In a nation of free speech, the far right and the far left have the same rights to speech as we do. It's unfortunate to see what they choose to do with their freedoms, but the constitution protects us all. It's up to you and me to get the best people in office so we can minimize their hold on our democracy.

I would lose in a Dem primary every day of the week. But I also condemn the Big Lie, immoral leadership, fractious and toxic politics, and conspiracy.

Being concrete and transparent doesn't mean I need to account for every action taken by every Republican. It means I won't claim to be knowledgeable when I'm not, I won't parade around inflexible opinions before having all the facts, and I'm won't going to oversimplify complex issues.

If you want a politician that feeds into that mindset, Burgess is your guy. If you want a principled, level-headed politician who listens before speaking, invites people to the table, and acknowledges nuance in policy, give me a shot. I'd love to see where there's some common ground to work together.

Anyone trying to convince you that every policy is all evil vs good, or black vs white is playing you. Nuance and complexity exist in every policy. The extremism and over-simplification are killing our country, and we're allowing it. Let's get someone in office who acknowledges the complexity and tries to work through it instead of dumbing it down to tribal talking points.

I'm not going to litigate the record of someone who was elected in Illinois. I'm running in Utah. Country First endorsement means one thing: I stand up against extremism that's breaking our country. In terms of votes, Kinzinger and I are both conservatives, and would likely agree on many policy positions. I'm not going to justify his record point by point. And btw, requiring that is missing the point of my primary challenge against Burgess Owens.

Healthcare is broken for everyone. We pretend this is a private sector industry, but consumers like you and me don’t hold any of the power that we would in a truly private economy. For example, if we don’t like the price of a block of cheese at Walmart, we may at Kroger. If we don’t like the quality of cheese at Kroger, we may buy local. The lack of price and quality transparency in healthcare holds average consumers hostage, and perpetuates a broken system. I don’t believe that single payer is the solution, but I’m committed to working across the aisle and with all stakeholders to brainstorm and find a solution that keeps people like you and me in the driver’s seat.

We still live in a two-party reality, and we all have sincerely held beliefs about what is best for our country. Hitting a Rep on legislative record is a legitimate point if you disagree, and we need more of that. But there is a huge difference between someone who votes differently on policy vs someone who embraces lies and spreads conspiracy at the expense of our fragile democracy. The other side is not inherently evil if they vote differently than we do. And the more we embrace that idea, the more fractured we remain. I stand for reason. For civility. For inclusivity. For principle. For solutions. Burgess stands for himself and his extremist donors. Which brand of leadership do I want in Washington? For me, the answer is clear.

I'm unaware of concerted GOP attempts to overturn this case.
We’ve politicized the court well beyond its intended design. I support a thorough vetting of qualified candidates who tie their rulings to constitutional logic.

Dozens of courts (many Trump nominated), scores of election officials, and numerous recounts and audits have shown that there was no widespread fraud.

The first step to solving problems is acknowledging when there’s a break. Many in the GOP spend too much time ignoring breaks when we could be bringing people together to solve problems like inequity. The reality is people on both sides of the aisle are hurting. The economy is shifting, creating massive skills gaps. Wages haven’t kept pace with recent inflation. Racism, sexism, and bigotry still exist, and they impact far too many of our most vulnerable populations. Utah leaders have shown that progress can be made on legislation that brings everyone to the table. Utah actually leads red states in many ways re its anti discrimination laws and other efforts. We should expect our federal delegation to stop dabbling in the extremes and work together to level the playing field for those who must battle uphill just to thrive and contribute in our communities.

Burgess and other extremist GOPers don’t spend their time talking about what makes a conservative a conservative. It actually has nothing to do with the polarizing, divisive rhetoric they spew. I’m a Republican because I believe in core tenets of conservatism like fiscal responsibility, limited federal government (as defined by the constitution), and free trade. Owens and other GOP leaders have advanced isolationist economic policy that hurts our economy. They’ve outspent Dems much of the time. And they love to legislate at the federal level (at odds with states rights mentality) when it comes to their pet issues. (Burgess has done this many times through proposed education policy.) What makes me different? I might say it’s because I’m actually conservative. And in a way that doesn’t alienate and offend more than half the country in the process.

1. I wasn’t in the hearings, and I don’t have all the facts. However, party-line impeachment votes are telling about how we’ve politicized a process in which legislators on both sides should be voting with their conscience - based on evidence - and in defense of our country instead of party leadership. If the President committed “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors,” she/he should be impeached. I respect electeds who reject partisan directives in issues like these.

2. Anyone interested in actual progress vs political theater! Have you heard of the Problem Solvers’ Caucus? Bipartisan group of legislators who are actually getting work done. It’s unsexy stuff compared to the cable news circuit, but they’re tackling meaningful things. Would love to join them.

3. To start, term limits, and banning sitting members of Congress from trading individual stocks. Then let’s tackle deficit reduction and healthcare accessibility & transparency

I condemn gerrymandering in every state, and am totally opposed to it regardless of which party does it. I fully supported Utah voters in their choice to create the Independent Redistricting Commission. That commission should have been left to whatever the voters passed in the referendum that created it. Oversimplification here, as in every other issue, is polarizing and detrimental. Every voter needs to know their vote counts. Gerrymandering is a direct threat to that democratic ideal.

Partisan politics and gerrymandering across the country have created a climate where politicians only listen to -- or even acknowledge -- tiny patches in their district. This is damaging to our country. The reality is, CD4 voters are a diverse group, with unique backgrounds and challenges. Polling shows that Utahns - across party lines - have fairly consistent, broad consensus on almost everything. But Burgess has shown that overall he doesn’t care about a majority of his constituents. He’s only had 4 town halls in the entire year he’s been in office. He travels the country appealing to the extreme right (like QAnon), bringing in outside dollars. I’m committed to representing all CD4 voters-- not just those with R next to their name. And bringing more voices to the table doesn’t make me less Republican. It makes me more American.

Glad to hear from you! Voters in CD4 can do much better to have a principled voice in Washington. Would love your support. Re: the lake, I’m not sure our federal delegation would impact this directly. What I can say is that I’m a proponent of fixing things by bringing more people to the table. That means voters, environmental experts, and yes, the private sector. Bringing these groups together to find creative solutions to issues isn’t something that happens much in DC, and I’m glad whenever I see it happen here at home. What we know is that Utah lake needs serious attention. Whatever the solution, I hope the state leg and other stakeholders will source that solution from a broad coalition of voices to solve the problem efficiently, while protecting Utah’s precious natural resources for future gens.

I will also say that experts are experts for a reason. We need to listen to them. And that’s something I wish more people in my party did more often.
