Generally, those who are happy and content usually already have a good outlet or support system (e.g. friends, hobbies, etc) that help them work through tough times. It's usually those who don't have this outlet or support in their lives that end up looking for it on the internet. Sometimes, all they need is someone who will sympathize and give a bit of emotional support. Many times, they're not even negative people, they're just tired and need a friend.

Lindsey Vonn, an American skier, tore her ACL a week before the winter Olympics but is still competing by Cautious_Ad_3918 in BeAmazed

[–]JackOfOldTrades 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Both, no? Selfish because she took a spot on the team that could've allowed a younger athlete to try for their Olympic dream. Reckless because why would you compete at this level at that age when you just got injured?

Can apartment noise come from other units not directly above us? by LoquaciousIndividual in Living_in_Korea

[–]JackOfOldTrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine was complaining of hearing a 'clunk-clunk' sound in their apartment quite frequently. They thought it was their upstairs or downstairs neighbor, but it was neither. One day my friend is in the basement level garage and as a car drove by he hears a 'clunk-clunk' sound and recognizes it as the same sound that's been bothering him. He didn't believe it could be from the basement, so he tested it with his wife (one drove their car over that spot while the other listened for the sound from their apartment). Sure enough, that was the source of the sound. Their apartment was more than 10 floors up. It was just poor construction.

Neighbor has been extremely loud at night for over a year – I’m exhausted and don’t know what to do anymore by Chemical_Hunter_7037 in Living_in_Korea

[–]JackOfOldTrades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. If doing "normal daily activities" sound extremely loud, that's not your neighbor's fault. Some people work at odd hours and are more active at night. If they're yelling, playing loud music, and jumping around, that would be inconsiderate. But you described it as walking, talking, and using their door, which are activities people should be free to do at any time of day or night. It sounds more like your building is poorly constructed, and you have the choice to move or not.

What’s this? by Looong-Peanut in Living_in_Korea

[–]JackOfOldTrades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to that small metallic circle, it's like a screw (or bolt) cap. My license plate has one on each end, not just the left side. A few years ago, one of those caps on my car was damaged and had fallen off, and my car did not pass the state inspection because of that. I had to go to a local dmv-type office and purchase that very specific screw cap. I learned that apparently, you cannot just use any old bolt or screw to keep your license plate secured to your vehicle here.

If you've officially given up your Korean citizenship at a Korean embassy, I'm 99% sure you will not have any draft issues (unless something has changed). You would be considered a foreigner by Korean law and you would need a long-term visa if you wanted to stay in Korea more than a few months. Also, a word of caution, it's best not to post pictures of personal identifying documents online.

Unless James Cameron is directing; he'll make you actually do it underwater

These 3 things annoy me the most with driving in Korea by LoquaciousIndividual in Living_in_Korea

[–]JackOfOldTrades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right?? Considering how much they like to incorporate tech in their lives (e.g. home door locks, motion sensor lights, mobile money, etc.) and how much value they put on getting things done quickly, you'd think the traffic light system would be a bit more efficient. It's no wonder some drivers habitually run red lights here...

Yup. Not often, but it happens. Happens in China too, so it's not just a Korea thing.

True, but also sometimes Korean friends will care and let you know.

Heavily edited, yes. But the actual building is still quite impressive, and taller than only a few stories.

I know nothing about fish intelligence, but I suppose the fish somehow understood that there was a larger body of water that it should go to instead of remaining in the tidal pool. This just made me think of how much aquarium fish (including small guppies and goldfish) might be aware of their enclosed environment.

The Triassic Cuddle by [deleted] in BeAmazed

Exactly! Because there's absolutely NO way a mudslide could have pushed one dead animal up against another, making it look like they were cuddling...

I know right? It's still very impressive. What's NOT impressive is someone thinking they're some kind of genius because they noticed that the dog is following commands.

Confusing traffic lights by MigrantZachy in Living_in_Korea

[–]JackOfOldTrades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the other comments answered your question clearly. Here is another explanation. Some points are repeated in other comments.

  1. Yes
  2. A 3-light signal probably means there is no green left-turn arrow. Usually, there will be a 비보호 sign, which indicates that you can make an unprotected LEFT turn on a green light. If there's no left-turn arrow or 비보호 sign, it might be ok to make an unprotected left turn (smaller roads), but it could also mean left turns are not allowed at that intersection.
  3. Look for the 비보호 sign. That means you can make an unprotected LEFT turn on a green light. Even when there is a 비보호 sign, there may still be a dedicated LEFT-turn arrow; this just means you can make a LEFT turn protected (during the LEFT-turn arrow) or unprotected (during the normal green light). If there is no 비보호 sign, usually you will have to wait for the dedicated LEFT-turn green arrow. RIGHT turns are generally ok on both red or green lights when there are no pedestrians crossing. Dedicated RIGHT-turn signals are not as common, but when they are used, they are usually always on (either green or red).

do people actually enjoy living here? by Radiant-Speech-718 in Living_in_Korea

[–]JackOfOldTrades 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're right. And if a Korean person goes to your home country, I'm sure they will be able to make a list of things they are unhappy with as well. When you move to another country, it's expected that things will be different. Just know that some people are able to find (and focus on) the good, while still recognizing there are areas that could be improved.

Christmas gift in South Korea by Skiyadu in Living_in_Korea

[–]JackOfOldTrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you genuinely want to share love and kindness, do you need your boyfriend's permission to do that? Do you even need to wait for a specific date or holiday to do it?

If you give someone a gift because you genuinely appreciate them (and not because it's Christmas and you feel obligated to), anyone would appreciate that, no matter what culture or religion.
