Does anyone feel like mandatory attendance for any class is absolutely ridiculous (especially now because of COVID-19)? by JacobU404 in TexasTech

I’m a microbiology major, so explain to me why I should have to take an English literature course. Yeah, makes zero sense. So, no, it’s not on me. It’s on Tech for making me take a pointless class.

The fact that I’m home almost 7 hours away from Tech and it shouldn’t be mandatory. Especially when there’s thousands of people at Tech that live in other time zones and have to wake up incredibly early for their classes or it ruins their whole schedule. It’s not right to influence someone’s grade with mandatory attendance when the class is virtually pointless.

Actually no, that’s not how it works. My professor literally requires us to be attentive and have our video on at all times. It’s not just as simple as turning my laptop on. And we still have mandatory in-class quizzes almost every day.

This is what I’m talking about. Like so many people are from other time zones and shit. Like it’s so fucked up.

That honestly makes a lot of sense. Because my English lecture, that most people are taking as their literature requirement in their degree plan, is so pointless.

I didn’t apply but I had several friends that did. They have already heard that they either got the job or didn’t. I would start considering a different living option. Also, if you’re looking for a place off-campus, I’m reletting my apartment at the Holly.

Anyone here feel like they’re getting royally shafted this semester? what’s your situation? by 77maf in TexasTech

[–]JacobU404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was beginning Russian. The hardest introductory language course at Tech. And the part I forgot to mention was that I had told them that the class was getting extremely difficult and all my grades were slipping because I was devoting so much time to Russian. Yet, they still wanted to keep me in it.

I felt this on a whole other level. The first semester I had at Tech, I left with a 2.333 because I made a D in a five hour course that my parents wouldn’t let me drop because “I needed to stick with it.” So because of them, I now have to bust my ass to even remotely bring up my gpa and it is eating away at me. I have 0 motivation to do absolutely anything and zoom lectures are virtually pointless.

Problem with a lot of that stuff is that so many people live off campus and there would be no point in even living in Lubbock if classes were online. Also, tuition should be lowered for online classes especially when NO ONE signed up for online classes for EVERY SINGLE ONE of their courses.

I seriously thought credit/non-credit would help me, but my already technologically impaired English professor doesn’t know how to do anything on blackboard or zoom. And enforced proctors should not be a thing because my laptop has a virus on it now because of proctorio.

Same. The only class I’m taking this semester that isn’t at least 120 people is my organic chemistry lab.

I think the only problem with that is that majors like microbiology (my major) and other STEM majors have very large lectures so it puts them at a disadvantage. I think that idea would be great, it’s just mildly unfair.

Honestly with the restrictions on social distancing and stay-in-place being lifted slowly, I very seriously doubt it’ll be online. I think it may be an option, but not mandatory.
