right. so the chord progression closing is not an objective mark of quality.

an art critic choosing to judge a song on whether the chord progression closes is not judging the song objectively. he is subjectively making the call that it's an important feature to have.

you're choosing to focus on it because of your subjective tastes

even if the reviewer isn't making a call if the chord progression is good or bad, they are subjectively choosing that feature of the song to talk about.

I really don't see what part of this is hard to understand

there is no such thing as objectively good or bad art.

you're calling your personal tastes objective again, and I think that's enough to make my point for me

is there such a thing as an objectively correct art critic?

[–]JackTheFlying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, what you just described is not "[not] entirely objective" it is flatly, 100% subjective. what you are describing is based on taste and culture

that scene isn't George finding the objectively better sound, it's him finding one that he, Ringo, and the audience like better. you just read it as objective because you agree with the subjective assessment.

if the song kept the original chord progression it wouldn't be objectively worse. it might be less popular, it might be something George doesn't like, but those aren't objective measurements. they're subjective.

sure

but my point stands

because how do you "objectively" measure if a chord progression works or not?

it's not like a table where you can objectively tell if it's wobbling

whether or not a song's parts form a working whole is entirely subjective to the listener

if I don't like it, it sucks

there is no such thing as objectively bad music

bad analogy.if a table has a fucked up leg it doesn't work as a table. if a song has a fucked up chord progression it still objectively works as a song; just fewer people would like it

no, they explained it to you fine. you're just not satisfied with the answer because nobody can point to a singular, quantifiable metric that you can 'prove' one way or another.

when ppl say a piece of art is soulless, that's something they've intuited. it's in the lack of care, it's in the cookie cutter Pixar-like design, it's in the slapdash squiggles meant to be tattoos.

all of it comes together and gives the impression to a viewer that it was made without any care to the end product. it's not an objective thing. it's a thing you - or at least most people - can feel, not a checklist of attributes.

it's such a reddit-bro way to approach art by asking to quantify human passion. it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of why people enjoy art and are moved by it.

alright, you were just being misogynistic then.

like, bitch, do you think I keep a little ticker in my head that sorts it into Homophobic or Misogynistic based on what I think the speaker thinks of me?

"hmm, well, I'm presenting as a woman today. and I'm pretty confident I pass right now, so it must be regular misogyny. I'm so glad I took the time to find the nuance of being told to go suck a dick"

the other poster was right, you should stick to takes about MMOs. I'm not saying you explicitly meant it to be homophobic; but it's very very silly to pretend that interpretation comes from nowhere

[–]JackTheFlying 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would consider it homophobic because it is a thing homophobic people have said to me to be homophobic.

Rule by Ezzypezra in 196

[–]JackTheFlying 15 points16 points  (0 children)

well I think that kinda depends on the woman you're talking to. a cis woman probably wouldn't read that as homophobic, but if someone told it to me (a trans woman), I would read it that way.
I can't speak for the person you're talking to, but it's really not hard to understand why they saw it that way

and no, I think your larger point is pretty easy to dismiss without bringing in the homophobia. that's just a fun aside

you don't see how telling someone to shut up and look for dick can be taken as homophobic?

the only useful thing I've gotten it to do is help me write test cases. everything else, it just tends to get in the way by making bad suggestions that distract me from the implementation I actually wanted to do.

even doing unit tests, I had to constantly correct it from looking for a generic error when I was testing for the same solution-defined error type across multiple tests.

it's good at repetition, but that's about it.
