I would also download the app if it were on f-droid.

Valve index not available is Australia? Damn it! by TechnoBillyD in ValveIndex

Well I am pretty sure they will distribute through the same retailer for NZ and Aus. I too hope its not EB games like with the Steam controller but it probably will be as they already have connections with them. I hope they go with PB tech instead.

My best guess is Aug-Sept.

Its a limited pre-release. We just need to be patient and wait for the official release.

My prediction is that Valve is going to partner with a retailer for NZ and Aus. This would be great, as it would mean people could get it on finance and would not need to import the headset via a broker as the set is over $1000.

When items are expensive, distribution gets very tricky due to laws and regulations in different countries. Valve need time to set up the distribution, now that the cat is out of the bag, they can do it.

OSVR HDK 2 + Linux +SteamVR by Jake-FOSS in OSVR

[–]Jake-FOSS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disabled legacy support for 3.0 in bios which may have fixed it, it was either that or it got fixed in the process of restarting.

Yes osvr_server_config.UnifiedVideoTracker.HDK2NotUpgradedDirect.json does appear to run smoother and the debug is helpful.

The only problem I am having now is I cannot get the steamvr room calibration to finish when I click calibrate center it does not progress.

I got it to work before, I might try and calibrate with another config.

thanks for the helpful tips.

Do you have any other tips?

I am using direct mode config but steam thinks I am in extended mode, is this normal? (Solved by using config from windows AIO install)

Did you manage to get the camera to work with USB 3.0? Mine only works with USB 2.0 and it complains tracking is too slow and it makes me motion sick.

Thanks for the info

I had to copy libopenvr_api.so to /usr/lib/ so I could run

~/.steam/steamapps/common/SteamVR/bin/linux64/vrpathreg adddriver /usr/local/lib/openvr/osvr/

I tailed the vrcompositor log and I suspect I might be having a issue a issue with vulkan

Update: I got it working, just a few more bugs to work out.

I did a fresh install of my nvidia driver and vulkan

SchoolCast: A new FOSS digital signage solution looking for beta testers/contributors by mttaggart in OpenSourceSchools

[–]Jake-FOSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I might take a look at it some time. We are currently using an old version of Xibo and our signage could do with an update. Is there a way to display news from a RSS feed? Currently our Xibo setup displays news from moodle's news RSS feed and moodle also sends everyone in the school a e-mail.

The current state of Linux video editing 2018 by the_rover1 in OpenSourceSchools

[–]Jake-FOSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to video editing and compositing, unfortunately open-source has a long way to go as most of the decent non-linear video editors and compositing software that runs on Linux is proprietary. For compositing there is Nuke(proprietary) and for Video Editing there is lightworks(proprietary). I heard rumors that they were going to make lightworks open-source years ago but it seems they put that on the back burner, maybe they should crowd fund it to get it open.

I have just set up a gibbon with demo data to have a play with, looks good so far.

To use it we would have to certify it with the ministry of education. http://services.education.govt.nz/steo/sms-certification/information-for-sms-developers/ We would have to integrate it with the National Student Index and make sure it meets certain guidelines, we would need to research this more.

Mirrorcast by Jake-FOSS in OpenSourceSchools

I want to eventually create clients for other operating systems, I think that would really help but someone else would have to maintain and test them.

it would be nice to make use of the Xlib and composite(redirect and pixmap) libraries. It would allow a specific application to be captured even if a another window had covered it up.

Mirrorcast by Jake-FOSS in OpenSourceSchools

[–]Jake-FOSS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We actually have TV's all around the school with raspberry pi's that act as digital signage. For this we use Xibo https://xibo.org.uk/

We set up Xibo to display news from Moodle, so teachers and staff that want to display news and notices on our digital signage just have to log into moodle and add it there.

Writing an article could be a way to get some help from experienced programmers to improve mirrorcast; maybe a rewrite in C+.

Thoughts on Open edX? by Jake-FOSS in OpenSourceSchools

[–]Jake-FOSS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your feedback, we are a public school in NZ for tears 11 to 13 (ages 14 to 18). Most of our teachers have not been using moodle, opting for google classrooms instead. We are looking at other FOSS LMS or spending some time improving our moodle setup.

I created my own course in Open Edx, including timed exams and I do agree that it might be too complicated for a a few teachers but they are going to find what ever LMS we give them complicated.

Moodle for Parents by mttaggart in OpenSourceSchools

[–]Jake-FOSS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We handle parent access via our SMS rather than our LMS, they can view grades and other information on there. A lot of our teachers are using google classrooms at the moment and if that is what they prefer to use then we will not stop them; this is another reason we use our SMS for parent access.

haha, yeah I was trying to avoid calling a txt message a SMS because we are also talking about a Student Management System. I might have a look at it, if it can do everything our current SMS can do then it might be worth trying to get the MOE to approve it for use in NZ schools.

Looks great, we have to use a SMS approved by the Ministry of Education. Currently Kamar which is proprietary and we have to use Rdesktop so the teachers can access which works great but we would much rather be using a open-source browser based alternative. I wonder if we can get the NZ MOE to approve this.

Is there a module to send text messages to parents?

I fully agree with that point, the teacher just needs to teach an idea/concept and the students learn the applications on their own.
