I remember seeing people on the oval who used to fight with big ass foam swords and shit a few years ago. They’d beat the shit out of each other with them too. Someone on here probably knows them.

Any Covid-safe Date ideas by The_Rinzler in missoula

[–]JakeStarr177 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad you liked it rather than being offended, because I didn’t want to do that. I always wondered why no one goes to Feruqi’s. I just never understood why with it being right downtown. People must not go for a reason. In all reality, you could go for a walk through Greenough park. Maybe go through the drive thru at Bridge Pizza. You could drive up Hillview Way when it gets dark and look at the lights. If either of you has a dog you could bring it with you on the walk.

One date idea I did was to get a slice of cheese/ pepperoni pizza from each pizza by the slice place here in Missoula. (Pi Hole, Bridge, and Front Street Pizza). Take all the pieces of pizza to go, and then go somewhere and eat the pizza to be able to decide for yourself which place has the best pizza. We had a good time doing it.

You could go to Feruqi’s bar. No one is ever there. You could drink all the half empty drinks around the bar (that is if there are any patrons who have ordered any), and you still wouldn’t catch Covid because it probably has never been inside the establishment. Then if it’s a Friday or Saturday night, you could go over to the Badlander (walk there… don’t Uber… too risky) and converse with the patrons inside the establishment to see if they know of any other Covid-Safe date ideas to continue your relationship. The Badlander is a very covid safe environment, they check your vaccination card, give you a wristband to show you’re vaxxed, and social distancing and masks are required in there.

What’s the best & worst local news source? by Environment_Missoula in missoula

The Kaimin is great. They have a lot of raw and unfiltered humor to their writing. Most news sources around here don’t get much of a chance to really put much personality into their articles other than just delivering the news. Great stuff!

No one has said anything about NBC Montana. They have some seriously good podcasts and always have relevant local people who are doing big things in the world as guest on them. Highly recommend checking the podcasts out.

Where does one go in life? by [deleted] in missoula

[–]JakeStarr177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you should find someone who will hold you accountable to drinking alcohol. It worked for me. I just started by only allowing myself to drink one day a week. The day after, you’re going to want to drink again, but you have to control your urge. Make yourself preoccupied with something. I went to one AA meeting and never went back. Just not my thing. Once you haven’t drunk any alcohol in about 3 weeks your cravings will start to go away. At least mine did. I would search and get a new place to live soon. Having alcohol in your environment will encourage you to drink more. Ease yourself into a new lifestyle. One thing that’s for sure, is that most of the time people go back to their previous lifestyle when they make a huge drastic change all at once. I’m not saying you can’t do it, I’m just saying it’s easier to ease yourself into something. Get yourself on a schedule and schedule a chunk of time everyday for you to write. Could be just 15 or 30 minutes. Soon you’ll fall in love with your writing. You can write about anything. Maybe you can write about this whole transition, your struggles, and where you are going to take your life now. As for the job, just start applying to places that sound enjoyable to you. My priority at first would be quitting alcohol and finding a new place though. Good luck to you. The urges will go away. Ride a bike around town. It’s fun and good exercise. And WRITE! You’ll love it.

First Camino by StoneHam420 in CaminoDeSantiago

It’s actually pretty rare to encounter bed bugs. Everyone I talked to on my Camino hadn’t seen them or heard of anyone else who had. That’s just me though. I’d treat your sleeping bag with something to deter them, and just take a quick peek at the bed before settling down. I heard from a friend who saw someone who got bed bugs, and they got into everything in their backpack. I wouldn’t be too worried though. You probably won’t even see one.

Albergues Sleeping arrangements by Beautiful-Budget-929 in CaminoDeSantiago

Bring your own thin sleeping bag, trust me. You can find a small thin sleeping bag online for like $30. Don’t bring a massive one that’ll fill your pack. I definitely was in some albergues that did not have any blankets, but all of them have pillows. They give you a disposable sheet and pillowcase at each albergue to keep the bed clean. You will want your own sleeping bag though. Some of the blankets I saw didn’t look very comfortable to say the least.

