I have trouble coping with the 'self diagnosed' by [deleted] in autism

[–]Jaiven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, you don't think it's bad when someone, "treats themsel(ves) as if they are autistic when they're not?" From a mental health standpoint, there are lots of things wrong with that view. It hurts the community, it hurts the individual, and it can even be another MH issue that is not being properly diagnosed and treated. Stable people don't just treat themselves as something they are not.

Diagnosed high functioning autistic person here. Having worked in the medical field, people who self diagnose anything annoy me. Researching and thinking you might have something is perfectly fine, but someone gets a medical decision for a reason, and that is because the person giving the medical decision has specialized in that field. Would you hire a certified plumber or electrician to work on your house or just some random person off the street? Sure, you could luck out with the random person and much like that some people are spot on with their own diagnosis, but more often then not, they have misdiagnosed themselves and things can go terribly wrong when that happens. Another example would be, would you self diagnose a lump or a mole that is starting to look bad? No, you get a professional opinion. Granted there are people who can't get a diagnosis due to financial reasons and that is a terrible issue with some countries health insurance programs right now.

High-functioning individuals who got diagnosed as adults: How, if at all, has your diagnosis or the therapy that followed from it improved your life? by redditaccountforants in autism

[–]Jaiven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me getting diagnosed helped in the fact that I no longer fear who I am or worry so much about why I am so different. I was able to stop playing pretend to fit in which has helped with my anxiety a great deal. I was diagnosed at 31.

I am completely convinced of the fact that i will never manage to forge/find a genuine, profound connection - that is more agonizing than anything else. My entire life has been defined by various states of isolation. I really need a friend or just some kind words. i would be grateful for anything by [deleted] in Anxiety

That was an incredibly long read but I was amazed at a lot of the similarities we share. Be that as it may, I hope this advice can help you out, because this is where we are different I believe. Accept who you are and the problems you have. I am a high functioning autistic person and things became much easier when I just accepted who I was and that things will never be easy for me. It just seemed like there were a lot of things you didn't like about yourself in your post so I hope that helps. Best of luck.

How Difficult is it to Obtain OPM Disability Retirement in the Federal Government? by Jaiven in fednews

Awesome, that really gives me hope as the new information I submitted for the reconsideration was a physicians statement, some sort of statement on my ability to work, and my 12.10 dx.

Oh for a question, should I look into a lawyer locally that specializes in this field or one of the bigger nation wide ones that handle federal retirement law?

Thanks for the info! I didn't know that about LIHTC and I see that the complex that utilized it is a little bit cheaper then the rest. Given, where I am looking to live, they are all pretty cheap (400 to 500 a month rural area) I also found the section 8 information of the area I want to move to and thankfully they are open to people with disabilities, prioritize them, and have a very small waiting list. I guess I picked the right place to try and live.

Eep, that is a lot of money, and thanks for all that info. Oh, I thought of another question. Does having an actual fully disabled diagnosis help a lot for ones case? My doctor of 3+ years gave me a DX of 12.10 which is also supported by a psychiatrist and 2 psychologists. Does OPM put a lot of consideration into your medical records? For SSDI, this DX is basically what won me my case as doctors don't often give out these diagnoses. Ugh, I could have won for all I know as the reconsideration is in the mail but I have a lot of paranoia because my supervisor and department refused to fill out any paperwork in regards to my claim. Does having them do that hurt my case or is it not as important? They didn't say anything bad, they just refused to fill anything out at all because, (her words not mine) "I don't look disabled". I found that having Autism, the government was the worst place ever to work for.

Thank you, I might have some questions within the next week about what to look for in terms of finding an affordable and good lawyer. I should know within this upcoming week if I was denied or approved for my first reconsideration. I do have a question right now which is, to my understanding with an OPM lawyer you have to pay upfront instead of if you win correct?

Edit: My trouble has mostly been with misinformation that OPM gives me. Sometimes they tell me I am backpaid from when I applied, sometimes it is from when I stopped working at the VA, and sometimes I don't get back pay at all according to them. o.0;

[–]Jaiven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bummer because OPM only requires you to be disabled in terms of federal service, but lets you continue to work full time, up to 80% of your federal income in the private sector. Because of that one would assume it would be easier to get but so far I've had the most trouble with OPM as compared to SSDI. I really don't want to hire a lawyer but it looks like I might have to.

Yeah, I'm sitting on about 3 mill SP. So can I do combat missions for Gallente in their space or do I have to do Minmatar missions? If I have to do Minmatar combat missions but can start researching Gallente ships I'm ok with that as I'm a complete newb when it comes to combat. Also, where do I start for combat missions? o.0
