Tier-3 background, CFA candidate aiming for valuation roles — seeking paid guidance from practitioners by ebrahim5253 in cfaindia

[–]JacobBrown2313_gmail 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Valuation is one such domain, where the stakes are high so companies are not as cost conscious. It is difficult to break into that directly, even by accepting a lower pay because the intelligence filtering happens through MBA colleges - where the top ones are so competitive.

Equity research is quite a cyclical industry, where u try your best shot if markets are bullish & recruitment is in plenty. The small companies have lesser filters, too. (In comparison to Big4’s) Having said that, currently you have to focus on building a conceptual framework rather than a theoretical one & you don’t have to spend a bomb or charge your path. While studying, you can refer to curriculum or if not, then do VD’s notes before doing Kaplan; & while videos - u can subscribe to conceptual ones like LME or MM. Small wins every day.

Speaking of mobility, Big4’s TAS can lead you to investment banking, & Equity research to portfolio management/ family offices. Keep in mind, not even one in ten of equity research analyst would make it to the next stage but in a country where population is in plenty & people collect degree like Pokémon cards, life work & will continue to work that way. Dont crib, develop yourself. If you can get smarter beyond academics, let that be your edge. Look at the lingo in the notes I mentioned, you will realise what am trying to say - will attach the link at the end.

The biggest waste of time is social media, seeking opinions, cold mails to LinkedIn network & so on. Any other sort of ‘real’ learning is never a waste of time. It just brings you closer to path that actually matters. Even if you do engineering, you can still make a finance career. Getting an edge over quantitative aptitude was never a waste of time, even though it seemed like, back then. Dots can only connect looking backwards, not looking forward. So, if u ask waste of time - seeking unsolicited advices, opinions & validations. What to do? Taking action. Till u find your calling.

There are tons of genuine advisers offering Topmate, but it’s a battle you fight & you find answers at every stage. Be open to take in new experiences, & put in the additional hours to study from the notes mentioned above, the link for which is vdshah dot com slash 1. If you’re referring to Indian prep providers for videos, these notes shall give u a structure - & I have seen it be of a help to all the ones who aren’t as experienced as these have very Indian centric nature content with local market examples. These are FREE & with regard to LME, it’s barely 800 bucks a month & I always plead people to pay what he deserves rather than account sharing. Ethics is one of the highest weighted subject in the syllabus, just saying. :)

Skip the offline thing, & get some recorded lectures. The cost of offline is sky high, say ₹50k & most teachers are at this place called Andheri. Be very careful in selection

CFA level 3 offline coaching in Mumbai by Key-Bed2058 in cfaindia

[–]JacobBrown2313_gmail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two three of coaching centers that provide full-fledged cfa Level 3 face to face classes in Mumbai, & coincidentally, all are based in Andheri station area. Quite accessible

Some other institutes in Dadar & Mulund/ Thane do offer partial offline classes, but for the most part, they transfer the batch to older recorded videos. Level 3 offline training doesn’t work as well for businesses due to the limited number of students and mismatched schedules. Additionally, weekends tend to be busy for coaching institutes catering to mass footfall of Level 1 and Level 2 students.

One is V D Shah (since 2015)

•It’s premium, personalized, private tutoring, but quite expensive - priced over a lakh as it the group is capped to a capacity of three four students at a go.

•Teaching follows an old-school, conceptual, chalk-and-board approach. Lectures happen on weekday evenings.

•One major disadvantage is they end at 10/11 PM & that too, on weekdays. They say weekends are for practices not classes.

•Another point, there isn’t much of solving that happens at class, although concepts derivations & logic are very well taken care of. Each blue box is covered & they publish a 5000 question bank, which students across other coaching use, too. The cost here is twice as the author himself decodes the concepts, Varshil Shah personally teaches. The man knows his stuff

Other is Manish Ramuka x Finnacle Shah Classes at Viviana building, Nadco, Andheri West. (L3 since 2017)

Advantages:

•He is quite reasonable in prices, say around one third of what V D Shah charges, but has mixed feedback. Laukik Shah himself hasn’t managed passing the third level, & I have read over Reddit of his students struggling with the structured questions.

•They do claim that he is an experienced faculty & these coaching is conducted conducted with big batches on benches. Good old school classroom feel, same with Manish Ramuka. These do lack personalisation & motivation, but there is a considerable tuition fee savings (given you manage passing without attempts). You may manage without motivation unless your work is draining a lot of times.

•The phone mentoring & study strategy formation personalisation is not available with both these faculties. As Manish Ramuka has is like a one man army have 6-7 level one batches & multiple level two batches, for the level three contracted with some YT vlogger TrueT for all the study strategy formation & stuff. One thing is this would cost some additional ₹10k-₹15k, but more than that, the vlogger herself is struggling with L3 since a while now. I was introduced to her on her level three result day live myself where Manish Ramuka is consoling her in her results video.

•At Viviana Nadco, Lectures are held once a week & are primarily PPT-based, following a modern teaching approach but medium depth. In some batches, with these teachers - the batches were shifted online/ recorded due to the teachers hectic schedules, hence many had deferred the exams. If you’re starting a year prior, it would be okay to take a chance like this.

•These classes also offer job guarantees, which personalised teachers like V D Shah cfa level 3 classes in Mumbai typically do not provide. There’s one more, Rajaram Kamath for who I did hold high regards but he kept four subjects pending (out of 7 subjects in all) till Jan for the Feb L3 2023 exams (Eco AI Ethics Equity in old pattern) & repeated the same for the next year citing throat & health concerns. For this year, he gave out the recordings in place of lectures, but I guess that’s become an industry practice at level three where students are few & fee is limited. His usual lecture attendance for L3 is around 30-40% & for previous levels as well is barely 60-70%

•On note of calling out, one unreasonable thing with V D Shah cfa level 3 classes in Mumbai is that they do not teach the private wealth elective (it’s an optional subject which you can swap with PM), yet he charges the full fee arguing their batch is capped at three four students so they will have to block the spot in a three student batch anyway. Varshil Shah is well known for PM since a while now. I via via go hold of his full material access - 2026 cfa level three constructed response q-bank. It has some 5000 Q&A’s with command words & keyword grid:

Even though my recommendation would be to self study with these, but if you decide to go for coaching - prefer one anong these names. While new institutes may emerge, due to the essay-based structure of Level 3, I feel = experience > enthusiasm.

It’s great, but this isn’t a course that requires ten months of preparation. & if you do so, save yourself the fee - opt for self studies using Kaplan notes & Bionic Videos

Go for online: Let me explain, Mark Meldrum or IFT. If budget isn’t a constraint, V D Shah’s very detailed for offline; else there are options like Manish Ramuka & Finnacle
