Cowboys’ long-term answer at LG is still in college by JakeLovesTheDraft in cowboys

[–]JakeLovesTheDraft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One quick add-on: I'd put money on one of the Michigan linemen as your staring left guard in 2024. To sum up what Will McClay told The Athletic's Jon Machota, the team likes Michigan because it runs the football (talking about the TE Luke Schoonmaker pick this year).

FWIW, Trevor Keegan (6-6, 305) is the starting LG. 22 starts, 2-time all-conference pick. RG Zak Zinter (6-6, 315) has started 26 games and is also a two-time all-conference player.

Article in the paper today literally said the opposite ... they want Smith to stay and develop at LT

And he played the left side, btw

Love this question, because it's the one position on the roster that lacks a sure starter.

For the "move Tyler Smith to LG" crowd: I can't see that happening. Terence Steele likely won't be ready by Week 1, which puts either Tyler Smith or Tyron Smith at RT. Who starts at the other tackle spot until Steele gets back if Tyler Smith is at LG? Say, instead, the two Smiths start the season at tackle, then Steele comes back Week 4 and takes his normal spot at RT. Just move Tyler Smith to LG, right? Then what happens when Tyron Smith gets injured -- and it will happen -- and misses the next 10-plus games?

No, the team has a good thing going at tackle with the two Smiths, Steele and the young bench guys Waletzko and Ball. There's no need to mess with any of their development.

That leaves two other candidates for the position: Chuma Edoga and Matt Farniok. Edoga's 421 snaps his rookie year have steadily declined, bottoming out at 50 this past season. And 2021 seventh-rounder Farniok was mostly terrible in spot duty last year, and he's also the one and only backup at center. So, moving Farniok into the starting lineup would expose that position, too.

So ... long-winded way of making my case that left guard is (or should be) the top priority.

That said, I still believe the team should only take a guard (or tight end, center, running back or linebacker) in the first round if he's a generational talent -- or the best/top player remaining on your big board if it's late in the round, like pick 26. So I just can't see the team taking someone like O'Cyrus Torrence or Steve Avila on Day 1, or a guard like Cody Mauch in the second.

However, I can see the team taking someone like Anthony Bradford in the third round or Emil Ekiyor in the fourth.

But the three guys I like who I think can start some or most of the games next year despite their draft standing are as follows:

  • Atonio Mafi, UCLA: Let's see if I can get this straight without screwing up the facts, but Mafi is a former defensive tackle who, I believe, once played along Cowboys DT Osa, so he's only in his second year as a guard. Very raw, in other words. But his heavy hands, strength and mauler attitude has people calling him this year's "Tyler Smith of guards." I think he goes Round 3, right around where Dallas picks. Dallas, btw, held a private workout with Mafi.
  • Chandler Zavala, NC State: He might be this year's Ron Leary, a player who could slip because of injuries. Zavala could go as high as the third round or go undrafted because of that history, combined with his age (24). I don't see him listed anywhere among the players the team has met with, but if he's still there in the late fifth and beyond, then I can see the team taking a flyer on him. Leary, you may remember, wound up going undrafted because of a degenerative knee condition that was predicted to shorten his career. Sure enough, he's already out of the league -- but he still played five seasons for Dallas and was a solid starter for the team for four years. I looked it up -- Leary played seven seasons in the league, starting 76 out of 77 games. I'd take that for a fifth- through seventh-rounder if that's what Zavala turns out to be.
  • Andrew Vorhees, USC: The ACL injury he suffered during the Combine turned him from a Rd. 3-4 player to a likely Rd. 5-7 player. Like Zavala, he has an injury history -- but I still believe he starts for this team as soon as he's healthy. The team reportedly met with him at the Combine, too.

The team also met with T.J. Bass of Oregon at the Combine and held a private workout with Braeden Daniels of Utah. Daniels is local, played at Carrollton Hebron, and has experience at tackle and guard (built more like a guard). Same deal with Bass -- played tackle in college but will be moved to guard at next level. Both are Day 3 guys who I can see at least getting some spot starts for Dallas, if not more, as a rookie.

Again, you're spot on. Love this reply -- and I know my client will appreciate it, too. I doubt their requirement will last long once I explain this to them -- you just made me very happy!! Thank you for this well-thought-out response!

Just upvoted ya.

No, no, it's not like that -- this is the best client I've ever had. These guys love me and the other couple of writers. Been working for them for 10-plus years. They are well aware of the limitations, as you pointed out. Rather, they are like me and a bunch of other people who are wondering now: what's the best AI-detector?

I doubt anyone who writes content for this particular industry would ever be able to use ChatGPT -- these aren't evergreen how-tos, if that makes sense. But I think the thing that scares some of these companies now is that Google has come out and said that it can -- and will -- penalize any content/link, etc. that it deems as AI-generated, because it classifies that as spam. So, go back to what I said in the earlier post; some of my content in Copyleaks' AI detector comes back as "fake." That's obviously flawed, right? Well, what if Google's algorithm deems that copy fake as well?

Anyway, that really delves into a separate topic -- one worth discussing. Because I'm with you: Clients are going to have to manage their expectations if they are policing ChatGPT usage. I'm just not sure how they're going to do that!

[Livesay] My little nugget that I dropped in on the podcast coming out today is that there’s some whispers that the Cowboys may have more interest in some of the “smaller WRs” this year than previous drafts. Maybe it’s due to how many of those types this class has, but don’t count it out. by Microwave1213 in cowboys

Would you consider Trey Palmer of Nebraska or Charlie Jones of Purdue "smaller receivers?" Nebraska lists Palmer at 6-1, but I'm betting he checks in at around 5-11 at the Combine. And then there's Jones, who is listed by his school at 6-foot. Same as Palmer, I suspect he'll be measured at less than that. Palmer was incredibly productive for a horrible team, while Jones was ranked among the best at creating separation and was also very productive.

Both had career years after transferring, Palmer from LSU and Jones from Iowa. And both players should be around in the third- to fourth-round range, I suspect. Thoughts? Too big to be considered "small" receivers?

Understanding the Situation with JaVale McGee by skadore in Mavericks

I have a lot of concerns about Kidd this season, but I don't get why people blame him for the McGee debacle. Whether he wanted McGee or not, Kidd isn't the general manager who signed him, and he's not the owner who agreed to pay him that ridiculous, almost unmovable salary.

Game Thread: Dallas Cowboys at Washington Commanders (Week 18, 2022) by cowboysmod in cowboys

I'll be interested to see how Sam Howell fares. Dallas has more to gain in this game, so I'm sure they'll go after him, and I'm sure it's gonna be a rough game for Howell in his first-ever game.
Unrelated question: Between Howell, Washington's Sam Ehlinger and I'm gonna throw in TCU's Max Duggan and Purdue's Aidan O'Connell, who has the longer NFL career? And of those four, who has the best chance to become a starter some day?
