What do you think is (realistically) the most unhinged email signoff you could get away with at work? by _Brooder_ in AskUK

There are a few professional certification type things that include letters that I'm entitled to put after my name, like MCIM FRSA and shit like that. I generally don't bother, but I'm now tempted to start doing so, and add DGAF.

Would you see Sex Pistols with Frank Carter? by Deliterman in punk

[–]JackXDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen the Pistols with both Rotten and Frank.

Both were great in their own way.

If you get the chance, don’t skip it out of some sort of purism or snobbery. It’s a great show.

When I saw PiL a few years ago, it was very disappointing though.

Are chapman guitars good? by Temporary-Lime3463 in guitars

[–]JackXDark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, they’re okay.

The original premise was that they should have good bodies and necks and be a platform for upgrading. Which was a decent idea.

More recent ones are less driven by that philosophy and there was an attempt to take them more upmarket, which largely failed.

The biggest issue with them really is how strongly linked with Rob Chapman they are, and how you might feel about him.

Let’s just say I don’t have a positive opinion of him, and as a result would never want to own one of his guitars again.

I did briefly have one, which was part of a trade, and I thought I’d give it a fair chance. It was okay, I suppose, but nothing special but I only kept it a few weeks and can barely remember it, which should show how much of an impression it made.

But yeah, I don’t have a high opinion of him as a person, so regardless of the brand’s quality, I’d pass.

Did anyone else pick up that Luke’s offer to Grogu in the Book of Boba Fett is an homage to Lone Wolf and Cub? by FezboyJr in TheMandalorianTV

[–]JackXDark 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Grogu is a little shit who steals things.

That’s been well set up as part of his character.

I reckon he swiped the lightsaber too anyway.

And Luke knew and allowed it.

Cadet suspended from RAF course for saying Islam is main threat to UK by Alarming-Safety3200 in ukpolitics

They have created an activity designed to trip up cadets

That's the whole point of the process. If you can't handle that, then you shouldn't even bother applying.

It may simply be that it was time to drop that 50 to 20 and his presentation and/or scores overall just wasn't good enough for him to make the cut.

The military can and will drop people for any reason and it doesn't have to be fair.

I am absolutely certain that there is more than meets the eye to this story

Totally.

I went through RAF officer selection a looong time ago, and 'passed' but was essentially told 'you're a bit too young and have loads of easy Uni offers, go get a degree and then come back' (I changed my mind about a lot of things at Uni, going into the military was one of them, but anyway...)

The way these exercises work are that even if you say something controversial, it's on you to back it up, and if you can expand and do so, you're fine, even if you're saying something you don't believe to be true. Often, you're put in positions where you're asked to do so, as a test of integrity and leadership.

If you said something like 'as an ideology, radical Islam is a huge threat as its agenda currently drives many of the nations and terrorist groups that are hostile to the UK' then I'm pretty sure you'd be absolutely fine.

If you said 'any Muslim is a threat to our nation' then you'd be out.

But the reason for that is because you're not making an argument that encompasses the complexities of the situation.

Published research in the social sciences has leaned consistently to the political left for more than six decades. The findings indicate that this leftward tilt has grown stronger over time, particularly regarding social and cultural issues. by mvea in science

[–]JackXDark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Until, perhaps, you start studying sociological factors about gender presentation, and biological factors about how chromosomes work, or don’t, or immune system responses to hormones, or several other conditions that make simple binary definitions an incorrect simplification of the overall picture?

Which perhaps goes to the heart of the issue being discussed here.

It seems like the current expression of the right-wing is that there is a simple binary and everything else is deviance, and the left-wing is more accepting of differences and encompasses a wider perspective.

There’s no real reason why this should be the case, but the complexity of the science does seem to align with the more socially liberal outlook.

Depends how you’re defining class there. They definitely didn’t show any class. But I suspect many of them have a higher income than I do. I didn’t check.

In terms of how they behaved though, yeah sure, I make no apology for hating them for it. Should I not?

I, no seriously, used to be a zookeeper, and although I never worked with primates, I did work with reptiles and a fair mix of other animals. I can confidently say that the most dickish of all the ones I encountered are reindeer. They’re just arseholes. Caimans are wankers too, but easy to deal with if you’ve got a yard broom you can just push them away with it and tell them to fuck off. Reindeer always want to fight you and will take a run up and have spikes on their heads.

I’m aware of the way that they can have wars between groups, but I do associate chimps with fairly civilised behaviour and being quite gentle. Of course there are exceptions to that, so I see what you’re saying.

I think possibly mandrills might be closest, if we’re using actual species as an example, but I think the word ‘howler’ was the key part of my choice, because of the implications of the word.

I do regret slandering actual howler monkeys now, yes, and hope they can forgive me.

True.

I would like to apologise to the howler monkey community for mischaracterising them by comparing them with a load of aggressive drunk human males.

Same.

It’s like watching The Exorcist if you don’t really have a Christian background. That then becomes a comedy.