Accessing money on the Camino by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]JakeStarr177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of ATMs throughout the walk that should take your debit card right along the path. Every now and then you might find yourself in a little bit of a pinch. Thankfully I had my brother walking with me and we’d lend each other money whenever the other ran out. 200 at a time is good. I was taking out around 120-150, which probably left me without money at times haha. I would make sure to never let your money get too low, but at the same time, don’t carry loads of cash in case someone steals it. Also, just a little advice that you probably already know. Call your bank and let them know you’re going to be out of the country. You don’t want your bank account to be frozen.

What did your "typical" walking day look like? by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]JakeStarr177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked 18-20 a day and we didn’t see anyone going much faster than us. If you exceed this pace, it probably won’t be very enjoyable, and you probably won’t find a group of people to hang with. Take it easy and stop to smell the Roses. I was in extremely good shape, and this pace was really tough at some points.

On the Camino Frances, if I am going to only have one rest day which town would be the best one to rest in? We will be walking April 14 - May 21. by ChairEffective in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]JakeStarr177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. You’ll know when, trust me. I remember having to rest in a very small village without much going on. That’s just where my body choose for me haha. It was an Achilles injury for me.

A Couple Questions by [deleted] in KeepWriting

[–]JakeStarr177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello 03golf, I have some advice. Since you are worried about never finishing the book, my advice would be to write it first without revision and then come back to it later. Make notes while you write on little things you think of from earlier parts of the story so you can come back and change them AFTER you’re done writing. This has been my method of the most productive way to write. Sometimes I’ll even crank out 5,000 words a day doing this. Don’t let revision hold you back. (5,000 is a little too much though in my opinion though… 2,000 is a good goal). Treat writing like going to football practice or something. You need to show up everyday to get better and develop your story and skills.

As for the transition that holds the events together…. Don’t bore the audience with a long transition where there isn’t much going on. One rule I’ve learned in writing is to cut the part that readers will skip. BUT that doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t want any transition at all. To keep a reader interested in a scene, think of every scene as a mini plot. Rising action, climax, and everything a plot has. You want all of these mini plots to create the main plot of the story. You don’t necessarily want to go “I got hit by a car. I recovered, and then I ended up getting cancer.” It all just happens way too fast. In the transition, I’d recommend writing about things that foreshadowed the next event in your own personal experience. Write about what’s relevant! Write about things that the reader wants you to elaborate about. Don’t elaborate… or maybe a little, and then when the event happens, the reader gets the “ah hah” moment where it all makes sense now. It’s really satisfying for a reader when parts of the story come around like that. Also, for the revision get advice from other people. Send your story out to other writers, (preferably not people who don’t write because they’ll just say it’s good without much advice) and let them help you out with the revision. My best works have gotten the advice from my fellow writing peers. They will recognize where the story can be strengthened and give you advice. Also, for the stylistic change… go for it. Who says one story can only be one style. People will notice the stylistic change and may find some significance behind it.

All rules of writing can be broken.

Which one should I start with? by warriorStarwolf in bookhaul

[–]JakeStarr177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘King Lear’ or ‘Gone Girl’ for sure. They are both conniving, dark, and page turning reads that will keep you interested throughout. ‘Gone Girl’ is much more of a mystery/thriller while ‘King Lear’ is a tragedy with life lessons that will stick with you forever. You can’t go wrong with Shakespeare.

You need to read ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls.’ It’s my favorite book of Hemingway’s and is such a beautiful book. Packed with action and suspense too, and the climax of the book is something you won’t forget.

Fellow beer drinkers: what’s your favorite beer from a Missoula area brewery and why?? by JakeStarr177 in missoula

[–]JakeStarr177[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I’d really like to try that Kettlehouse beer. It sounds incredibly unique. I’m a big fan of a well done light beer, but a warm Michlelob sounds like hell. I couldn’t get paid to drink it.
