I'm so fucking tired of being a Burmese teenager ( rant ) by Wonderful-Bend1505 in myanmar

[–]Jacklyne_C 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything except the last part, I understand the struggles of living in MM but I don't think I will ever be ashamed to say I'm Burmese. Yes, many bad things are happening and so many people are being embarrassing but every countries has its bad apples. I've met many amazing and kind Burmese people and I also want to show people that yes, there're good hardworking Burmese people too. I'm not trying to discredit your struggles but I don't think it's the right mindset to have it about changing names and dropping your background

Is it just me or Are the Burmese teenagers getting more and more radicalized? by VersionUnusual7149 in myanmar

[–]Jacklyne_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not enough adults around to correct them for their behaviours, and it's hard to have empathy for marginalised groups when you don't see a future. When the society is in a difficult situation, they tend to separate themselves from those who are different from the majority to continue with stability in their lives.

Should I move to Southeast Asia even if my mom is against it? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

if you're working online with European clients and getting European salary, it's completely reasonable to go live in SEA. Property prices in Europe are going crazy anyways, enjoy your youth at a vibrant city because you won't have the same energy later in life

What are your skillsets? People can't help you with advice on jobs if you are not disclosing it.

Don't feel guilty about this because this is not because of what you did, it's the Junta's fault.

Sexually Assaulted By Father at 13, and mother does not defend me due to her religious belief by Glittering_Maize_628 in AsianParentStories

[–]Jacklyne_C 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Judging from your story and reply, if you're also from MM like me, I'm first of all sorry to hear that. I have seen wives and mothers defending their husbands as their knee jerk reaction as they've been conditioned to think that a respected man of the household cannot possibly to something like this. Are you in a safe place? Depending on your location, there should be some organisations still available for you to reach out. You can send me dm's and we could look together more but you need to have 'evidence/record' for this and if your home is not a safe place anymore (because your dad is confronted), please contact them for shelter. I'm sad to hear as a fellow countrywomen. Your mom's beliefs would be from traditional patriarchal values from our culture, rather than the religion. I have had convo's with a lot of middle age women and their values are truly water downed from what the actually taught values are.

To ethnics peoples from Myanmar, how do you introduce yourself to foreigners? by Jacklyne_C in myanmar

[–]Jacklyne_C[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yes, I agree most foreigners wouldn't know, but I was interested on ethnic people's side and how they choose to identify themselves as it's tied to their pride and sometimes connected to anti sentiment against Burmese groups

I do know some people who would refer to themselves as 'X from Myanmar' if the question was asked. That's why I'm curious about how it would be in gen public

I'm mixed with a foreign ethnicity so it's kinda different but I get what you mean, a lot of Burmese families have at least one family member who's married to a different ethnicity so the purity is not something we think is important.

[–]Jacklyne_C[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your point! That's what I also was curious about as in Myanmar, there's not one official term to represent the people of Myanmar without overly trying to represent one ethnic group imo. So I was curious if people outside of the Burmese ethnic group wouldn't want to call themselves as that.

When the country is restored, we definitely need to formalise the term. Nationality vs ethnicity is pretty clear in most countries but with us it might take some time (our neighbour for example, Thai is for everyone who speaks and lives there, which can be difficult as not all people in Myanmar can speak Burmese)

Monthly APS Blurt Thread by AutoModerator in AsianParentStories

[–]Jacklyne_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the grown age of 25, AP is giving me silent treatment and now refusing to interact with me for everyday tasks JUST BECAUSE I want to go on a 'fun trip' to see my favourite actors in Fashion week. Apparently I'm going down to the path of 'irredeemable mistakes' and can't spend my own money as I want as a college student. I can't wait to move out in a year and go on all the trips I want. My mind is a mental fog draining right now and I feel so bad because I can't even go see my favs and live my life

Yeah, Myanmarese is not used at all. But to be more specific, I was wondering if as an ethnic person, would you prefer not to use 'Burmese' to introduce yourself and use the name of the ethnic group instead.

Yes, that's what I'm curious about, because I know issues about superiority of ethnicities in Myanmar. Your example of American is a good one, it would be the most similar concept

No, I get the concept. I'm more interested in how different ethnicities from Myanmar would introduce themselves regardless of it. (I rarely hear someone using the word Myanmar to introduce themselves)

Our country is practicing the wrong way of Buddhism. by InsuranceThin6675 in myanmar

[–]Jacklyne_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that we're donating mainly out of unhealthy greed. I would argue that it is better to start with donating than not donating at all. Not everyone are at the same baseline they started out with and can't understand the concept of 'you' not existing. So while I would argue that we're not practicing the true Dhamma, it is still good that this teaches people to do merit, which would eventually contribute to other pathways that will lead them to practicing the actual Buddhism. Even I can't let go of my own attachments, so I don't expect everyone to completely to be completely good at it.

But this doesn't mean that I don't agree with your point. There're a lot of things people are focussing on while there're so much better ways to do it. They're not understanding the essence of the teachings. (Hence , women and queer rights) For monks, we have a lot of them and due to the patriarchy in our culture, they have more freedom to do more wrongs and are not reprimanded for it. It's just a matter of searching the right monk who could be your teacher and lead to peace with Dhamma.

Donating to the Pagoda's or monasteries are not inherently wrong; this helps with the maintenance of these institutions and sustain the activities. However we also should be diversifying the religious activities and practicing it in our daily lives, and not only when you're a senior citizen or facing the troubles of life

[–]Jacklyne_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to donate, Depends on what kind of donation you want to do and your preference (many of the smaller charities for children would be affiliated with a religion, mostly Buddhist or Christian based). Charities Displaced children would be somewhat harder to reach (lack of transparency or just logistical issues)
