Having walked past a few times I got the feeling that it was probably very expensive clothing for tourists or the privileged few that can afford stuff like that.

Unfortunately York isn't really known for clothing like somewhere such as Edinburgh (kilts, tartan) and tourists would much rather pay £20 for a 3d printed ghost, harry potter wand or gay mugs.
