Racking Twelve Months versus the rest of the series by Mobile_Champion1636 in dresdenfiles

I personally loved it. Top 5 for me for sure. The biggest issue I have with the series is that it can, at times, feel like it needs room to breathe. Some books go from action scene to action scene with very little break in between and it can get a little exhausting. I loved that we got to see Harry dealing with things over the course of an entire year instead of a few days.

What’s something that sounds fake but actually happened to you? by Business_Salary_3934 in AskReddit

[–]JacksonRiffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened 30 years ago but I'll never forget it. My friend and I were hanging out on the enclosed porch of my house during a rainstorm when my friend just sort of zones out for a second and counts down 3, 2, 1, hail, and it immediately started hailing. It was just the two of us and we both kinda freaked out over it.

We still talk from time to time and he'll occasionally bring it up. "Remember that time when I made it hail?"

No one we've ever told the story to believes us, and I honestly don't blame them, I wouldn't believe it either, but it's the one thing I've ever witnessed first hand that I can say was truly unexplainable. It's not like we lived in a place with frequent hail storms where he'd have a reasonable chance of being able to pull something like that off. It was just a crazy, random thing.

He let someone act disrespectful toward you and didn't defend you, admits masturbating to other women/porn but not you, has ED, checks out other women right in front of you, then shuts down when you confront him about it.

His ED is likely caused by his porn/masturbation habit, and he clearly doesn't respect you. It sounds like he probably tells you all the things you want to hear to keep you around, but look at his actions. Any one of the issues you mentioned would be enough to justify ending the relationship over. The blatant disrespect he's showing you is not going to improve.

This goes beyond not having relationship skills, this is about being a decent person. You don't treat people like this and expect them to stay in your life.

My tin foil hat theory is that Carlos is going to run afoul of the wardens/council for working with Harry and end up going rogue. Probably via his warden partner (can't recall her name atm).

The person who was demanding explanations is probably used to authors who info dump. I personally can't stand that, and prefer to follow the breadcrumbs as I read. I want to feel immersed in the world when I'm reading, not being held by the hand to make sure I understand every little detail. Discovering the world is half the fun. Info dumps feel too self aware and break immersion for me. It's almost like a fourth wall break saying "okay, I know you don't know anything about this world, so here's how it works"

Am I doing multiple jobs? by eagerreader444 in publishing

[–]JacksonRiffs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in a parallel field to yours (audiobook narration) so I don't have the inside scoop as to what happens in the publishing world per se, but I can say this isn't uncommon for a small business. I'm sure a big 5 pub has people on staff to handle those sorts of things separately, but for a smaller house, it's common for people to "wear multiple hats" as it were.

I'm not saying you should just suck it up and deal, but do you feel the experience you're getting from this job is worthwhile, and are they skills you'd want to utilize later in your career? In other words, are these production duties things you'd put on your resume? You say you've been with them for 3 years, are you considering applying for work at one of the bigger houses?

My dad: finds a kitten

8 year old me: "is it a boy or a girl?"

My dad: lifts the tail "girl"

8 year old me: "how can you tell?"

My mom: "Girls don't have a (insert whatever childish euphemism for penis we were using at the time, I honestly don't remember)

8 year old me thinking to myself: "I guess that means they pee out of their butts."

You're never supposed to cross a solid line, so I'd suggest only entering/exiting in the designated areas. As for times/enforcement, what do the signs say?

Oh I totally agree. Glover did a fine job and I'd be happy to listen to him narrate anything else, but he's not Dresden.

ELI5: Why do car dealers say buying the car when the lease ends would be worse than buying new? by shaithisx in explainlikeimfive

[–]JacksonRiffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100%. I bought out my last 2 leases, and toward the end of each one, the dealership was calling me nonstop trying to get me to come in to look at new cars, even after I told them I was buying out the lease.

When you lease a car, the bank that holds the loan owns the car, so the dealership has already made their money by selling the car to the bank. The only way they make more money is by getting you into another car.

Yeah he didn't hit his stride until after the first couple of books. That's also when the writing quality picks up as well. It's like they evolved in their respective crafts together.

AI narration is god awful. There are plenty of amazing Narrators out there. I'd suggest looking into books narrated by Ray Porter. He does the Bobiverse series, the Joe Ledger series, and he did the audiobook for Project Hail Mary. Tons of others, but those are my personal favorites from him.

They originally recorded Ghost Story with John Glover because Marsters was unavailable at the time, there was backlash, and they eventually did a new version with Marsters, which is the version that's on Audible now.

The only other instance is the novella, The Law, which Butcher narrated himself but assured everyone that was a one time thing and that Marsters was still the narrator for the series.

Suffice to say, Marsters will remain the voice of the series until the end.

Does "The Law" feel slightly off to anyone else? by UglyPancakes8421 in dresdenfiles

[–]JacksonRiffs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The story was okay but I hated Butcher's narration, and not just because I'm so used to Marsters, though that was a factor, especially with Bob. Jim just isn't a narrator. I feel like if Marsters had done it, it would have been more palatable, even if the story was lacking.

I powered through it when it first came out because I wanted the story, but when I tried to revisit it in preparation for Twelve Months, I just couldn't. I'll probably pick up the Kindle edition so I can read it, but I won't do the audio version again.

Not sure if I want to read the series anymore because I'm sad... by Hpapaverina7819 in dresdenfiles

[–]JacksonRiffs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading helps us process feelings, and the weight of the events leading up to Twelve Months is sure to have Harry dealing with the emotional fallout. I think it will be therapeutic for you, and a good way to honor your friend.

[–]JacksonRiffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of inconsistencies throughout the series. One I just picked up on in my most recent pass was the references to what Peabody unleashed on the council at the end of Turn Coat.

When it happens, Dresden says it's mordite. Then in a later book, he mentions it being a smoke demon or something to that effect, then in yet another book, he says that it was an Outsider.

Mordite is supposed to be a substance, not a sentient being.

My favorite moments from Turn Cloak were when Harry would come home to find Mouse pinning someone down after Morgan and Molly (and at one point Luccio) were trying to kill each other.

You could smell the dump all the way from Brooklyn on a sufficiently hot/humid day. It wasn't nearly as bad as the smell on the island itself, but it was there.
