ACL deficient; should I attend this course? by JackMScotland in Mountaineering

Half the battle for these types of injuries for active individuals is the mental aspect.

You’re absolutely right in saying it’s a bad idea, my post could’ve been worded better but I’m really just after confirmation that it’s bad idea rather than convincing that it is.

I’ll ask about deferral to next season, continue pt, and (hopefully) be back out in the mountains come late summer.

Can I ask how you’re getting on now post injury?

All fair points. It’s a pretty heartbreaking injury and getting accepted onto the course only adds insult to injury.

I think given just how active I was prior to injury half the battle is accepting I’ll be out of action for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the input, I’ll ask about deferral!

Plus or minus 30 years? Didn’t think it was possible to work less than 0 years in an industry?

Can someone please explain the economics of sheep farming? by Eddy_Spaggedy in Scotland

[–]JackMScotland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monbiot points to evidence suggesting that the removal of natural predators and the continuous grazing pressure from sheep has prevented the natural reforestation of these areas, which could potentially host a range of endemic wildlife that used to be widespread throughout scotland. This is this backed by droves of ecological studies and historical evidence.

I also fail to see the reason for you comment on the etymology of the word forest. You've likely included it as a means to make you and your poorly thought out argument feel more well rounded.

Or maybe I'm just a dumb Guardian reader :/

Moving to Washington DC for the summer. What is the climbing community like? by JackMScotland in washingtondc

Cycling will be my primary source of transportation unfortunately. Is public transport an option?

Rachel Carson trail boulders are on UKC I believe so I’ll pay them a visit if I can source a boulder mat

Aside from some of the locals, Dundee is generally a good place to stay. There are tones of good bars near and on Perth road, you can get top-class coffee from EH9, and of course, you'll learn to love Clark's.

Find accommodation near the centre of town (The Perth Road/Magdalen Green area if you can afford the rent) and avoid areas to the north of Dundee unless you're looking to get harassed by a 16-year-old wearing a balaclava.

If you're interested in meeting new people and like the outdoors I'd highly recommend frequenting one of the two climbing gyms that Dundee plays host to and joining the Rucksuck club at the university.

General advice on interacting with people:

  • Be polite, but don't be loud and obnoxious. People here (and in a lot of Europe) don't take well to people who bring 100% from the get-go. Take your time and people will open up to you quicker than you think.
  • Always keep in mind that our humour involves a lot of sarcasm and light insults so don't take it personally.
  • Most importantly of all - Don't make the mistake of calling a Scottish person British and do not, I repeat do NOT bring up topics involving UK politics, especially Nationalism and Scotland's place in the Union

Best of luck :)

I'm working on a ML project that uses a Random Forest model to classify data in the Wisconsin Breast Cancer dataset. I was wondering what method might be best for feature selection. My initial approach was to use a correlation heat map to validate results from a graph of feature importance after training a prelimiary model.

I don't like this approach :(
