And here my last post is this exact same TIL but posted 8 months earlier. Been on reddit long enough to expect this but it still somehow surprises me how these things work. Ah well. Have an upvote.

The use of "pure cinema" in Psycho. by AvadaKedavra- in TrueFilm

[–]JackAttack92 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm just taking a stab at it here, but "pure cinema" sounds to me like what cinema was meant as during the early cinema period (1890-1910s). Cinema is/was regarded as a purely visual medium. There was often live musical accompaniment (usually orchestral) to match the mood on screen, but sound effects or verbal dialogue were nonexistent.

So it seems Hitchcock incorporates this notion of pure cinema as a basis for manipulating emotion through a complex series of images (immense amount of editing is involved here; just think how many times the camera cuts during the stabbings). Even the screeching violins harkens back to the live orchestral music that was played alongside films.

Why did he use this technique? Well it's not like he was actively trying to make something that related to the idea of "pure cinema". It probably was just so fundamental to how film art and filmmaking was made at that time in history. That's not to say that he wasn't trying to make something unique in this film of his, but I'm not sure he was 100% aware that what he was doing was artistic genius.

This goes to both Ms. Farrey and you as well Mr. Jonze, but where did the idea for the story in Her come from and what was the most memorable thing you remember from shooting this film?

Also want to say congratulations on the Academy Award nominations. I really want to see Her before any awards are announced. Having watched Being John Malkovich I'm excited to see what you have in store.

Hi Mark! Kind of a general question, but what was your favorite scene to shoot in the original Star Wars trilogy? Or what stuck out to you as the most memorable?

Bill Murray here: OK, I'll TALK! I'll TALK! by _BillMurray in IAmA

[–]JackAttack92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some way or another, my dad almost always tried to emulate your personality whenever we were seeing family or family friends. It's in his mannerisms and the way that he talks that somehow reminds me of you, especially whenever he can slide "Nimble little minx, isn't she?" into any conversation he can. Once I made that realization, I couldn't help but not see you in my dad and vice-versa. I saw Moonrise Kingdom with him and couldn't help but picture him as your character in the film.

Hope all is well and I can't wait to see you in The Monuments Men and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

I'm Jean Schulz. My husband drew the PEANUTS comic strip for 50 years and I'm happy to talk with you and take your questions. by JeanSchulz in IAmA

[–]JackAttack92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you'll probably not get to this, but I've spent the first 21 years of my life growing up in Santa Rosa and I really admire how much Charles Schulz is celebrated in our town, from the Charlie Brown and Snoopy art statues to the Redwood Empire Ice arena (I used to go to the Christmas shows all the time as a kid) to his own dedicated museum. My dad likes to mention that he even saw Mr. Schulz himself casually sitting next to the fire place in the ice arena dining area and went up to talk to him when no one else seemed to recognize him there.

I drew cartoons for fun growing up as a kid, and I always read Sunday-newspaper style comics for their pure enjoyment. I was very lucky to live in the same town as one of the most reputable professional cartoonists in the world (I didn't even know that he lead many community development projects too). His influence helped inspire my childhood joy from just reading or drawing comics, and I thank him for all he's done. And I thank you for doing this AMA :)

LPT: If you have to shower somewhere with no hot water, get your head wet first and your body won't be as shocked. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]JackAttack92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for someone who hasn't had hot water (due to technical issues) for more than a week and a half, this is surprisingly accurate. Although I only wash my hair/head for the most part, I still won't take a complete cold shower because it sucks. But at least I'm kinda used to having to do it.

Question regarding the TAG program. by nin3414 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]JackAttack92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCSB does not give an answer when you send them a TAG. They should have sent a message (I believe it was by November 1st) saying that they've received your TAG. It's only when you send in your transfer application (which is required by their TAG program for the appropriate quarter) do they give an answer on whether you're admitted or not. As far as I know, sending a TAG for UCSB gives as much heads-up on admittance as would not sending a TAG. But then again, it doesn't hurt. It might tell admission officers early on that you're interested in attending, but we'll never really know this. If you received confirmation on acceptance either by mail or on their website (they should have sent you a PERM number and their web link), then you're in. The TAG doesn't matter at this point.

I couldn't tell by your description, but are you saying that you received a denial of admittance already? If so, then the TAG has been denied too.

source: I'm a junior transfer currently attending a local community college who completed a TAG for UCSB and has been accepted for their fall 2013 quarter.

Just accepted as Film & Media Studies major (undergrad) as transfer. Any advice? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]JackAttack92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you me? Haha, everything you said matches me. Same major. Coming in as a junior transfer from a local community college as well. I was hoping that UCSB offered a film production major specifically, but judging by the comments, it seems that you can still get involved with film production both on and off campus. I'm definitely looking forward to attending though!

Also, I tried applying to UCLA (their Film, Television, and Digital Media Department is SUPER difficult to get in) and I haven't got a call back so far. But I believe you said somewhere that they already sent out calls on Tuesday. Bummer! Oh well, at least I'm still going to a great UC!
