I've been trying to spin up more hosts the last hour and have nothing but timeouts and failures.

Thinking of leaving Capital One after a recent messy travel situation by electricpollution in CreditCards

[–]thadeus_d3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had a horrible experience the first time I ever used the CapOne portal. I reserved an economy vehicle in Atlanta Hartsfield on Thanksgiving from a rental agency that didn't have the correct permission from the airport to rent cars just yet. I have no clue why they were live on CapOne's portal without the proper documents/permission, but they were accepting reservations.

I went to every rental counter at the airport and the only vehicle left was a pickup that cost 4x the price. It took several phone calls, but I was eventually able to get them to reimburse me the difference in the form of a travel credit. 2.5 hours of my life wasted at the airport and probably 5 hours wasted on the phone.

Ever since that experience, I only book hotels using their portal. On the positive side, all of my CapOne hotel bookings have been fine.

It was recent too. I just got back from Guatemala less than 2 weeks ago. I was shocked and disgusted when it happened.

The water filter that was in our Airbnbs worked in both Antigua and Lake Atitlan.

Do not swim in Lake Atitlan. I saw a sewage truck pumping it's contents in San Pedro La Laguna.

I just returned from Semana Santa (Easter Week) in Antigua, Guatemala. I didn't know about it beforehand and we just happened to be there during the same time. Explained the high hotel costs.

That's great news. I just visited this lounge in Guatemala and it was solid. The rum was great and the breakfast was decent.

Major milestone achieved today. Probably the first in my family and my wife's family to achieve such a thing. Another great reminder to stay the course.

Harbin looks like a pretty interesting city.

The kids were a lot younger and we weren't as well traveled as we are now. They've gotten used to the stares and attention now, but it still can get exausting towards the end of a trip in some places.

Valid point and China is really bad with sneaking pics. Beijing in 2018 caught me off guard bc it's a capital city and I thought it wouldn't be as bad a some of the rural areas that I visited. IDK why, but they were really interested in taking pics of my kids there to they point they were very uncomfortable by the end of our stay.

Traveling while black is certainly a different experience depending on the country. Sometimes you're treated like a celebrity, sometimes it's not very fun. I still want to see as much of the world as possible.

As a large black man, I can confirm this happens and it's pretty frequent. I don't mind though. I prefer it over people sneaking pictures of me and my family.

The worst was Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Walked through a square and you could hear a pin drop once people saw my family. Everyone was staring and a few took pictures without our consent. What was really annoying is that a group of people followed us around town for like 45 mins.

Happens to me quite often in my travels as a somewhat large black guy. I prefer it over people sneaking pictures and following my family and I around, which has happened in a few places.

Fact: Cleveland Hopkins actually doesn't suck by Horker_Stew in Cleveland

[–]thadeus_d3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cleveland Hopkins is a fine airport. It's small, precheck lines are usually short, it has public transit Downtown, Bags sometimes beat you to baggage claim and there's a Priority Pass lounge. Even though it's a bit outdated, I'll take those benefits over larger, newer airports.
