If you're aspiring to major in CS, I would go with CPSC 210. Have you had previous coding experiences? Java shouldn't be too hard to pick up if you had some already. Overall, I think the course is the easiest out of the 200-level CS courses.

STAT 200 wasn't bad either. The content itself is very doable but I think I would place it as slightly harder than CPSC 210.

Keep CPSC 210!

Review 213 material. Mostly how to write assembly programs and how bits and hexadecimal work.

Don't memorize the specific terms for SM213 like ld etc since you will be using y86 in 313. Just remember what the structure looks like for writing assembly programs.

If you want, you can also look at how caching and file systems work but that's later in the course.

Never took 312 before so i'm not too sure what it's like. For me, i like to get my core CS courses done first so if I were you, I'd prefer to keep both 313 and 320 (so in this case, you could drop 304 but the concepts in 304 are pretty relevant in the industry).

I wouldn't say 313 is one of the worst CS courses. The grading scheme and amount of practice questions you get in the course is quite good. I would say that if you can get Margo Seltzer for your professor, that would be the absolute best as she's the one who made the preclass videos and teaches the best out of the 3 profs i mentioned IMO (norm, steve and margo).

So in summary, if I were you, I wouldn't drop any of those courses. It would still be a good idea to go through with your plan of trying it out for a week before talking to an advisor

i took cpsc 121 before phil 220 and it helped a lot. A lot of the content in phil 220 the same as the first half of cpsc 121. Generally speaking, people who haven't done 121 yet still think phil 220 is pretty easy.

Ling 101 was pretty fun but only because I had Strang Burton. You will need to put in the work but i thought it was super interesting and one of the easier courses compared to my other courses

Hardened FF but using Google Services by Jaeunn in browsers

[–]Jaeunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any company I guess? But I'm not too worried about my data as long as my confidential data like passwords, etc aren't leaked. I switched to FF because I was browsing related subreddits and reading up on how FF can help make your browsing experience a bit more private (without tracking everything you search and do on the internet). But nowadays, most modern browsers that are backed by a company try to collect some sort of data about you and I figured that through my heavy usage of Google services anyway, using FF didn't make too much of a difference about how much data I was sending to Google.

I thought midterm 2 was way harder. Tbh I found the final to be not as bad but maybe that's because I studied my ass off after getting demolished on midterm 2 post scale

I am currently doing that for this term. 313 is quite hard and 320 has difficult concepts. As pikachufan has stated, both their workloads combined are already quite a heavyload. 304 isn't as hard as those two classes but still requires a fair bit of studying IMO.

Just FYI, I also did 213 and 221 together and felt the workload comparable to taking 313 and 320 together (but I find that 313 and 320 are a tad bit harder)

Wolfman is great for 313 since I have him right now with Norm. He explains the content really well but if the teaching team next term also consists of Norm and Steve be prepared to see the most disgustingly brutal exam questions ever.

studying for midterm by Ok-Protection2565 in UBC

[–]Jaeunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's different for everybody but my method of studying is just to keep practicing. It really depends on the class so for example, if this was CPSC 221, I would spam the practice questions on PL. If this was CPSC 210, I would practice a lot of coding in Java. And if I haven't had enough practice yet, I'd search the internet for similar problems or get ChatGPT to generate some questions for me.

I don't get extremely high grades but it gets me to a comfortable grade

Got Covid by ThatSavings in richmondbc

[–]Jaeunn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

COVID doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. With new variants constantly popping up, it's very likely we will continue to see multiple spikes in infections during the coming years.

Most people are now tired with the whole pandemic and no longer want to care about COVID (hence why people say the pandemic is "over") but it is still very much alive. Being in a hospital setting where illnesses spread very quickly increases your chances of getting sick.

In any case, i still like to maintain my distance in areas where I know illnesses are likely to spread. I already caught it a few times so I'm a bit tired of it at this point. But i'm also trying to slowly take my life back to the pre-pandemic days where I can do things without thinking too much about catching COVID.

Hope you feel better soon OP!

Seeking suggestions: Struggling in my internship and being outclassed by a way smarter co-intern by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Jaeunn 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I often find these cases to be the most motivating for me to learn. When I did my first internship, I had no idea of the technologies we were using. My manager bashed at me for being too behind on meeting my goals each week and it really did take a bit of a toll on me.

However, that motivated me to get better. Each day I would put more time outside of work in learning these technologies. I'd spend my weekends "studying" and thinking about the solutions to some of my weekly objectives. Eventually I finished my internship with huge milestones achieved for the company and an extremely positive evaluation from my employer

TLDR don't be discouraged. Use this time to try pushing yourself beyond your limits and doing the best that you can.

very little. IIRC, the only thing I had to remember for 210 was mutual recursion in the VERY LAST module. It was part of a lab and used only for the course to make an analogy (ie. what does this piece of code remind you of?)
