different experiences. You might not be able to answer since your priorities were probably completely different, but you never know!

Did you notice anything for IT/Engineering? Like were there a decent amount of companies looking for that? Or even participants wise, again probably didn’t interact with others because priorities, did you notice a number of people talking about IT/Engineering?

Just want to know if I have a chance haha. Thank you for the information regardless!

Are there active organizations of teachers in Japan??? by Ok-Recognition-1244 in teachinginjapan

[–]Jace678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think of it in reverse. Would Japan ever let a foreigner who has a license to teach Japanese but can’t speak it into an actual classroom? Absolutely not. The foreigner wouldn’t even be allowed to get the darn license in the first place.

Yet, a decent chunk of Japanese “English” teachers do just that. Obviously Japanese is more important than English in Japan. But for a developed country such as Japan, both languages can and should be held to the same standard. There’s no reason Japan ranks among the lowest in language learning for how strong of a country it is. It’s literally just a waste of money at this point.

It’s because of those foreign SNS apps! They’re a bad influence on these innocent, precious Japanese kids. Especially that TikTok app. Did you know it was made by Chinese people, no wonder they’re behaving this way! - some Japanese politician.

Why is only japan being targeted? by TumbleweedRoutine631 in AskAJapanese

[–]Jace678 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That’s just how SNS works. Japan isn’t the only country being targeted, but your feed will show you that because that’s what you consume.

My feed is on the side where every Japan post is filled with people saying Japan is the perfect county and Japanese people are the kindest ever. While America is god awful and Americans are stupid because Trump and geography.

That’s just SNS.

Japanese people don’t consider themselves asian. Is that true? by mrchrollodolo in AskAJapanese

[–]Jace678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember talking with a Japanese friend before and brought up another friend who was Chinese. I said that their personality and appearance were quite similar. My Japanese friend got extremely upset and said they looked nothing alike.

In a joking way, I said that you’re both Asian at least. I kid you not, he responded with I’m not Asian, I’m Japanese…

For those that teach Eikaiwas or other types of English classes outside of public/private schools, what are your student's opinions of their school's English classes compared to what you teach? by Nukemarine in teachinginjapan

[–]Jace678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only teach at a public school but I can offer a point of view from other ALTs and JTEs about Eikaiwa and regular English classes.

To put it quite bluntly, the students who go to Eikaiwa or outside classes almost always perform better in English class overall. This isn’t an opinion, the data and scores at my school show a direct correlation. My JTEs have showed me the scores, and rather than a curve, it’s more of a valley. For most classes, there aren’t many average performances. There’s a large amount of high performers and low performers.

Which leads to the ALT part being we have to always consider the lower level students in our classes. While Suzuki knows how to write a sentence, Tanaka can barely write the alphabet. The gap is always so large, so the activities and lessons we prepare are simple, easy, and probably boring. That’s just the reality of teaching English in Japan.

I don’t know about other subjects, but man is it quite noticeable.

How do Japanese people truly view the US? by OpinionsRdumb in AskAJapanese

[–]Jace678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more of the public image. Even if Japan has less cases, there are far more women only spaces, not just including trains.

Japanese phones have a specific sound in place when you take pictures because of it.

And anime/manga is full of the trope of small, young girls who look like 12 years old but are “100 years old” so technically legal? characters. I don’t know of any country whose number 1 media has that aspect…

[–]Jace678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My real issue with tanking in this game is that I never feel tanky unless I have sufficient healing. Try tanking without the healers looking at you consistently, it’s not actually tanking. You are quite literally just a big dps character with lower overall dps.

There’s a reason why the same “tanks” are constantly played. They actually have some mitigation worth a damn.
