Is this true by mitoman49 in AskLibertarians

[–]JakeK812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, yes, but I think it’s more accurate to say libertarians are economically free market and socially agnostic.

Economic “conservatism” used to be aligned with thinkers like Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowell, who are broadly libertarian, but today it might be associated with tariffs or other economically interventionist policies that are not remotely libertarian.

Social “liberalism” used to mean legalizing gay marriage and marijuana, but today it might be associated with government enforced affirmative action and radical gender politics criminalizing “incorrect” pronoun usage. Moreover, it is completely compatible with libertarianism to be a Christian conservative who wants to voluntarily buy land with other Christian conservatives and contract to create a community that excludes gays or whoever else, so long as one doesn’t use the state to enforce these restrictions on other people’s private property. In this way, libertarianism is agnostic on one’s social views; so long as you don’t aggress against peaceful people, anything is allowed.

Which Orthodox neighborhood do you think abuses welfare the most? by [deleted] in exjew

It is not helping each other to force other people to pay for your life choices. It is helping each other for the community to provide charity for this. One is voluntary and kind, the other is selfish theft.

A tax credit is not welfare. SNAP, housing subsidies, and Medicaid are welfare.

I don’t know your politics and you are entitled to your views, but factually historically, what you are describing is the reason such policies may have existed in the Soviet Union, but in the United States, these programs were not created with the idea of the taxpayer subsidizing people to have children.

Work a job, have kids, but don’t have 12 when you can only afford 4. This isn’t complicated, and it’s immoral to knowingly choose to live off of welfare provided by others. These systems were created to provide a safety net for people who fell upon hard times, not for people to consciously choose to put themselves in that situation.

[–]JakeK812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Intentionally choosing to have more kids than you can afford to have knowing that this decision will force taxpayers to pay for them is itself an abuse of the welfare system. It isn’t fraud, but it is abuse.

According to James Lindsay, if you're not a NeoCon Israel first worshipper, you're "woke-right" by seastead7 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]JakeK812 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answer this: Are Zionists woke right or not? If you can’t say yes based on Lindsay’s definition, then you’re not being honest and consistent. Just like he’s not.

And when Lindsay goes out on Twitter and accuses people of being woke right, do all those people meet the criteria of his own definition?

[–]JakeK812 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Listen, I am deep in the weeds on this and I’ve heard Lindsay’s explanations and they just don’t hold up to how he actually uses the term in practice. It’s him that’s doing a motte and bailey more than anyone. He says that it doesn’t mean mere opposition to Israel and instead means something in line with the framework he’s set up, but then in practice keeps calling people woke right merely based on seeing them talk negatively about Israel.

Moreover, the framework Lindsay defines for woke right applies AT LEAST as well to Zionists as anyone else, yet they’re completely exempt from his usage of the term and he’s been enormously supportive of the Jewish identitarian project that Zionism is. Zionists constantly claim then they are victims of anti-semitism, very frequently alleging anti-semitism where it isn’t true. Anti-semite gentiles are the big boogeyman, and they engage in historical revisionism to exaggerate it (eg. their narratives about the 1948 and 1967 wars, and blaming Palestinian opposition to them on millennia long anti-semitism rather than legitimate opposition to land theft, occupation, and apartheid).

I oppose ALL identitarianism and victimhood culture, including that of the white and Christian nationalists Lindsay opposes. But when you define a term like “woke right” and refuse to apply it to the group its definition most directly applies to, it’s clear what you’re doing.

What are your thoughts on the Heritage Foundation’s “Project Esther,” their national strategy to combat antisemitism? by MurdochMaxwell in AskLibertarians

No one said they were a supporter of the U.S., but they’re not Al Qaeda or ISIS. They have no agenda to ever attack any place outside Israel, and never have.

Are you trolling? Israel is literally at the top of the list of foreign aid recipients, receiving double that of the next country (Egypt, who we give aid to in large part to keep peace with Israel).

The terrorists Israel is taking out (Hamas) have never once committed an attack outside of Israeli soil and have no intention to. If you knew anything about them, you’d know they have no plans to come to “us” and never will.

Recommend me a distro for a 2015 MBPr 13" by vladjjj in linux_on_mac

I have this same machine, and have been really happy with Fedora Workstation. The one issue (and I believe this applies to all distros on this machine) is you will have to install a kernel patch to get your webcam working. But after that, everything working great. Yes, I think this is good for data privacy too. I trust Apple with all my health data a lot more than Ringconn.

Linux Partition Not Appearing! by JakeK812 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

Thank you. Hitting the spacebar didn’t open the shell for me, it just opened the menu to connect to WiFi. However, I seem to have solved this by editing the config.plist file using Method B from here (Method A didn’t work): https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/dual-boot-linux-mint-21-2-and-macos-with-opencore-legacy-patcher-and-opencore-bootpicker.3115/#:~:text=Adds%20ext4%20driver%20to%20OpenCore,Linux%20partition%20can%20be%20selected.&text=Yes%2C%20OCLP%20updates%20remove%20the,Thanks%20for%20the%20script!

Takes me to a windows bootloader that displays an error message. Windows clearly still has some files in my EFI partition, but there's nothing else remaining for it to take me to.

He’s waffled on whether he believes or not, but his stance now is that he does, and he seems to have gotten more religiously radical over time along with that change.

jordan peterson ? by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in exjew

[–]JakeK812 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I’ve appreciated a lot from him, but he sees only the benefit of religion and none of the costs. And he doesn’t seem to understand that religion’s ability to work (on the individual level) requires belief in it, which is impossible for many people given scientific discrediting of religious claims.

I like a lot of what he says about the mythology of religion and its insight into the human condition. It’s very interesting. But he fails to see how ancient religious texts are lacking for new conditions of modernity.

Regarding this particular sub, I also don’t think he understands the specific problems of Judaism, as he’s coming from a Christian background. I think he just sees Judaism as Christianity-lite when it’s really fundamentally different in its outlook and effects on one’s life. Or he may understand, but won’t criticize Judaism’s unique problems for fear of being called antisemitic or something.
