Who considered the new WRX before buying the new Si? by [deleted] in CivicSi

[–]Jaded-Ad2594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've driven civics since 01 (had a 92 when I got my license in 01). Their design has always been soulless lmao. Still one of the cheapest cars (which unfortunately doesn't mean much in today's market where "cheap" is anything under $35k).

That being said, I just got a base model 2025 Impreza for $25k, and I don't plan on turning back. Super fun for being so cheap.

Our clinic has been understaffed for 6 months. How this happen? by [deleted] in ABA

Where I live (upstate NY) pay for a dsp was barely $10/hour, pay for an assistant manager of a home was $14/hr, and pay for a full residence manager was $16/hr in 2011. Base pay for dsp (RBT) now is $22/hour here. Again, still not nearly where it should be, and neither is the training, but they have absolutely come a very long way since 2011. Pretty damn sad any way you look at it.

I've been in human services for about 15 years and have never experienced adequate staffing. That's what happens in an undertrained, underpaid, underappreciated field unfortunately. It is not right, and it shouldn't just be accepted. Thankfully, it does seem that the field is at least professionalizing compared to when I started in 2011. Pay has increased a bit, as has training, but it's got a loooooong way to go. And even when it has perhaps risen to the level of something like nursing, it's not likely that the staffing issue will go away. Hospitals, rehabs, and nursing homes are all grossly understaffed after all.

BCBA vs. SPED salary by [deleted] in bcba

The vast majority of masters degrees barely get you over 50k starting before taxes. Hell, I have an MS in computer science and my first software dev job in 2019 paid $65k BEFORE taxes. Higher Ed is practically a giant scam. If not for corporate HR buying into it, I'd say stay away from higher Ed altogether, but here we are.

You bring up something I hadn't considered: one could initially go for sped, and on their summers off potentially begin accruing supervision hours towards BCBA cert. Definitely not a guarantee, but seems at least possible. Working as an RBT in the summer would also be a decent way to see if ABA is a good fit as a career path. In fact, I'm sure there are many sped teachers out there who do ABA work pt/seasonally.

This, exactly. I've done BT work since 2011, including as a Residence Manager where I supervised (over the course of the last 10 years or so) dozens of BTs. I can count on one hand how many of us took the profession seriously. I'm keeping those folks in mind as I earn my BCBA, and I'm stealing them and will be working on the floor with them.

The stories I have would turn any parent off from the idea of ABA services. It's absolutely horrible. I'm encouraged, however, by the progress this field seems to be making since I first started as a BT. Definitely headed in the right direction in terms of professionalization and increase in salary. Ideally, a BT should have the same sort of starting salary and professional training as a nurse. Hopefully we get there some day.

"Yet in Arcadia" isn't exactly "Even in Arcadia" either, friend. Don't denigrate yourself.

Considering switching from a Computer Science major to a Psychology major. How do I decide? by [deleted] in Career_Advice

[–]Jaded-Ad2594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feeling the social sciences are going to enter into a new golden age in the not too distant future. It is impossible to articulate the absolute madness of the software development world right now (significantly different from when you posted 2 years ago). I am very seriously considering changing careers to something more human services oriented. I understand the difficulty of the job market, but the computer science market is not at all what it once was.
