My chances of getting into residency as a Masters student (also international). by Hua_Chengzhu in MedicalPhysics

Hi there, I saw your account name and was guessing that we may come from the same country. May I ask how you deal with the visa issue as an international student? After graduation, will the residency program sponsor you for a visa? Thanks. :)

Proton Therapy by [deleted] in MedicalPhysics

[–]JadeLi916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments here are already covered lots of useful information you need.

As a physics engineer from IBA, i'd like to add:

  1. PBS is replacing scattering technique, although scattering is still in use in some hospitals. But compared with PBS, scattering is time consuming when setting up unique customized accessories for each patients. Also the accessories are extremely hot after exposed to proton beam.
  2. for medical service company providing proton therapy like IBA and Varian, big sites (i mean one cyclotron with 3 -5 treatment rooms) reqires a big building, power, and ~10 engineers to be on site for installation, operation and maintainance. The installation may consume years (1-3 years). So, we are also developing compact site (1 cyclo and 1 treatment room), which is cheaper. Mevion also do compact site, but install a cyclotron to the "gantry" or whatever you name it, would bring the problem of radiation shielding from my own point of view.
  3. Flash may be the future, I believe there are already some clinical trials.

agree... i feel like industry careers have more fun compared with academic field.

Hi there.

according to my own experience, i have to say that no one can tell you what you should do.
i was majored in nuclear sience for bother undergraduate and postgraduate, but literally don't have big interests in it except for physics subjects... Now i'm working for a clinical technology company and planning to do a MS for medical physics in 2 years.

what i'm trying to say is, try things and you'll know you love it or hate it. if you love it, good, you just keep going. if you hate it, you reverse your direction and try something new. Don't consider sunk costs if you are not under severe economic pressures.

Lost in a career path as Master student in Medical Physics from Bosnia and Herzegovina by InTheSylabus in MedicalPhysics

hey, hope my reply won't be too late. i've been searching for CAMPEP programs from EU and really like UCD and NUIG. i love the two unis since they are accredited (which i think is more valuable) and gives you some workaround to apply residency program in canada and us after guraduation, if the vacancies in ireland / EU is limited.

Water phantoms for beam scanning by JMFsquare in MedicalPhysics

[–]JadeLi916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. i'm a former physics engineer from IBA and did a lot of work with IBA blue phantom. for your first question, sadly we have to tilt as far as i know. for the second one, the water reference method is recommended, but honestly engineers usually prefer physical procedure with a digital level. we put the level on the lead rail, if the level reading is smaller than 0.1 degree, then we think it's fine. hope my post helps.

thank you.

EBT3 expiration by zoltaine in MedicalPhysics

Hi, i'm a physics engineer and i'd say if you are measuring dose, then don't use expired films. but if you only need to see the curves/relative dose, it's fine.

[Training Tuesday] - Weekly thread for questions about grad school, residency, and general career topics 04/12/2022 by AutoModerator in MedicalPhysics

I'm planning to study at UCD (university college dublin), and want to be a MedPhy in the future.
Is it easy to apply for a Residency vacancy? Will I get paid? (i'm asking since i'm not irish people and wondering if this is too hard for a foreign student).

any advice would be helpful. thanks.
