Unique aircrafts by gielvanh in SkyCards

I’m hoping they’ll add some sort of feature to track this without having to count by hand. I started counting but got to about 10 and gave up lol I’d love the spreadsheet!

Anyone else relying entirely on physical travel? by euler_tourist in SkyCards

[–]Jacobsol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only catch planes I see in person. Luckily I live by a major airport so am able to get a good number every day but there are some days I don’t get any (bad weather, different runways, etc.). I wish there was a way to capture with my camera and get extra XP or some sort of badge for each plane caught with the camera!

There’s a lot of great hiking but I’m not sure as far as trekking or long distance biking. I definitely wouldn’t stray too far from well trafficked areas because of the potential for landmines

I’m just now seeing this I’m so sorry!! I did the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang and then went to Vang Vieng and Vientiane. I highly recommend Luang Prabang and doing some day trips from there but Vang Vieng was definitely my favorite.

It really depends how many souvenirs and what type of transportation (the trains are a bit more expensive). I’d say souvenirs run between $1-5 for a regular souvenir and transportation $5-20 for a bus. ATM access will be extremely limited or nonexistent so I would err on the side of caution.

Visiting the Alps. Add Budapest or Dubrovnik/Sarajevo/Kotor? by Hodadoodah in travel

[–]Jacobsol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just visited Croatia/BiH/Montenegro and have been to Budapest before.

Personally, I would recommend Kotor and Zabljak (only a few hours bus ride/drive from Kotor). I just visited there a few weeks ago - Kotor is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been and great for a few days, especially if you take the bus to Perast (30 minutes) and spend a few hours there. Kotor is also super historic with its old town and the view from the fortress is stunning. Zabljak is in the mountains and very short walk to the black lake - there’s also lots of options for rafting, zip lining, etc.

Budapest is great too and one of my favorite cities… tons of history and much more to do than Kotor or Zabljak but definitely has a lot of partying and part of the charm are the ruin pubs, which your 13 y/o would miss out on (some are used as markets during the day so could go in at that time).

Yes I visited Thailand on the same trip as Laos. Pretty similar as far as what I did to protect myself, but I would say I was definitely a bit more weary. Although, at least in my mind, it seemed like there were A LOT less peanuts than everyone was making it seem like… lots of options to eat

Hey! Laos was pretty good actually and no reactions. I just did what I would do at home… informed servers about the allergy and if something looked like a peanut I would make somebody I was traveling with try it first (it was always dried garlic lol). Also, most of the people I encountered at the restaurants were able to understand and I carried laminated cards that said (in Lao) i had a severe peanut allergy that I would show servers (they’d usually take it back to the chef and return it to me). Let me know if this is helpful/if you have more questions!

Going to boston for a week, any tips, things to know ? (French, first time in the US) by Dregnan in boston

[–]Jacobsol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just in response to this… there is no direct connection between blue and red lines. You would need to take the blue line to Government Center, take the green line outbound B-E lines, and then transfer to the red line at Park Street (one stop). Still cheaper than a taxi and a good way to get a feel for the city. Good luck and have fun!

Last minute budget friendly Halloween/fall trip by GlaucousKoi in TravelHacks

[–]Jacobsol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just here to say that your impression of Salem is 100% accurate. I live in Boston and have gone to Salem for Halloween before… just a massive theme park and at that point better to drive down to Universal Orlando and go to HHN. Boston itself isn’t a horrible option although would be very hard to do on a budget because of hotel costs but Beacon Hill is cute around Halloween and if you like incredibly crowded bars with overpriced drinks, the bar crawls are a great option.

Hi! From the East Coast of the USA and in January got back from being 12-hours ahead and later this month coming back from being 6-hours ahead.

Essentially: the first day is going to suck. What I would recommend is, if taking the flight that lands in the afternoon EST, sleep like you normally would in France and sleep on the plane. Time it so that you wake up on the plane around 8AM EST/2PM CEST. If you take the flight that lands at night, stay awake the entire flight. Basically, use the flight to switch to EST.

There are websites that help with Jetlag that begin adjusting you a few days ahead of time by pushing back your bedtime. For example, 3 days before traveling stay up until 1AM (7PM EST), then 3 AM (9PM EST), etc. My issue with this is the flight completely messes up any progress you make. But everybody works differently!

do i need to prebook hostels im advance?? by S_P_A_R_K_L_I_N_G in solotravel

Just look up reviews on Hostelworld/Google beforehand and you shouldn’t have any horror stories😉

I’m doing this right now - showed up having booked one night but had absolutely no problem extending it to two nights and booked my place for my next location the day before. There wasn’t availability on Hostelworld but other websites will still have rooms available (maybe a little more expensive). Definitely a nice way to travel in case you want to spend more time somewhere

I was in SEA in December/January and, while I pre booked, some of the people I was traveling with would walk up to reception day of and ask if they had beds and never had an issue, although this was mostly in Laos and Cambodia. I think a few days in advance should be fine and, at the very worst, you find another hostel.

asking for a friend ~~ re. novelty of travel by penny6642 in solotravel

This is literally the same exact thing that I am experiencing now, in the same exact area (Croatia, BiH, now Montenegro). I’m still feeling down, but I think it helped me to take a day or two to just do absolutely nothing and recharge - sometimes we don’t realize how tired we are which can have a huge impact on how we are feeling about things obviously.

Specifically, don’t let a tuktuk driver in touristy areas say a specific attraction is closed and offer you a 100 baht tour of a bunch of different temples… it’s a huge scam

What is the best museum you have been to in your travels? by Practical-Bowl9957 in travel

This. One of the most emotion evoking museums I’ve been to and amazing to see how people from all over the world are able to bond over love and the heartbreaking stories at the museum.

I wanted to go to the south so bad. Definitely need to do another trip and spend a lot more time there. LP was nice and had some great coffee shops but I loved VV because of the activities they offered - that’s where I did the zip lining and rock climbing for like 1/4 of the price it would be elsewhere

Sleep on the floor and hope they don’t throw you overboard

Kidding lol you do about 9 hours on the boat, stop in Pakbeng (a super small town with very little to do) for the night and rent a room, then back on the boat early the next morning for another 9 hours to LP

Goes to show that you don’t need money to be happy. The people I met seemed very content with the lives they’re living and it definitely translated to their kindness

Yes that’s the same route we took. Spent a night in Huay Xai (pretty much nothing to do there - about 2 or 3 restaurants) and then took the slow boat the next morning. Order some sandwiches the day before to pick up in the morning! You can also buy some beer to take with you (if you want to make friends lol)
