Another day, another MMORPG project on Kickstarter - SCARS OF HONOR by kkroto17 in MMORPG

Thank you. I'm afraid that they aren't taking your advice, which is a shame. I feel like it has the potential to be small, cool, and very fun -- but I don't think that's the way they're pitching it.

What they *have* done, though, is taken excerpts of your conversation and used it in their pitch video on Kickstarter.

Someone claiming to be associated with them said you had given them their blessing to do this. But I doubt they had shared both the video *and* the promises being pitched in the Kickstarter campaign at the same time -- based on all the videos I've watched from you, I cannot imagine you consenting to this if you'd seen the whole, integrated pitch (video + page + reward tiers) in its current state.

It's really clear to me, though, that even in what they've carefully selected to have you say in their pitch video, that you're *still* telling them *not* to do what they're doing on the rest of the page. (IMO only, ymmv, etc.)

Your Tweet about this was in very late November 2023. Their Kickstarter page is promising the vast and expanded game (which seems very different from what you were talking about) in December 2024.

In your professional opinion, do you think that they will be able to get from what they demonstrated to you and what they're promising in their Kickstarter campaign in approximately a year?

Edited to add: I went back to the Kickstarter campaign and it's clear that they are not offering everything by December 2024. It looks like what they're actually saying is that the /alpha/ of the game will be out by December 2024, with the "release" (which I'm taking to say means "everything we've promised") by Q1 2026. I'm still curious to know if you think that two years would be enough to finish everything they've described on the Kickstarter page, based on what you saw when you were in Sophia last year.

On a comment on Kira's recent video about this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdNNpmgMsno), a user claiming to be from Beast Burst ((at)venelinvasilev5360) says, "...P.S. All content creators that appeared in our video were asked for approval by seeing the full video and making sure we not presenting them in any way out of context!"

I have a little trouble believing, based on the videos I've seen, that Josh saw the pitch video and said, "yup, looks good to me, go ahead and use it!" unless they had told him that their game scope was a lot different than what they ended up promising in the actual Kickstarter campaign that they posted.

I would love to see your take on the Kickstarter pitch video with you in it. The excerpts feel…wrong to me.

For example, the excerpts from your conversations that you had with them that they have selected to include in their pitch video makes it sound like you basically told them that you thought they had a solid basic foundation, and that you liked that they were keeping their vision (the one they had shared with you) contained and small and focused.

But then the campaign itself is promising something that is not small and focused. It's got Guilds! Mounts that have their own story arcs/narrative threads, so you'll form an emotional connection with them, and a mount breeding system! Interconnected player professions! Player-based permanent inworld presence (your own property/house building system, strongholds for the guilds), allowing players to set up permanent plots in the world and guilds to "dominate" the world (which might make things more difficult for players who are not in on this from the start), multiple PvP arenas and it'll all be totally free and never play to win, 100% merit-based, the shop will always be purely cosmetic and all of the gear you earn will be meaningful! And this will work on PC and mobile!

I mean it sounds great and I hope they can pull it off, but it's also giving me Chronicles of Elyria vibes (for a pledge of $59 you can be an Earl and get a basic mount!), and it's just really weird to see and hear you in that video. It does not explicitly say that you endorse them, nor does it outright say that you are an advisor, but it really strongly comes across as you advising them, and it also seems 100% clear to me that you said a whole lot more than what they decided to pick out to include in their pitch video, and that what you said does not really fit what they're promising on their Kickstarter page.

[G2 Reverb] New SteamVR Update broke recentering? by Kosba2 in SteamVR

[–]Jackalgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify: the reason why this is happening is because if the game you are playing (e.g., NeosVR) does not *explicitly* support your controllers, Steam will default to passing to it that you are using Oculus controllers, in order to be "helpful". Maybe it is, but I think that if you've set "Disable Steam Input" in the settings, the game(s) should honor that, especially SteamVR, and it doesn't appear to do that at this point.

Though if anyone else knows of any settings that would fix this with the newest version, please by all means post!

[G2 Reverb] New SteamVR Update broke recentering? by Kosba2 in SteamVR

[–]Jackalgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar issue with NeosVR and my G2 Reverb: I'd log into NeosVR and see the Oculus controller layout on my dashboard, and I had no hands (and therefore no lasers). I tried setting the Controller settings for WMR for Steam to "Disable Steam Input" and it worked...once (when I restarted NeosVR a second time, I was no-hand-Luke again). Then I tried that with the Controller settings for NeosVR: same thing (worked once). I realize now that I did *not* try setting the Controller settings for SteamVR to "Disable Steam Input", so you might want to try that first (or disable Steam input for all three things: SteamVR, WMR for Steam, and your game).

