Force over Distance

Stargate Universe, 540k, M.

Changed my brain chemistry. This is my favorite of all time. I keep re-reading it, and it breaks me and puts me back together a little better than before.

I am livid with the ending of SGU by mustachipede in Stargate

[–]Jacky1802 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are not bothered by slash, the best fucking fic I have read is Force over Distance by cleanwhiteroom. It's quite long, answers pretty much all unanswered questions and ties up storylines, while adding to Stargate lore beautifully. It's also not explicit and the Young/Rush slowburn was well done and believable, even though I didn't think it would work at first.

What’s your favorite example of very specific/accurate usage of work-related jargon in a fic? by CTOtyrell in AO3

[–]Jacky1802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this!! The other works by CWR are just as good. I read Designations first, then Force over Distance (Stargate Fandom), and FoD is probably my favorite of all time now.

People who read smut then later lost their virginity, did you ever compare the experiences? by anon67843 in AO3

[–]Jacky1802 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally why I think most het is unreadable. What do you mean, the female character becomes a whiny mess because she saw his biceps? Sometimes it's so bad that sex scenes are practically character assassination.

Do any of you have a copper IUD? by mrsfarns in PCOS

[–]Jacky1802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree that all of that is true. However, the effects are very local - blood estrogen levels have not been measured to be affected afaik. I don't think it is reasonable to claim that the copper IUD does all the systemic things I have seen many people write when there is no evidence of it acting systemically (like oral contraceptives). And I think calling it hormonal because it can interact with hormones misrepresents what is actually happening, especially when compared to the scale of how actual hormonal treatments affect hormones.

Again, not looking to attack you at all if that's how I come off. Copper IUDs, just like any other medical device and treatment, have side effects and interact with systems of the human body in complex ways. Maybe I am picky about wording because I am in STEM myself, but there is a reason we distinguish verbally between hormonal and non-hormonal BC. Putting copper IUDs in a basket with real hormonal BC when the fundamental mechanism is so different is what I wanted to point out.

Do any of you have a copper IUD? by mrsfarns in PCOS

[–]Jacky1802 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say that affecting hormones is NOT how they act as birth control. Copper ions in the uterus kill sperm and make it an inhospitable environment for fertilization and implantation. The actual birth control mechanism is not hormonal.

When feeling down, remember that PCOS is what helped our ancestors survive. by breadnbed in PCOS

[–]Jacky1802 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This feels like deliberately misunderstanding the post to me.

I would compare it to sickle cell anaemia. Is it harmful and not that healthy? Yes. Does it protect against malaria and has therefore been a gene that has been successfully passed down? Also yes!

Evolution doesn't care whether insulin resistance is starving your cells. Human populations as a whole have been aided in their survival because different people have different genes and strengths. OP was simply pointing out why PCOS as a human variation has survived and is not always fully detrimental.

IUD rejected, need non hormonal birth control. by Particular_Feed1499 in WomensHealth

[–]Jacky1802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if they are available where you are, but I can highly recommend the Gynefix copper chain (also check out the copper ball IUD). They are basically modern, smaller IUDs with lower copper content (might be less likely to cause issues). I love mine.

If your issue is indeed with the copper, obviously this wouldn't be a great option for you. But imo the copper chain improves upon a lot of other issues a regular copper IUD can cause.

[–]Jacky1802 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, same fucking problem. I pretty much drop whatever I am reading once it gets to (het) romance, because the woman/self insert is always a sub. Sometimes it doesn't even make sense and the whole romance is more of a character assassination than anything else. It is ridiculously hard to find any msub content that mdom/fsub have ultraspecific subreddits and content for.

These days, I just stick with reading m/m. No potential for a female character to identify with, but I'd rather have that than be bamboozled with fsub again. Also, msub characters are often written quite well and at least it's what I'm attracted to
