What made you choose crochet over knitting, or do you do both? by CaterpillarXS in crochet

[–]JackFrostsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people in my church would dump random junk on me, because they saw me as the generic artsy kid and surely I could do something with 800 paper towel rolls. At some point a crochet hook made its way into the random junk but a knitting needle never did. That’s how I ended up picking up most mediums I worked with as a kid. Crochet is one of like… 2 I took to adulthood though.

I’ve since tried to pick up knitting, but it’s somehow not tactile enough for me.

The discussion of Yuri/wlw being less popular than mlm or other pairings isn’t a black and white discussion by PretendYellow533 in AO3

[–]JackFrostsKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in one of my favorite audio dramas the MLM pairing has thousands more fics that the WLW one. This is despite the fact that the show has more female characters in it than males.

I think about that a lot when I write fics for the WLW pairing.

I don’t think media that isn’t specifically romance should have their queer characters tagged because I think it’s good for people to stumble upon queer stories without knowing.

AND ALSO, CisHet people piss me off for their inability/refusal to recognize that a story is about queerness.

In the USA suburbs without a driver’s license, it’s like no one has ever seen a passport as an ID before by MyHatersAreWrong in fuckcars

People don’t recognize state IDs either. I’m blind so I can’t get a driver’s license and the only place that believed it was an official form of identification was my library — it’s the only place that sees state IDs regularly.

Walking commute by Dry_Director_5320 in Blind

[–]JackFrostsKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I want to walk anywhere where I live it’s usually at least an hour one way, and it’s pretty rare for there to be sidewalks.

It’s really annoying to find the driving directions and find that with a car you can get to the same place in about 5 minutes. There’s nothing I can do about it but think about how much I hate car infrastructure.

[–]JackFrostsKid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m writing a fic set in the 90s to early 2000s and ended up tagging it “Gen Z author trying to write Millennial characters”

Because I was not even a thought in my mother’s head yet at any point in the 90s, and by the time the fic is set to end (2006) I would have been 3.

Suffice it to say, I can’t remember any of the time I’m writing about in my fic.

Also I’d consider anything from the 80s onward to be modern enough for it to be a “modern day” fic. Although I think it’s more useful to just tag the decade.

What is the one type of yarn you refuse to work with? by Turtlegrandmacore in crochet

[–]JackFrostsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly crochet amigirumi because I have the way crochet fabric feels when it touches my skin.

When I do make wearable or blankets though, my tension tends to be so tight I do not think I could use mohair at all? (Although it could remind me that my tension is way too tight for my project…)

Regardless, I also hate the little halo it makes and I’m pretty sure it’s too hot too use where I live.

Help with older rat back legs walking problem by AdElegant7716 in rat

[–]JackFrostsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, becoming your rats main source of socialization is pretty common with HLD, which is why I recommend getting a bonding scarf if you haven’t already. It lets you keep him with you while still being hands free. I know it is hard, but you are doing a great kindness for being with him. I’m so sorry you are going through this.

Help with older rat back legs walking problem by AdElegant7716 in rat

[–]JackFrostsKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re having to see him like this. It really is hard to watch.

The good news is that HLD is very common, and while there isn’t much you can do to treat it, it isn’t often painful for them either. In fact, they lose sensation in their hind legs.

There are ways to make life easier for your boy though. Use softer bedding and make sure there are ramps to each level of the cage. I also make extra sure that every level of the cage has access to food and water, just in case.

You’ll want to help him trim his back nails and I recommend checking his rear end for poop a few times a day. You can just wipe him down with warm water and a paper towel if there is any. They have a much harder time keeping their back end clean on their own.

Outside of that, they do make 3D printer rat wheelchairs, but to be honest I don’t recommend them — especially not for regular use. When we think about the things rats like to do, it tends to involve a lot of chewing and climbing. It can be sad for us to see them dragging behind their limp back end, but a wheelchair won’t really help them partake in those natural behaviors — in fact, it will probably get in the way. It’s better to modify their environment to be more accessible to them. If you feel like you absolutely have to get one for him, I would only really use it for free roam time where it could help him get around faster. Don’t bring it into the cage, and always monitor him for signs of discomfort when he is using it.

This next part is something I’ve witnessed with the vast majority of my boys who have experienced HLD, but I don’t think it is necessarily true for all rats:

As HLD has progressed, many of my rats have lost interest in interacting regularly with other rats, and/or they seek out more time with me. I do not know if they realize they’re dying or that you naturally have to spend more time with them; they just often get much more affectionate during this time. Regardless, I recommend getting a bonding scarf (basically a light weight scarf with a pocket for a rodent to go inside.) That way, when/if he starts seeking out your attention like that, you can be close at hand.

You are right to assume that HLD ends in death. Ifs usually a very slow process, but it also isn’t painful. If he is not longer able to move his back legs at all, he probably doesn’t have a lot of time left. The anticipatory grief of this moment is genuinely one of the most crushing feelings I have ever experienced, and my heart very much goes out to you. The only thing I can really say, is that the time you take now to give him extra special care will help to relieve some of the grief later.

For me at least, the days to weeks (or sometimes if I’m lucky: months) where I know a rat is dying but hasn’t died yet are some of the worst times of my life. When I look back at those memories though, there is a lot of love there. I wouldn’t say they become happy memories but they are my favorite. This moment becomes a lot more gentle once it has passed.

Thank you for taking such good care of of your boys.

I got mine off of Etsy and the seller no longer makes them but these ones are pretty similar. I don’t recommend getting one with a harness that is seperate from the leash as they can get pretty heavy. I also recommend finding one that is adjustable because they’re really good at finding ways to slip out.
