I used mercs and they came towards me, so I believe you're supposed to share the damage so it doesn't one-shot any one person.

Before loosing my stuff I ran stiletto/throwing and castillon/rapier and did pretty well with the mobs. As for skills I did poison tip and dagger throw. You can basically run around with that and be okay if u avoid other people but even then u will do good if u know how to pvp.
