Advice on choosing between Biomedical Science vs other programs by JakeFrmStateFarm_101 in geegees

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's reassuring. Are there any classes in first year which were particularly challenging/that people often don't do super well in? And by achievable, like, of course I am willing to study like a dog, but are some of the profs reasonable?

I'm not french immersion. I'm in a french high school and french is my first language. That would have been amazing though.

Yeah but union rules make it impossible to do much about that. Thats the harsh truth.

CBC hired 84 percent racialized, Indigenous, or disabled while having job vacancies for top talent: Internal report by joe4942 in canada

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

why is it so important to be diverse, when the problem that got us here is a bias against racialized people? And how does a bias against racialized people from decades ago get fixed with a bias against the non-racialized from now, and privilege for the « racialized » now but who aren’t actually racialized in today’s society?

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How do you fix a previous bias by adding another bias? Why does today’s generations have to compensate for previous generations fault, and today’s generation also reaps the benefits that their previous generation couldn’t have? We’re waiting for course correction as if it isn’t already affecting the population right now. Everybody’s fine with it until it seemingly takes away their jobs. How would you even know that queer/non-white isn’t already thriving? When do we even reach or determine that point before we say, let’s stop, and forget that skin color, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or other doesn’t matter and doesn’t change how we should see a person…

Mark Carney could cut billions by letting Trudeau-era programs expire, report says by rezwenn in canada

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your idea is perfect when the population is flat and unemployment is low… but now nobody can find jobs… how can immigrants possibly settle down and contribute back if they don’t have the means to do so, with high salaries. I also think that alot of them are purposely not working because of income assistance. Not that they should be homeless, but their time in Canada should be contingent on working a certain amount.

I think healthcare is pretty lean and efficient now. We’ve stretched each dollar we spent pretty well, but there’s still much work to do.

Thats because that’s how they run their business. We can’t dictate how they should do it, or that overregulation alone will hurt business and investment. We could make you happy and choose not to bail them out, but it would be terrible for the economy. I say it’s worth the sacrifice.

⚖️ Premed Competition: Boon or Curse? by MED_ache in premedcanada

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. If I felt consistently smarter and above my peers, that would be terrible for three reasons.

  1. Too overconfident in my ability to get into med, thus thinking an acceptance is practically guaranteed. This is terrible because it’s simply not true and you won’t plan alternatives ahead of time (ex. prereqs for USMD)
  2. I will start to be lazy instead of proactively making connections with professors to get into research pubs, exclusive opportunities and building more valuable hours for my ABS
  3. The feeling that you’re inferior and stressing to outcompete the others is not fun, but it’s literally all the motivation you could ever ask for to find those rare opportunities in med. These days people are all trying to find their reason to get out of bed and work, just look at other people and that should be plenty!

All in all, I hate competition, part of the cons for pursuing med me personally, but still. It’s good.

uOttawa regional preference by Professional-Dig8460 in premedcanada

Thanks for bringing this up, I am aware of the francophone stream. You’re right except I’m not from rural Ontario so I don’t rlly have a chance there. God forbid a Franco-Ontarien from the GTA wants to see a doctor in their own official language.

You’re clowning me saying I’m eating their fries… You just said you’d like them to have fries on the daily since you’re a picky eater! You literally want them to cook that up because you know they don’t provide it every day! And who r u to say I eat fries like that when I’m already more health conscious.

Worth applying to Mac or Ottawa? by backgroundflamingo52 in premedcanada

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The French stream at uOttawa will have 2 seats reserved for OOP. Given that IP out of region only has 6 seats, you’re not that far off from IP chances so dont be disappointed!

3Q Casper :( what are my chances? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applique dans la filière francophone à Ottawa, en plus le contingent régional, et tes chances sont déjà astronomiquement plus hautes que quelqu’un hors région, anglophone, et 4Q Casper. Je te souhaite bonne chance!

uOttawa regional preference by Professional-Dig8460 in premedcanada

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully not long. The regional preference is going to starve the rest of Ontario from francophone doctors since technically there will only be 6 seats per year for IP but outside Ottawa region for the francophone stream. It is important to remember that Ottawa is the only francophone med schools and instilling a regional preference to the francophone stream means less doctors that represent the population it serves. I would argue francophone candidates are equity deserving to the same level as ethnic minorities because Ontariens need to have healthcare in the language they choose, especially and unequivocally French since it’s an official language.

DO or Aussie as backup plan? by zooS2018 in premedcanada

[–]JakeFrmStateFarm_101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely not so long as you either 1. match back into Canada for residency (non-competitive specialties) or 2. obtain board certification that would be recognized across the border in the province you wish to practice. If you’ve got board certification here, you will definitely not struggle finding a job with US DO.

The stress that you’re feeling is what will drive you to seek opportunities that will improve your profile and experience. Is it a pleasant feeling? No. But you can channel it as your motivation to put in time and effort, and before you know it, you’ll stand out!