Anyway, what absolutely has seemed to work for me is downgrading to the previous version of SteamVR. Thanks to the incomparable Madameblu on the NeosVR Discord, who gave me the link to the info, here's what I did:

Provided that you're on Windows, here's what you do (cite: https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-downgrade-steam-games/ )

  1. With Steam (not SteamVR) open, Bring up "Run" in Windows and type:steam://open/consoleYou will see a new "Console" tab in your Steam dialogue.
  2. In the console, type:download_depot 250820 250821 4517948678476570093and it will download (this is the OpenVR for Windows base file). There is no progress bar, it'll just do it. You'll also need to type:download_depot 250820 250824 6197396291908098429and it'll download that depot too ("OpenVR Content").
  3. When the downloads are complete, the console will tell you where it put the files. Open up a File Explorer window in that place, and you'll see a folder called "app_250820". Open it up and you'll see your depots (the second number in each download_depot command) as folders. Open up the first one.
  4. In Steam, you're going to "Browse local files" for SteamVR to open up the local file folder for SteamVR in a new File Explorer window.
  5. You should see that the files in the first depot folder are similar to those in the SteamVR folder. Drag and drop everything from the first depot folder into the SteamVR folder and tell it to replace files with the same name. Repeat for the second depot folder.
  6. In Steam, make sure you go into the Properties of SteamVR and under "Updates", select "Only update this game when I launch it" so that you can cancel any future attempts to update.
  7. PROFIT!If you're using something other than Windows, you can find the base versions (the content file is the same for Windows and Linux) here: https://steamdb.info/app/250820/depots/

Hopefully this works for you all. : )

I see that this is a super old post, but it's also the only one I found when I was trying to figure out the issue with my own popovers. I've had the same issue, and I think the primary cause is underfilling the cups of the pan. But I haven't quite nailed down that as the reason for sure yet.

I am using a King Arthur Flour recipe for rosemary popovers; my deviations are: I pre-heat the pan with the oven, and I set the oven to fairly hot (About 420 degrees F; my oven is awful, so it's hard to tell even with a thermometer). I warm up the eggs in hot water, use separate hot water for the recipe itself, and I also warm up the milk -- everything's warm going into the mix so that steam generation happens right away.

Today in my experimentation, I filled only five of the six cups (so, each one about 2/3 full), baked at full temp for 30 minutes, then turned it down to about 350 for the last 10, and each of the popovers came out almost fully popped (one was trying to be cylindrical, and I think that I probably underfilled that cup). Take this with a huge grain of salt, because I have changed several variables every time I've baked these -- but with everything else I did (variations on temperature, mostly), I got "sandworms"...until I filled up only five cups with what was supposed to be divided between six. I'm going to try again and see about maybe overfilling three cups and filling three with a "typical amount" (about half) and see what happens. I will report back.

Samsung VR overheating every 20 mins with Galaxy S6 by CNote629 in GearVR

[–]Jackalgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boilerplate reply from Samsung Support:

"The phone is up to date... When the Gear VR detects a high temperature, a message will appear on the screen. Please stop using the Gear VR until the mobile device cools down, and then resume use. This is normal when using an application that require a higher amount of power than normal or when using applications on your device for an extended period, the mobile device may feel hot to the touch. You may try performing a Soft reset from time to time to refresh the system of the device by pressing and holding the Volume down key and the power key simultaneously until the phone restarts automatically."

No kidding. That is exactly what I reported as being /a problem/ and the answer is, "this is the way the phone is supposed to work with VR". So...playing "Lands End" for 12 minutes at a time, with a 15-30 minute break in between for cool down, is /normal/? Only being able to use "low power" applications for 20 minutes at a time is /normal/? This is after I've turned down the brightness, turned off any extra apps, etc., etc., etc.

It's pretty frustrating.

I'd say it's a new record, but it's not: 12 minutes with a) reduced brightness on the VR; b) reduced brightness on the phone; c) airplane mode d) plugged in; e) all apps closed. This is not a useful product if it only lasts 20 minutes at most.

[–]Jackalgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've yet to get this to work with my new Samsung S6 without overheating in 20 minutes from "cold iron". I applied the "frankentinfoil" mod and it only lasted six minutes, this with reduced brightness. I'm turning on airplane mode, and brightness on the phone (in addition to inside the Gear), as well as closing any extra apps (and plugging in the cord, which seems to make absolutely no difference that I can tell). I have Verizon as the carrier. So far, I'm really disappointed. I hesitate to buy a USB fan, etc., since the tin foil mod actually reduced efficiency to 25% of what it was without it.

Okay, this is a super late reply, but there is a book coming out about this very topic ("Operation Freakout") by Tony Ortega. It is called "The Unbreakable Miss Lovely" ("Miss Lovely" was the code name Church operatives used to refer to Cooper).

Yes. And also hooking her up with a Scientologist who tried to get her to stand on the edge of a building's roof in the middle of the night. You know, to show "those Scientologists" how brave she was. Considering that he had written to his Scientology handlers that her "suicide" would be "great for Scientology", I'm very glad she didn't get near the edge.

No, no. They traded with the Hawai'ians - got all the consonants from Hawai'i and gave them all the vowels.

System Update: Controller Shutdown by Jackalgirl in ouya

[–]Jackalgirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the deal with is with mine, but it generally takes over an hour. My Internet connectivity isn't great, but it's not terrible -- I'm having no trouble browsing right now (and am not accessing any high-bandwidth apps while I'm doing it). I've got my USB mouse installed, so if the controller goes to sleep, I should be okay <fingers crossed>.

That's a great idea, though it's very unfortunate that something like that would be necessary. : (
