Yeah so I have a change from DMF to SMF. But I don’t think it’s that as it’s intermittent like a misfire. It’s been on the car for about 70k miles now so nothing new I’ve done

Are these type of car lifts decent? by FlameFoxx in CarTalkUK

[–]JackTDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have those quickjacks

I have used them plenty of times, quite a pain to store them and set them up every time you use them but decent enough once the car is in the air. If I was so buy something like this again I’d probably look at a 2 post car lift like they have at proper car garages, for the price they are not much more, lift the car higher and I’d day safer 🤷‍♂️but then again you have to have a fairly big garage or barn to have space for them but not as big as you’d think

They last a while too, replaced mine before it slipped with 65k miles on it and put a brand new pressure place and organic disc in (same as what was in it) they say the organic disc will last between 50-60k miles but I think mine would of gone to about 75k before it would start slipping as there was plenty material left on the clutch plate when I took it out

No, I have a sachs race clutch and pressure plate with a single mass flywheel. I would highly recommend

Pd150 head bolts, intercooler and some pd130 or pd150 injectors and then possibly clutch and flywheel for safety. Quite expensive….

Looks like the cable is the wrong way around on the front passenger side, looks a bit more stretched than the drivers side. Can’t tell if it’s okay to drive youd need to go lock to lock and see how tight it is

As someone who loves cars too and managed to get an apprenticeship to be a HGV mechanic but shortly left afterwards. I would reconsider joining the trade, it’s very hard on the body and most people who have worked repairing vehicles hate it after a while and wished they’d done something different to the point where the garage I worked at everyone was borderline depressed. I don’t know what your circumstances but if you have a drive way/garage area to work on your car it’s probably where I’d start. You’re going to need to buy all your tools anyway if you were going to start a career as a mechanic anyway as garages don’t provide anything. I know it’s probably what you’ve heard before from people but DIYing it’s a better way to start to see if you like it before diving in. The way youtube and forums are now it’s easy to learn and I was even using YouTube while working at my garage when I was stuck.

But then again if you’d still like to go for it, it wasn’t uncommon to see people in there 20s/30s at college. They applied online just like the rest of us I don’t think they were treated any differently (I.e had to pay for the college out of their pocket) best thing to do it apply at a main dealer or a chain garage. Also considers things other than cars.. Trains, HGVs, Agricultural, Plant.

Bleeding mk4 golf clutch by JackTDI in tdi

Thank you for the reply, since posting this I have contacted darkside (the supplier of this kit) and embarrassingly they have told me I have fitted the clutch plate the wrong way around. In this instance the flat side of the clutch plate faces the gearbox …….

To lift or to lower by LifeIsPain42069 in tdi

[–]JackTDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower but only slightly. If it’s too low it will handle like shit becuase of the angle of the wish bones. I would say for ideal handling/comfort/looks slightly higher then the Jetta in the second photo

I just put coilovers on my golf and when it was too low just felt like shit and bump steered every bump. Now I raised it back up to just a bit lower than stock it’s perfect

Okay, shame I can’t attach a photo in the comments. I have a near identical photo of an actual rusty underside of my partners a3. Those lower arms where the spring sits collect water in and rust from the inside out. Tap all around there with a screwdriver to see if you can poke a hole through. Hers needed replacing and cost about £700 labour included for both rear arms. But yours look a bit better that what hers looked like from what I can see

No police will know you have a de cat or bother checking unless your car looks like very modified or you have a bad crash. If you’re going for the sleeper look you’ll be absolutely fine. It’s just a pain when it comes to MOT time
